Hip hop pioneer MC Lyte is teaming up with Spelman college in Atlanta, Georgia to present Hip Hop Week. The week began yesterday and will conclude this Friday, November 4.
Several major players in the hip hop community will come together on the campus to address a variety of issues within the culture.
The influence that hip hop has on its target audience and the social implications of that influence will be discussed in depth as well as many other issues.
Hip Hop Week comes on the heels of activist C. Delores Tucker’s death. Tucker was outspoken on the harmful effects of “gangsta rap” in the 90’s, taking issue with the violence and misogyny glorified in the music.
Davey D, actor Malcolm Jamal Warner and emcees Da Brat and Yo Yo will all take part in the upcoming week’s events.
Spelman college was founded in 1881. It is the only historically Black college in the nation to be included on the U.S. News and World Report’s list of top 75 “Best Liberal Arts Colleges — Undergraduate,” 2005.
