While Fredro Starr is getting the itch to start producing again, the Onyx co-founder revealed he’s still getting royalties for crafting the group’s 1995 classic “Last Dayz.”
The track received a second life thanks to being used in a rap battle for 2002’s 8 Mile, but it wasn’t until the Eminem-starring blockbuster’s premiere that Fredro Starr found out the thumping beat was in the movie.
Starr detailed the epic night in a recent interview with Shirley Ju for VladTV where he pulled up to the premiere without an invite and it wasn’t until he ran into Dr. Dre that the legendary West Coast producer hooked him up with front row tickets.
“I didn’t even know the beat was in the movie. Nobody told me and there was no clearance… Eminem is battling [Lotto] and then the beat comes on, I caught the ill chills. I was like, ‘Oh shit, this beat is in the movie?!’
“Just to see Eminem rhyming on that beat was inspirational. I was like, ‘This n-gga is rhyming on my beat that I cooked up on the SP-1200.’ It’s in the 8 Mile movie and royalties are still popping.”
“Last Dayz” served as the second single on Onyx’s 1995 All We Got Iz Us album and peaked at No. 89 on the Billboard Hot 100.
