The music world mourns the loss of an R&B legend. Luther Vandross passed away Friday of complications from a stroke he suffered 2 years ago. The singer was pronounced dead at 1:47 PM at the JFK Medical Center in Edison New Jersey. Details on the exact cause of death have yet to be released. He was 54.

Luther Vandross had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team,” read a statement released by the hospital. “As you know, Luther Vandross suffered a stroke two years ago, which he never fully recovered from. Throughout his illness, Luther received excellent medical care and attention from his medical team. Luther was deeply touched by all the thoughts and wishes from his fans.

The loss of a Vandross has rippled throughout the music industry. Vandross has been considered an inspirational legend to many whose music has had a lasting impact on, not only yesterday’s, but today’s generation of music lovers.

The singer has struggled his whole career with weight problems, hypertension and diabetes, which led to a stroke that put him in a coma for nearly two months back in April of 2003. He recovered and began singing again in October of the same year.
