Meek Mill has shared the moment that motivated him to become the rapper he is today — tears and all.

During a recent appearance on Urban One Originals, the Philly rapper reflected on his very first rap battle, revealing it left him an emotional mess.

“My first time rap battling — this some real shit — that n-gga made me cry,” he began. “I was like a badass young boy at the time. We was battling, but it wasn’t about the battle.

“My whole hood was laughing at me and I never got laughed at about shit. You can’t mess with my sneakers, nothing!” he continued, grimacing at the camera.

“I turned around and peeped with my eyes, got that lump in my throat, started crying and walked off. I said, ‘All y’all n-ggas gonna be banging my shit!’

“I was like 12, 13 years old. Shoutout to Dun Duddy, he fucked me up in that battle […] That n-gga was rapping like he was 18! I swear to God, that n-gga made me cry.”

Meek went on to reveal that having his butt handed to him in the rap battle gave him the “motivation” to be who he is today.

Despite finding fame and success under Rick Ross‘ wing, Meek Mill recently shared his frustrations regarding the music industry — but he has a plan to make it work.

Taking to Twitter earlier this week, the Dream Chasers boss shared his thoughts on the current streaming model.

“It’s not possible to make money off .003 a stream from your favorite fans,” he said. “I used to sell my wholesale price at 5.00 when whole sale was 2.50 hard copy …. It’s not logical … I can sell 35k copies at 2 arena shows of people there to see me the system falling I got it tho.”

The day prior, the 36-year-old revealed that he was fully independent, thus earning a much larger portion of his music royalties — and once again sought out distribution for his Dream Chasers imprint.

“I own 100% of my masters and publishing now ima rap and have a ball with it and make music that touch people worldwide!” Meek wrote. “For licensing or distribution me and all DREAM CHASER ARTIST are totally independent… we looking for top tier distribution.”
