Philadelphia Artists Unite To “Stop The Violence”

While the struggling economy has had a negative influence on jobs, education, and the availability of domestic resources, the issue has also had a major effect on crime rates. The Philadelphia Inquirer recently reported that shootings and killings have spiked in the city due to a lack of money to keep police officers on the street. According to the paper, the homicide count in Philadelphia was at 171 last week, compared to 158 the same time last year.

In an effort to continue to bring awareness to the issue of violence in the city, the 3rd Annual Unity in the Community  block party will go down Saturday, July 31 on 20th and Snyder. The event will feature performances by Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Meek Mill, Gillie da Kid, Peedi Crack, and other local artists who will help send the “stop the violence” message. The block party will also include a presentation encouraging steps towards ending violence.

Community leaders and radio personalities will also be attending the event.

    1. i support this kinda news… people like to cry and comment the negative shit but when positive news of something great is up nobody says one word now if the story topic said beanie sigel was locked up you gonna have everybody and there mother voicing there opnion…

    2. I haven’t heard from beans in a minute but freeway still preaches pro violence in his lyrics “we unload those weapons so bring them surgeons with ya…I mass murder niggas”. The two sided message has no effect really.

      1. I was thinking the same shit… How you gonna bring out Philly rappers that glorify violence? Why not Black Thought, Or Reef?

at least some local cats that have substance in their music, not a bunch of publicity whores…

    3. I’m glad it’s these guys though and not some idiots who aren’t from Philly and what not.
How do people expect to change things around them when they ain’t willing to change themselves?

    4. Hilarious. Why don’t you guys start the campaign by ceasing to rap about gratuitous violence and selling drugs in your songs? Hypocrites…SMH. I’m from Philly, so I’m all for the campaign, but practice what you preach.

    5. philly niggaz are soft ass niggaz just like that nigga will in fresh prince they can’t rap they can’t dance they’re just lucky bastards i bet lil wayne! won’t accept the hardest nigga from philly even as his ass wiper…

lil wayne! is da greatest of all da time fuck haters

      1. thats why your hero wayne had bodyguards in jail and was kept in a special section to keep himself, PUSSY, no other muthafuckas had that shit Pac aint have no bodyguards in jail neither did DMX…

    6. i ain’t knocc’n it,and i understand and know shit needs to settle down, but lets be honest if equals is gangsta’s and moving that, it’s always gonna be problems, plus the rappers themselves in they songs is telling you they bout that. Only way you can truly begin to stop the violence is you have to move away from that yourself,if not shit is just mouth service and about a checc yell

    7. You know who can stop the violence? Eminem can

Eminem is the greatest rapper ever. I think that classic Recovery basically cemented him WAY ABOVE Biggie and Pac. Biggie only had two albums, one a masterpiece the other over rated as shit. Pac never had a classic, all his albums have been good but no classics. Eminem has FOUR classics. You can’t deny MMLP, SSLP, Eminem Show and Recovery are classics.

He has the perfect flow, he does things with words every other rapper only dream of doing and he an make a song about shitting and it’ll be a hit. Hell Ass Like That was one of the best club songs ever because Eminem’s perfect flow.

Another thing is that Eminem is willing to put his shit out there. If I were a rapper and I had issues with my family or relationship problems, I wouldn’t talk about it and if I did I would be vauge. If Em has a problem with someone he’d call them out including his bitch ass momma, no good daddy and slut of an ex-wife.

If there was a religion based on rappers, Eminem would be the Christianity AND Islam of the rap world. He is the only rapper that can sell millions without promotion. Face it, Eminem is THE BEST RAPPER EVER and all the facts point to it.

Flow, lyrics, storytelling, success, fan base, following, concepts, Em has it all.

I’ll even go one step futhur, Eminem is so good MOST people who get into rap get into it because of Eminem. Hell Eminem is the only rapper to scare suburban white parents because his lyrics are so powerful and influential.

      1. LOL. eminem’s poppy recovery a classic? i smell EMINEM #1 FAN!!!!! FAGGOT!!!

and theres a reason why eminem still has a extremely small black minority as a fanbase with his major fanbase as white. hes been in the game for how many years? and he still has yet to establish a black fanbase. probably cause hes too corny for them and they cant relate to wanting to kill their mothers and wives.

      2. keyword: scared “SUBURBAN white” parents

aint no one from the hood bangin his music. hes a good rapper and he established a solid following, but like the guy above me said, his black fanbase is par-none while some rappers fanbase are ALL black. pac was renowned because he inspired all people, from all walks of life, black, white, hood, suburban, criminals, businessmen, poor, rich.

im sorry but im black and i cant relate to eminem either, i mean hes a good rapper and all but i can see how he inspires angry (white) teenagers mad at the world as we seen from his songs. we’ve all been at that stage, but when you grow up his music doesn’t connect as much. i think we can be fair and say the majority of his fanbase are white, middle class, 15-23 year olds. now im not saying there’s anything wrong with that, because there isn’t, but that’s just how it is. that’s the just crowd he reaches and connects with. and that’s his limit, why he’ll never be truly influential.

put that fanbase along with all his flaming homosexual comments, and who’s really going to be heartfelt by his music? although recovery was full of emotion, 25-to-life was the only song that made me think and be like ‘damn’.

      3. I agree Em is the best, but u need to pump yer brakes a bit…. He is in my OPINION barely better than Jay Z, and wat do u classify the greatest. better yet how do u classify the greatest,… if its money Jay has him beat,.. and the fact Jay has him beat shows u how Out of this world great Jay is……. Em gets play in every city on jus about every station… he gets played on rock stations,.. he gets play in places black rappers wont cuz white folk run the world….. of course he turns most onto Rap,. do sum history n u will also learn the basketball stadiums were almost empty cuz blacks were kickin all the white guys ass’s on the court,… but when larry bird came and started fuckin EVERYONE up the white ppl came back and the feud between bird and magic saved the sport…………… bottom line if a white guy does anything better or equal to blacks everyone want to jump on his dick… and in my OPINION, they classifying em as the greatest for the wrong reasons…. gotta lot more to say on the topic but fuck it

      4. Get Em’s cock out of your mouth Stan for fuck’s sake. 2Pac’s “Me Against The World” is a fucking classic album.

    8. While a bad economy is a justifiable cause to resort to illegal money making, the violence is illogical. These brothas obviously didn’t learn the illegal business lessons taught in the god father saga.

    13. Seriously I can’t keep hearing about these same Philly cats and they never showcase real talented artist besides a few like The Roots, Freeway, and Peedi has been trying to step up. Everybody else is garbage that people mention. Sudan is the illest shit to hit Philly since Black Thought he is a beast and very versatile. We will be hearing alot from him the near future!

    15. does anybody see what these cats are doing to the minds of people in society.negative breeds negative period.most rappers are fake ass niggas proclaiming to be real anyway.stop the violence please you propetuate the shit in your music know you preaching to stop it.how fuckin idiotic does that sound.thats like telling someone to say no to drugs but your flooding the streets with the shit with one goal in mind to make money.doesnt make any sense whatsoever.who the fuck picks the artists to represent the message there trying to put out when it comes to these issues.these niggas are about a check but these motherfuckers dont see they could care less.freeway is a disgrace to the whole muslim movement and so is beanie segal.islam preaches that music creates separation from allah.i stopped supporting artist who speak a good word or comment but when it comes to there music they wont take responsibility or govern there own art.fuck this puppeteir, shadyass, material glorifing, money thristy rap industry 95% of these niggas dont give a shit about us until your supporting there music and even then they still shit on there fans cause they think there so big in the world they cant keep it all the way real cause it would effect there record sells.if your a fan of these fake ass niggas and there message then fuck you 2

      1. Very bad assumption. Suburban white boys? I agree suburban white boys would not last in some parts of philly (uptown, gtown, brickyard etc) but come on now with the “white boy” assumption. Just because people do not know how to spell on the computer doesnt mean i have to call them a “dumb black kid”. Rep Philly hard, and stay united.

    17. come on man really do you think those cats give a fuck about you likeing them.if that shit dont matter to a motherfucker then they really not being honest with themselves.i respect every mans opinion cause its just that, but how can you acknowledge its hypocritical but then say you dont give a fuck thou.thats fake and your mind is so condition to the shit that you dont realize how much of a effect it has on your own life.blind brother wake up for real.
