Queen Latifah, Remy Ma and Rah Digga are just few of the iconic MCs set to be featured in the upcoming Netflix docuseries, Ladies First: A Story Of Women In Hip Hop.
The four-episode production is scheduled to hit the streaming platform on August 9, 2023. It will explore the history and current landscape of women in Hip Hop, enriched by perspectives from veterans as well as modern-day titans.

As per a press statement, “This timely limited doc series recontextualizes the irrepressible women of hip hop and their role in the genre’s 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day. Each of the four installments features a parade of iconic emcees like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Rah Digga, up and comers, and artists currently at the top of the charts like Latto, and Tierra Whack alongside key figures from record labels, stylists, and journalists.

“By giving flowers to originators like Sha-Rock and Roxanne Shante or hearing real talk from contemporary superstars like Saweetie and Coi Leray, Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop contextualizes the history of the music that changed the world within the wider social, racial, and political landscape of the times and, crucially, through a female lens.”
Though Hip Hop has had its share of struggles in bagging top commercial spots this year, many artists are optimistic about the current state of its culture. Lil Baby, among others, believes that female rappers are currently running the game, and shouted out Nicki Minaj in particular as the G.O.A.T.
The Atlanta rapper made the comments alongside Rylo Rodriguez during a recent episode of Complex’s G.O.A.T. Talk in mid-June, and when asked to name his greatest of all time female rapper, he didn’t hesitate to bring up Nicki Minaj.
“Nicki Minaj for sure,” Baby replied, to which Rylo said: “I agree with that.”

“There’s like crazy, crazy female artists right now,” Baby continued. “Females are running the game right now.”
Fabolous, on the other hand, recently expressed that he felt female rap is too one-dimensional and that he wants to hear more “perspectives” from the ladies of Hip Hop. While acknowledging that he’s happy to see so many women doing their thing, the Brooklyn spitter added that he’d love it if some of these “strong” women chose to rap about their life experiences a little more.

“I love hearing female rappers talking some real shit,” Fab wrote in a recent Instagram Story. “Women are so strong. Have so many stories and perspectives that we need to hear in pure form.”
He continued: “No disrespect to any female rappers out there but I think there’s only one style of female rap/Hip Hop being promoted, programmed and looked at as successful now.”
