N.E.R.D is prepping the release of their latest project, Nothing. Pharrell Williams recently spoke to Billboard about the album, describing its sound and saying he hopes it becomes a timeless work of art, after adding that previous N.E.R.D. projects have not lived up to the timeless tag.
“We thought why not make a timeless album that’s kind of a time capsule, so 10 years from now people look at that album and go, ‘I remember that era. That’s when the ‘Nothing’ album came out.’ I just wanted to make some good music that would affect people in a good way.”
One song said to be on the album is “God Bless Us All,” a song that Williams said was about a friend in the business who is a superstar. The song is meant to offer “words of encouragement,” he added, because the star went through “a rough patch.” Later, he noted that the unnamed friend is “making good music and people are warming back up to him.” This has already prompted some to speculate that the track is for Kanye West, a friend of Williams who suffered tough times, particularly after his mother’s death. Allusions to West also come due to the G.O.O.D. Music reference, but the muse for the track has not been officially stated.
The album, which features Daft Punk, will be released November 2.
Let me preface this by saying “In Search Of..” is one of my favorite albums ever. That said, I’m so tired of Hip-Hop artists being on each other’s DICK!. Look, I realize Kanye is your boy, but send him a fuckin’ card, don’t dedicate a song to him. Rappers dedicating songs to each other while they’re still alive is faggery, pardon the homophobism. Hip-Hop is like the NBA now, everybody is getting paid so much that they’ve alllost their toughness and now they’d rather kiss and hug each other than compete with each other. I’m not sayin’ there’s anything wrong with them being boys, but you don’t gotta stroke each other off so much. Jesus christ, every time I turn around there’s some rapper on the verge of tears thanking someone for being ‘such an inspiration’. Rap is gettin’ gayer and gayer.

Your statement cant be more ignorant. First off, if there is no unity there will only be beef. We all saw what that leads to. We lost too many great people because of lack of unity. So if people want to dedicate songs to fellow artist let it be. Why do you care. Not all rap is gangsta and unless you forgot hip hop started off as colorfull party music and now history is starting to repeat. If you dont like it thats fine but to call it gay and say that the game has gone soft is stupid. This is the direction it should go. It should be all love, no beef and just good music. If you are hating on that then you are not a true fan.
@Sensaye252
You say you want rappers to compete. Well only few can compete wit ha very level head in this rap game and you should know that. The other rappers that do compete with each other usually wind up dissing each other and then it slowly etches it’s way into drastic differences and then massive hatred and last but not least possibly beef which was the result of Biggie and Tupac. So competition hasn’t always been a good thing in Hip-Hop. You must have some sort of love for controversy within Hip-Hop and rappers literally disliking each other because that is what you have grown to be accustomed to in this generation. That’s what today’s competition in Hip-Hop has taught you to love and like and that’s rappers going against each other and not linking each other. Over at least 8 years since Jay and NAS’ beef that’s what the Hip-Hop industry has taught you to love and that’s rappers going against each other and disliking one another which is absolutely wrong. Like I said competition in Hip-Hop can usually grow into hatred and difference with not literally liking the rapper and not wanting to get along with the rapper. It could escalate in to something dangerous if the two rappers aren’t level headed about the situation. So now there’s alot of coming together because beefing has been destructive to Hip-Hop in the past few years and has hindered relationships as well that may not be able to be fixed. If you think this is gay then watch UFC if you like people to go against each other and you wanna see bad blood within people. If you have a joy for differences and you love being entertained by it then go find hatred in your nearest hoods somewhere to satisfy your sickening dysfunctional brain.
@Chag Hugo’s stunt double.
First off, I didn’t grow up in the era of rappers dissin’ each other. I grew up in The Kane, Rakim, NWA era. I’m almost thirty my man. I don’t have a bloodlust for beef either, I live in the city and always have, and I’m the first one talkin’ peace when shit goes down. I’m not saying I want rappers to beef, I’m saying I want rappers to stop stroking each other and have healthy competition. I remember Cube said one time, ironically, that ‘white america’ doesn’t make making rappers rich because they know the money will make them shut the fuck up about real things and just be content with their blondes and their boats and their Versace suits. Look man, I’m a positive dude, and I realize that Hip-Hop’s roots came from partying and having a good time, but even in those days, and I was there, there was competition amongst the artists that was driving the music. In the 80’s and early 90’s there were classic albums coming out left and right because everyone wanted to outdo each other. They had respect and love for each other, but it was on some Magic Vs. Bird shit, it wasn’t this Lebron joining forces with Dwanye Wade because it makes life easier bullshit. Pardon the overuse of the basketball analogy, but you get the point. These guys do nothing but jerk each other off and then drop mediocre albums that sound like a compilation of singles because they’re trying to cater to every possible listener, when to me, I wish they would just do Hip-Hop music. I don’t care if it’s fun, gangster, progressive, introspective, just make Hip-Hop music for us. Everybody makes pop music. Hip-Hop was special because it spoke for us. It WASN’T safe, it was edgy, it was a risk. But it was worth the risk because it was a movement. So excuse me if I’m not rejoicing and popping champagne with these poodle carrying metrosexuals. I see that shit everyday downtown on my way to work. I wanna hear something with some actual feeling. See some ferocity. Remember when you used to listen to an NWA record, and it was exciting,’cause you didn’t know what you were gonna hear? They might diss the president, they might diss another rapper, they make do a positive joint like ‘express yourself, but whatever it was you knew it would be cutting edge. These fuckin’ dudes, as talented as they are, are all pussies, and I’m just not as impressed with this ego-strokathon the way you are. There’s nothing impressive to me about these egomaniacs strutting around in Louis Vuitton wardrobes telling each other how dope they are. Look, It’s great that you’re all buddies, but save the dick-rubbing for the Armani fashion show in Milan or wherever you feminine ass niggas hang out, and give us some records with some meaning, not another record about how so-n-so is such a great guy. He’s already a fuckin’ egomaniac, the last thing he needs is another egomaniac to remind him of his brilliance.
word up! wasnt hip hop all about who could control the mic the best? who could drop the illest multisyllable rhymes and still stay on beat. Hip hop was about skill. You had to have good timing. Alright maybe those days are over, i agree “battling” is old school, but cant we have friendly competition some other way. Kanye obviously, with statements that said something such as he hates not being able to ever see himself live, has ego issues. I respect pharrel because of his inspirational music that he drops, but come on. I know kanye is your homie, but we all lose important people. Ive lost 5 close people in my life in the last 2 years. One was from cancer, close homie back in 10th grade. We all find ways to deal with this. My way is through music, but now its sad because hip hop used to have so much meaning to it. It seems like nowadays rappers have lost their strive to make a difference. I understand alot of these people did hustle to make it to the top, and they did have a rough childhood, but why cant you rap about that instead if you dont want to be competitive. Help someone do the same you did by motivating. If you honestly want to hear a song that someone with alot of money wrote to another person with alot of money stroking his ego. Then damn im sorry for u….
and to add to my last comment. I know losing your mother is probably the worst thing that could happen to anyone. My life would be over if that ever happened. Specially the only person who was there for you when probably no one else believed in you. I understand that. Thats when i feel kanye was weak emotionally and let his ego take full force. He could of taken a leave of abscence though and pharrel could of hit him up on the phone. A song is just too much
I swear man you hit it right on the fucking head, and what pisses me off is that deep down we as Hip Hop Heads think these same thoughts you’ve expressed. People need to stand up for something rather than just playing the so-called “Non-Hater” and accepting the mediocre bullshit that’s being forced down our throats. I’m even more impressed to hear that there are dudes like us that still care for this artform, oops I meant LIFESTYLE called Hip Hop. At 1st I was like who cares about these cats dedicating joints to each other, but after reading your perspective I definitely agree with you. The bullshit we’re forced to listen to is only alive today because a lot of so called Hip Hop Heads have allowed this bullshit saturate every aspect of the Hip Hop culture as we grew up to love it……Right on man, I’m feeling you (no homo)Long Live that REAL Hip Hop!!!!

Sensaye252 I feel you. At one point paying dues was your way of showing respect to those who influenced you, not to your homeboy who you see all the damn time. These ‘love fest’ moments reek of industry tactics to cross promote. Would these same artists have the nerve to dedicate a song to those artists who influenced them (like Nas did)?Dedicate a song to Public Enemy, X-Clan, Brand Nubian, PRT, Last Poets,etc..? Hip Pop is an exclusive fraternity (sorority), and situations like this are a byproduct. An industry frat boy zesty love fest (Kanye/Jay – Big Brother) where posse cuts and collabs result in tales of materialism and misogyny… Disgusting
wow.
Thank you. It’s relief to see someone else is grossed out by this stroke-fest. You’re right, Hip-Hop has become this snobbish fraternity of scarf wearing pretentious psuedo intellectual borderline geeks. Yes, they’re talented as artists, but they’re wack as people.
he’s talking about chris brown, not kanye west, when you hear the song, you’ll see excatly what i’m talking about….
“In search of” I still listen to this day, as well as “Seeing Sounds”. cant wait for the album!!!
