Lupe Fiasco is set to be named 2023 Rap Laureate at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. library in Washington, D.C. on behalf of Words, Beats & Life.

The non-profit announced that Lupe Fiasco will receive the honor on Saturday (April 8) during the Remixing the Art of Social Change conference at the prestigious library. It comes alongside the launch of new publication The Rap Laureate.

The publication will focus on honoring Hip Hop culture while educating youth from all walks of life and help bridge the gap between Hip Hop and academics.

For the inaugural issue of The Rap Laureate, co-writers Dr. Jason Nichols and Mikal Amin Lee delve into the career of Lupe Fiasco and how his contributions to music culture make him one of the most important rappers of the past two decades.

  • Hip-Hop Futures: The Next 50 (10:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m.)
  • Rap Laureate Presentation: Lupe Fiasco (11:10 a.m.–12:10 p.m.)
  • Lunch Break (12:10 p.m.–12:45 p.m.) — Lunch will be provided to all general admission registrants.
  • Fellows Breakout Session (1:00 p.m.–2:20 p.m.)
  • The 5th Element: The State of Hip-Hop Scholarship (2:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.)

Featured panelists include Dr. Elliot Gann, Piper Carter, and Martha Diaz, to name a few.

The Chicago native caught wind of the exciting news on March 14 and responded on Twitter with a smiling emoji featuring rosy red cheeks.
