“Today is history,” he said. “We’ve come a long way. Growing up in New Orleans, when I was a kid, I looked at the University of New Orleans basketball program as probably one of the best in the country. Every kid wanted to come to the Lakefront Arena and be a part of this.

“I’m just so appreciative and blessed that God has given me this opportunity … to rebuild this program. We gonna change this. This is our culture, this is our team and this is our family. We want to give that family love out here to the city to bring the people back where it should be at.”

Master P has been known for his love of basketball for decades, dating back to playing in the Charlotte Hornets’ training camp in early 1999. Last year, he even openly vied for a coaching job for his hometown team, the New Orleans Pelicans.

“I think we got a great team,” he told TMZ. “I just think that maybe we gotta wait a couple more years.”

He volunteered to help that process along, closing his interview by directly addressing the team’s management.

“Y’all need to put me on the coaching staff next year [and] we gonna win the whole thing,” he said.

By P’s side during the interview was the next generation of basketball talent in the family, his son Mercy Miller.

In 2023, the younger Miller broke his Notre Dame High School scoring record with a 68-point game.

Mercy now plays for the University of Houston following his record-breaking high school career, while another one of P’s sons, Hercy Miller, plays for the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds.

Hercy’s collegiate career was recently threatened, however, as he was arrested and accused of stealing refrigerators alongside two of his teammates in December.
