Mac Miller’s “Blue Slide Park” Projected To Debut At No. 1

Back in 1995, Death Row duo Tha Dogg Pound struck it big on the charts when their independently released debut Dogg Food debuted at number one with 278,000 copies sold. Now, it looks like Mac Miller will be the first indie artist to top the charts since Daz and Kurupt dropped, with Blue Slide Park projected to sell 100,000 copies.

MTV reports that the Pittsburgh-born rapper’s debut album Blue Slide Park, which dropped this past Tuesday via Rostrum Records, is expected to crack the top of the Billboard charts at the number one spot. Rostrum head honcho Benjy Grinberg explained that the label learned a lot of different means to promote music through work ing with Wiz Khalifa, and that Mac reaped the benefits of that experience.

“We’ve learned a lot about the ins and outs of the majors and how different things operate [through working with Wiz Khalifa],” Grinberg says. “We try to apply those lessons to everything we do…I’m not on some sort of revolutionary [anti-major] kick. I just know there are better ways of doing things.”

    1. for a major thats not impressive

…but this kid isnt on a major!
This shit is impressive! Big up to Mac and im not even a fan of him

      1. Not impressive? He made more than Big Sean did in his first week sales. 200,000 to 300,000 in the first week would be on the upper end of projected estimates for even most established major label artists. You have to be a true pop culture icon and super star to have near-Gold or near-Platinum sales in the first week. They wouldn’t be building diamond statues of him, no, but any major label would be more than happy to have an artist who can generate first week sales of 100k.

      2. @ThatKidWithTheCrown you didn’t read properly.. he said it wouldn’t be impressive to sell 100, 000 for a major, but in this is case it is impressive because mac ain’t major bro

      3. @Anonymous you didnt read correctly…crown is saying that it IS impressive for a major label artist to sell 100k in the first week which it is in this day of leaks and pirating…to the main point it is exponentially impressive for an independent artist to do these kinds of sales

      1. MMMM…NO!!! 100k..lets say that makes a million dollar. no way he’s gettin 60% of that revenue. I know hes gonna get some big money, but 60%? pretty sure not

still impressive. get money boy..even tho he trash

    2. I’m not sure if these numbers or the enduring popularity of Herman Cain are the greater indictment of America in 2011.

      1. HELL YEAH!! Fuck whack miller yo, Tech N9ne and STRANGE MUSIC ALL DAY ALL NIGHT. Tech should be #1 not this clown.. And Tech is 10000000000000000% more INDEPENDENT than this kid

    3. He’s actually projected to sell about 150k-180k this week, for an indie artist that is excellent, and with nothing even close to a major crossover single. He’s seeing more money than Big Sean did off Finally Famous and that’s with My Last, Marvin & Chardonnay, & A$$ as singles, and big promotion. That Shit Cray!

    4. damn 100 k for an independant artist is great!!!!!!!! heis selling as much as artist on a a big label without selling his soul!!!..i think he has potential….drake could have changed the game with being an indie artist but he was too scared so he played it safe with ymcmb…..

      1. Hey whats all this business about him not selling his soul. His music is on par with a lot of these big label sellout rappers, so what’s to stop him from selling units? Your making It out as If him being indie is such a big deal when he has so many of these young kids(that are also fans of wale, minaj, and drake etc) on his jock.

    5. dx got this wrong he is projected to sell between 170 and 180k and that is really crazy this kid is about to do big thangz alot of artist will be goin independent after this mac will have that jay z money in about 10yrs if he keeps this up i mean he will prob go gold with an independent album thats some major cake right there he will make twice as much as drake did on his last album and he sold 1.5 mil

    6. Unfortunately making music geared towards prepubescent males and valley girls is the only way to sell units…Chuck D must be so proud…

      1. You’re right but his real issue is that he’s not a good lyricist. He’ll be pushing Donkey kong rhymes till he’s 30 and his kiddie skater fanbase grow tired of him.

    7. We already know Mac waited until you only have to sell 100k to do #1 thats fine good self promotion. but question which of these albums will do better Welcome To Strangeland Fear of God II or the underdog The DiV I know the last one is a laugh but answer the question which of the 3 will do the best?

    8. props to Mac Miller for really doin it big w/the indie market…I personally dnt like his music but he’s smart and once his vuzz is big enuff, he’ll make the right business move

    9. this is some ignorant reporting…this would definitely NOT be the first album to go number 1 independently since dogg pound…maybe hip hop, but how can you forget to mention the arcade fire? they debuted at number one and won album of the year grammy just last year…

      1. Master P was number 1 a number of times and he was independent wasn’t he?

and what about Slim Thug wasn’t that guy a independent artist?

      2. That album “The Suburbs” was released in the UK on Mercury, which is owned by Universal, the largest record label in the world. Not exactly indie. Arcade Fire’s marketing budget greatly exceeds that of Mac Miller. Spike Jonze directed the video for their title track, for chrissakes.

That being said, Mac Miller sucks.

      1. Keep hatin’ buddy, keep hatin’, we all feed off of you and point and laugh at your whack ass at the same time 🙂

      1. you mean real broke ass niggaas…your opinion is irrelevant..lol real niggas thats why you on this site though?

    10. IT BOTHERS ME THAT A CORNY ASS, SUBPAR, LIER LIKE MAC MILLER COULD HAVE THRE MARKETING TEAM AND MONEY BEHIND HIM TO PUSH HIS MUSIC WHEN OTHER AMAZING TRUE HIPHOP “WHITE” EMCEES LIKE DIABOLIC, BEKAY, AND THAT GROUP OF EMCEE’S STILL GRIND CONSTANTLY TO STAY RELEVANT YET THEY ARE SOME OF THE SOPEST TO EVER SPIT AND WELL RESPECTED QACORSS THE BOARD, GO ASK SEAN P WHAT HE THINKS OF CATS LIKE BOLIC AND BEKAY, THEN SEE WHAT HE THINK SOF MAC MILLER. WHAT A FUCKING JOKE, PITTSBURGH SHOULD BE ASHAMED

    11. i hate how people try to discredit someones success because of there race….first it was “he can never sell cause he is white” now its “he only hot cause he is white”..smh…i never hear this with drake cause he is half white…whats waynes excuse for selling?….most hip hop fans that buy records are white but you guys make it seem that they only buy white rappers records….so its only cool when a white guy buys a black mans record but wack when he buys a white guys record?,,,,smh

      1. You’ve completely missed the boat. I hold rappers like drake in the same regard as mac, they’re both corny average level rappers. Everyone knows white people buy the latest rap cd’s. Hell, the only reason I don’t buy many of the latest shit is cause I’m still busy trying to buy the back catalogue on some of my favourite rappers from the golden era, which will not help anyone’s billboard position, but give me the peace of mind that I have the physical. I would never call out a rapper on his race but mac miller is a subpar rapper gaining fans left right and centre without having put in work into improving his rhymes. Its never been about race, there’s loads of white rappers that are better than him, that why mac fans are pissed.

      2. True that. Mac Miller is something you listen on radio. No real shit, no amazing shit, he is just making a fun music. Btw if you think people discredit him by race then why the hell Eminem and Yela got many attentions.

Same things can be said against that one hit wonder rapper Asher Roth. Both not my style, I threw it on the ground with LITTLE Wayne, Snoop Dogg and DJ Khaled records.

      1. You a damn Fool, go back to School. Rich white Kids buy Justin Bieber Concert Tickets, not an 7.99 USD Album on Amazon. Got it? 😉

    12. I don’t have anything against Mac Miller, but “Welcome to Strange Land” is a damn awesome album. The fact that it was much better than I anticipated made up for how disappointed I was in the Wale album.

      1. you expected something from a wale album?

put the kid down you fat trollish ginger slob nerd.

looks like you wanna eat his face. fat boy.

    13. props to mac no fan caught a couple of his videos which the songs wasnt that badd

man give props and stfu and keep movin its real easy to do

    14. i rather listen to KIDS and the High Life. This album is junk..i deleted it after downloading it for free. I even took it one step further and tweeted him that.

big sean and drake..they have great mixtapes but terrible albums.

    15. All this is, is justification from the white execs to promote white acts. his marketing budget was small b/c he was on an indie and he does 200k first week…. watch for machine gun kelly, yealawolf, v-nasty, kreashawn…white acts are taking over rap…it happened to rock and roll back in the days….
