Producer Joe Mansfield To Publish “Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession” Book

Get On Down Records/Traffic Entertainment’s Joe Mansfield has announced that he’s at work on a book, Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession. The longtime producer for Edo G. and member of Vinyl Reanimators is honoring the Roland TR-909 drum machine and others with his summer 2013 book, which includes tech specs, advertisements and photos. The Boston, Massachusetts-based music veteran owns over 75 rare drum machines.

As a promotional item for the book, Get On Down is releasing a dual-flexi disc (both 7″, one orange, one clear) limited edition preview of the book, narrated by Schoolly D, who provides instruction and explanation to the TR-909 unit. The Record Store Day item will be made available on April 20, and features a 20-page preview of Mansfield’s book. Moreover, Schoolly is joined by DJ 7L (of 7L & Esoteric/CZARFACE) who provides cuts. With Mansfield’s 909, they remake instruments two of Schoolly’s hits, “P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?)” and “Gucci Time.” Schoolly also contributed an interview to the full-length release of Joe’s book.

    1. Be wary buying this book. The quality/ style of the photos is very poor. Lots of darkness and shadow – the worst one being the studio400 being about 40% black. I am rather surprised they went ahead with printing these books given how dark the photos are. A real shame. No mention on any review about how poor the photos are. I expected more from such an expensive book
