With the release of his latest mixtape, Great Tape 2, marking his first official outing as an Epic Records artist last month, Namebrand stopped by HipHopDX around the time of release and spoke about his signing and also broke down the importance of being professional in the record industry.
“In a sense, you can’t be the rebellious kid that you was when you had a nine-to-five,” Namebrand says in a clip that debuted as a part of today’s DX Daily. “When you was living at Mom’s you could be rebellious and shit like that ’cause you had a check or had some cushion at the house. Now this is all I do. So every move is calculated, you gotta understand that this is a business. You dealing with people who put you in a position to be very lucrative for your family. Knowing that, you have to know that being professional, showing up on time, those types of things that go with business really reflects who you are and reflects [upon] your reputation as a person. This industry is small. Word travels.
“If you move efficiently and calculated, professionally, it minimizes the things of you doing to not put you in a position to set you back three or four months, even a year,” he went on. “I’ve seen that happen to the homies. Three or four moves put them in a hole because they wanna be the same dude they was five or six years ago when they was living at home. You can’t be like that no more. This is a business. The people who got money don’t like dealing with bullshit.”
Sounds more the words of a company man and not the thoughts of an artist. That is what’s wrong with music today (IMO), not enough artistry and risk takers. Everything is “calculated”, “professional” and “efficient” to the point where it’s formulaic. Music by the numbers. It’s so crazy, the artist’s even tell the music lovers to their face that it’s nothing but a business to them, LOL. To the artis, the music fan is nothing but a means to an end. If you claim to be a musician, creating EXCELLENT MUSIC should be your goal.
shut up bitch. making excellent music doesnt get you anywhere but in prison or killed. you have to humble your art and do what is most productive so you can feed your family.
Don’t let ’em start the rumor.
