Nelly Causes a Protest

After being honored by the Governor and the Missouri General Assembly, Nelly is still unable to impress everyone in St. Louis. On April 29th Nelly and the St. Lunatics were in town to help shoot Murphy Lee’s new video at Busch Stadium, when Nelly decided to put hometown jerseys on people in the video. When Nelly tried to gain entrance into the Union Station shopping center to purchase twenty-five Cardinal Jersey’s for the video shoot, guards at the door asked him to either take his doo rag off or leave. In Union Station it is against code to wear bandanna’s doo rags, one pants leg rolled up or any kind of hip hop headgear because they feel it shows possible gang affiliation.

The incident caused one hundred and fifty people to march in protest of what they say was a racist incident. Protesters said they believe the rules in Union Station are made to keep black’s out of the downtown area. At the rally, protester’s said they feel Nelly should be backing them. “We shouldn’t buy one more Nelly cd until he stands up with us”; Rev. Horace Sheffield III told protesters. “He doesn’t feel it was a racist thing. Why are they boycotting him? Because he doesn’t agree with them? He isn’t a confrontational guy, but if he did think it was racist, he would be the first to say so. He was the one there”, his publicist Jane Higgins said in a statement about the incident.
