Push It Real Good: Salt-N-Pepa Miniseries Heading To Lifetime

With the Surviving R. Kelly documentary in its rearview, Lifetime is looking forward to its next project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable network is currently working on a Salt-N-Pepa miniseries — the simply titled Salt-N-Pepa.

Produced by Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere for Flavor Unit, the series will detail the lives of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton, who became one of the first all-female rap groups and pushed the boundaries of what Hip Hop looked like at the time.

Both Salt and Pepa will serve as executive producers and have licensed their music for the documentary. The same writer who penned The New Edition Story, Abdul Williams, will write the script for Salt-N-Pepa.

Along with DJ Spinderella, Salt-N-Pepa released five studio albums, beginning with 1986’s Hot, Cool & Vicious and culminating with 1997’s Brand New. Throughout the years, they’ve continued touring and since 2016, Pepa has been a regular on WE tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta.

Last week, Salt-N-Pepa shared an Instagram photo of themselves working on new music. The caption read, “Salt-N-Pepa’s in the studio.”

A premiere date for the miniseries has yet to be announced. In the meantime, DX would like to wish Salt a very happy 54th birthday!

    1. Broke my heart when I found out Hurby wrote the rhymes too. But it is what it is. Salt n papa the 1st tight female hip hop entity. Sorry Sha Rock and Shante. I’ll check for it. I hope they included the time Pepa beat Mary j. Bilge ass.

      1. I just don’t understand why y’all are in such denial over ghostwriting. There’s a very SMALL percentage of rappers who never used them. It is what it is. Refer to this past DXBreakdown

    2. very cool. the show should also, in fairness, include a nod to the Original Spinderella, and at least get into her tenure in the band until the point that DeeDee/Spin2 came into the picture. No need to portray anybody as a villain, but to be honest on how these relationships evolved over the years.
