Nicki Minaj has revealed that her collaboration with Drake on Pink Friday 2 was originally supposed to appear on For All the Dogs.

The Young Money rapper released the long-awaited sequel to her 2010 debut album last week, and it included the song “Needle” featuring Drizzy.

During a guest appearance on Kai Cenat’s Twitch stream on Wednesday night (December 13), Nicki Minaj explained how the song was locked in for Drake’s latest album until the last minute.

“‘Needle’ with Drake is — so I didn’t tell anybody this, Kai — originally it was for Drake’s album,” she said.

“And right when I got it the first time, I was like, ‘I hope something happens and it ends up being on my album,’ ’cause I like it. Then at the end, Drake, when he was about to turn in For All the Dogs, he sent me two songs.”

She continued: “Anyway, to make a long story short, that same day he also told me, ‘Hey, I’m not using it for the album ’cause it doesn’t fit the sonic vibe. Do you want it?’ And I was like, ‘Fuck yes!’

“Not only is it a hit, it also reminds me of all of my Dricky [Drake and Nicki] nostalgia. The song is so Drake, only Drake can do it. And it reminds me of when we collab’d on ‘Moment 4 Life,’ which was on Pink Friday 1. So shout out to him.”

Drake initially announced he’d be collaborating with Nicki Minaj in July during the Detroit stop on his It’s All a Blur Tour.

“I’m gonna give away one thing for you tonight, because I got a lot of love for Detroit,” he said on stage. “So I’m gonna have to tell you that me and Nicki Minaj did our first song together in, like, a really long time. I got a lot of love for her.”

During a TikTok livestream in August, Nicki said the collaboration gave her nostalgia for their early Young Money days.

“The song I did with Drake recently definitely put me in the feels, like when we used to be doing Nicki Minaj TV on the Lil Wayne tour and stuff,” she reminisced. “Fun times, right?”

Nicki Minaj later said that fans would “love” the song and that she was waiting for Drake to send his contribution to Pink Friday 2.

“I know the world’s going to love the song, and that’s all I will say about that,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “But, no, Zane, Barbz, make sure y’all let Drizzy Drake know that Pink Friday 2 is coming out November 17 as well. And we are waiting on his contribution.”
