Murs Pays His Dues (DX EXCLUSIVE)

Independent hip hop has garnered a lot of attention from critics, fans and the media. A large number of emcees have created an incredible buzz through word-of-mouth guerrilla-styled marketing and some straight up hustling of music. One of those emcees is West Coast rapper Murs.

Murs has collaborated with various artists including E-40, Slug, John Cena and 9th Wonder, and now with the help of Guerrilla Union, he is planning to bring his brand of hip hop in the form of a festival similar to Scribble Jam and The Warped Tour titled The Paid Dues Festival. He took time out of his hectic schedule to speak with us about the show and future plans.

The Paid Dues Festival will showcase various artists including The Living Legends, Aesop Rock, El-P, Felt (Murs and Slug), Blueprint, Brother Ali and others. It will all go down March 11 in San Bernardino, CA. It will be held at The Orange Pavillion at the NOS Event Center.

Now Murs wasn’t alone in making this happen, but he spear-headed the event.

“I felt there was a need within our genre for a live platform that showcased our brand of hip hop exclusively. And I thought who better to help facilitate the manifestation of this dream than Guerilla Union. They are simply the best when it comes to doing hip hop events,” he explained to HipHopDX.

“This was just my idea of bringing all of my friends together with all of our fans to show everyone how powerful and amazing this thing we all (fans and artists) created is,” he added.

In order to further advance underground Hip-Hop’s influence, there is also an underground video magazine on the way titled MCTV #1. The DVD will feature indie-heavyweights Slug, 9th Wonder and Mr. Dibbs and will be hosted by Murs himself.

Due to the Paid Dues Show, many of the artists on the bill may soon become close partners in rhyme. Some are already associates and Murs hopes to build on that.

“I’m sure we will continue to collaborate as we have in the past. And maybe this meeting of the minds will spark some new energy between those of
us who havent worked together before,”
    he said of the show.

After receiving rave reviews for his latest efforts Murs 3:16-The 9th Edition with 9th Wonder and A Tribute to Lisa Bonet with Slug (of Atmosphere) many are anticipating the next album from Murs. According to Murs, the wait for his next album is soon to be over and the next LP Murs & 9th Wonder-Murray’s Revenge will drop March 21.
