Metro Boomin, who released both his solo albums through a branch of Universal Music Group, is relieved the music corporation will be cutting ties with TikTok.

On Tuesday (January 30), news broke of a disagreement that will result in both companies parting ways and UMG’s entire catalog being pulled from the social media platform.

“Wow just like that the TikTok era of music is over” one person Tweeted in response to the news. The superstar producer came across the post and quoted it with a GIF of LeBron James saying: “It’s About Damn Time” after he won his first championship with the Miami Heat in 2012.

A little later, he wrote a post of his own and said: “I love the creativity and appreciation the kids show for the music on TikTok but I don’t like the forced pandering from artists and labels that results in these lifeless and soulless records.”

Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Nicki Minaj are just some of the A-listers who will have their music removed from TikTok.

The two companies have failed to agree on a new deal relating to artist compensation and artificial intelligence, and because of which the music giant is refusing to license music to the app moving forward.

The deal is set to expire at midnight on Wednesday (January 31). Given that terms on a new contract have not yet been agreed on, UMG will cease to provide music to the social media platform after said deadline.

Soon after reports of the unsuccessful negotiations went public, TikTok issued the following statement: “It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.

“Despite Universal’s false narrative and rhetoric, the fact is they have chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent.

“TikTok has been able to reach ‘artist-first’ agreements with every other label and publisher. Clearly, Universal’s self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans.”
