Pete Rock and Q-Tip Production Confirmed On Jay-Z & Kanye West’s “Watch The Throne”

Legendary Mt. Vernon, New York producer/deejay/emcee Pete Rock has long been credited as an influence to Kanye West. The man who produced Hip Hop classics such as “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” for his partner CL Smooth has reportedly contributed work to Kanye West’s upcoming Dark Twisted Fantasy, along with fellow ’80s and ’90s New York Hip Hop production luminaries DJ Premier and Q-Tip.

West has now claimed that Pete Rock, who’s supplied hits to artists such as Ghostface Killah, Freddie Foxxx, Nas and Rahzel is a producer on Watch The Thrown, the collaborative EP between Kanye and mentor Jay-Z. While Pete Rock has yet to speak on the matter, West also said that Oxnard, California producer Madlib may also be a producer on the EP.

We got new Pete Rock Joints on the Watch the Thrown album… Q Tip joints… We bout to spit on this Madlib beatless than a minute ago via web

In the same tweet, West confirmed that Q-Tip would also be involved.

Known for his many incarnations such as Yesterday’s New Quintet, Quasimoto and the Beat Konducta, the Stones Throw Records artist and Lootpack member has previously worked with Erykah Badu, MF DOOM, Talib Kweli and De La Soul.

Neither Madlib or Pete Rock has previously produced for Jay-Z. Q-Tip provided vocals to Jay-Z’s 2001 track “Girls, Girls, Girls,” though the song was produced by Just Blaze.

    1. This news just game me a boner

Jay-z kind of rapped on a madlib beat. “The Prelude” from Kingdom Come was produced by someone else but it sounds nearly identical to a quasimoto beat, “Axe Puzzles” I think

    2. jay on a madlib beat. damn that i would pay fo without even knowing wat anything else was or sounded like. imagine gettin DOOM on the track with him arhghghggh blew my load

    3. I hope this shit is true and that it officially goes down. I hope nothing changes and hope that Jay-Z doesn’t change his mind on this shit. Pete Rock has been dying to work with Hov since God knows when and Hov has been bullshitin’ for so many fuckin’ years. It’ll be very hard and too convincing for me to believe that Pete Rock,Q-Tip,and Madlib will all have beats for Jay to spit some hot classic quotable verses on. Kanye is just super hype because his album is about to drop soon and he has been constantly running his mouth back and forth about shit so I’ll believe it when I see it. This shit is way overdue and Jay should know better. He should’ve been on a Pete Rock and Q-tip a long ass time ago. NAS has already been there and done that so I could careless if it happens because more than likely it probably won’t because Jay stays on Timb’s,Pharell’s,and Swizz’s nuts every project… Jay-Z should’ve been on a J-Dilla beat way before his death so who cares what Hov does quite honestly… Pete gave Hov a beat and he turned it down and Pete wound giving it to Kurrupt for “Yes Sir” so go figure…

      1. Isn’t that sad? It’s like Jay has no passion for the art because he wants to always work with the Motown producers of hip-hop. If not for Kanye he probably would’ve never worked with Pete Rock, Q-Tip and Madlib. Yes he should’ve been on a Dilla beat.

    4. Jay-z is not Worthy of a Jay Dee(J.Dilla) Beat or Pete Rock Nas Needs Those beats so he and Elzhi can make a joint album

      1. LJ shut yo fuckin groupie ass up coz he clearly isn’t n hasn’t been able to spit with the top level mcs in a long fuckin time Elzhi would smash him to pieces on a track now with ease

    5. i admire kanye’s decisions to have some of the industry’s best (but unpopular) producers on his ep/album. this will be a bridge for younger people to enjoy some hiphop from original producers.

    6. Pete Rock, Q-Tip, RZA, DJ Premier, Madlib and Kanye West & No I.D. working on the same album is something unbelievable…I hope this is 4 real…

    7. It’s cool that a couple of mainstream emcees are workin’ with legendary ’90s producers, but I get really stoked when whole projects have one emcee/beatsmith. Lewis Parker/John Robinson and Ill Bill/Muggs’ LPs have been my favourite albums this year, and I’m sure KRS’ new ish is dope too. Jigga definitely needs to be heard spittin’ on some raw, ill hip-hop beats, though, so I won’t mind if the EP has a disparate production line-up, if it’s of the calibre of the names mentioned.

    8. Hip hops making a come back between artists like j cole wale lupe pusha t is on his way back up kanye jay is bringin it back right now jay electronica is nice even if his buzz is near dead budden ortiz royce (slaughterhouse) there is a lot more rappers that actually are about hip hop now as opposed to 08 and all the way back to 02 2011 is going to be the real return of real hip hop the game is a lot more open lyrically now than its been in almost a decade a lot of shit to look forward to

    9. if they could recognize that if they released a colab full EP with madlib, pete, q-tip, and take some dilla beats from his intrumental albums, it would be a completely raw sound and would return hip hop to what it is suppose to be.

      1. Jay-z is not Worthy of a Jay Dee(J.Dilla) Beat or Pete Rock Nas Needs Those beats so he and Elzhi can make a joint album.

      2. Jay is nowhere close to worthy of touching dillas beats they should be reserved for actual ill mcs Elzhi n Black Thought with first refusal on em

      3. I agree, Dilla beats should be reserved for such lyrical heavyweight legends as Frank-N-Dank, Madlib, & Illa-J… Yeah Jay-Z sux compared to those guys!!!!

[Fuck outta here – stupid-ass niggas]

    10. Being that Madlib is my 2nd favorite producer of all-time (#1: RZA, who’s also on this Dark Twisted Fantasy project), I can’t wait to hear some of the tracks he’s got for this EP and the album. Jay + Madlib doesn’t sound right haha but it could work

    11. I always loved Kanye’s ability to bridge different genres within HipHop.

This is Kanye at his best. Who else can get Jay on a track with Talib Kweli and Mos Def?
