“Most Important Southern Hip Hop Albums” Listed

green-label.com has compiled “The Most Important Southern Hip Hop Albums Ever,” a list highlighting work from artists from notable Southern cities, including Atlanta, New Orleans and Houston.

One of the albums to open doors for the South was OutKast’s debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, an introduction to the work of Big Boi and Andre Benjamin.

“Using their music as a means of advocating personal responsibility, ‘Git Up, Git Out’ served as a wake up call for the shiftless that also notably signaled the arrival of Goodie Mob,” the piece says.

Other Southern albums to make notable impact according to the Green Label list include Juvenile’s 400 Degreez and Ridin’ Dirty by UGK. In addition, early work from Three 6 Mafia that made it possible for Juicy J to be welcomed back in more recent years is also highlighted.

    1. There are no “important” south albums. What does the south have that’s equal to OB4CL or Illmatic? Nothing. Fuck the south

      1. Dude, you cannot be serious. Illmatic is a great album. But “Speakerboxx/The Love Below” was just as important to rap. That ablum diversified Outkast’s portfolio, not to mention it solidified them as the best rap selling duo EVER!” Albums like that as well as the others mentioned above are southern classics. Hip hop doesnt stop because it was made in the south.

      2. “Speakerboxx/The Love Below” will always be among the greatest hip hop albums. The album is the second hip hop album ever to win the Album of the Year Grammy, so you oughta show it some love. No reason to hate on the South.

    2. 8 ball and MJG – sittin on top of the world is one of the best front to back storytelling southern albums ever!!!

    3. Fuck yall regular pie ass ny hating ass niggas. DX, One of your best works this year. That list is perfect…

    4. This list is wack to me but it doesn’t have the following:

      Scarface’s The Diary
      Outkast ATLiens
      Outkast Aquemeni
      Tonedeff Archetype
Ludacris Word of Mouth (his first album is dope imo)

    5. The only way this list could be fucked up is if Three 6 Mafia wasn’t on it. Everybody coied their sounds and still do today.

    6. 2 Live Crew’s Two Live Is What We Are is definitely one of the most important Southern Hip Hop Albums. Not the best, but definitely one of the most important.

      1. 8Ball & MJG? 3 6 Mafia? David Banner? Devin The Dude? Trick Daddy? Bubba Sparxxx? Lol, I mean, this shit is just off the top of my head. Get out of here man.

    7. what’s this, a “only a few impt albums coming from the south” story? hip hop is a lost art. stop trying to put this shit on the south. we have money-hungry people who don’t care about making anything with quality that are at the forefront of hiphop. That’s what’s wrong. Trying to find ways to say the south had only a few good albums is bs. There are only a few east coast albums out right now that sound good. Jigga sold his soul, Nas just can’t make a great album anymore.

    8. Scarface diary and fix. Loved seeing krit wuz here on that list. Little brother too. Im not a giant fan of that record tho.

    9. i aint clickinh links

BUT IF THE LIST AINT GOT

SOUL FOOD THEN IT DONT KNOW SHIT, SOUL FOOD IS THE ILLMATIC OF THE SOUTH, CLASSIC FROM START TO FINISH….
