Lil Wayne has said that skateboarding has served as a form of therapy for him, and described the benefits of the sport in a sit-down with legendary skater Tony Hawk.

Hawk, who spoke with Weezy in an interview on his Do You Skate? podcast, commended Tuncehi for “championing” the art of skating to a new audience.

“It’s a lifestyle,” Wayne said at the 19-minute mark. “They ask me what’s the organic reason, and I tell them it never changes. The most organic reason for me is I remember having so much on my mind, dealing with the business and I remember totally just going to sesh and someone had to remind me of the things that were on my mind when I was finished with that session.”

He continued, “They always ask me, ‘it’s a getaway? It’s a release for you?’ Nah it’s simple. You can’t put your feet on four wheels on some wood and start kicking and start thinking about nothing else other than what’s in front of you and on the side of you. That’s all you can think about so you do that for three hours straight, four hours straight and you forgot what the hell was on your mind…you can actually ask questions after that.”

Lil Wayne’s devout love of skating has been known for over a decade now, and the rapper finally went pro at the end of 2022.

Pro skaters Torey Pudwill, Keelan Dadd, Yosef Ratleff and Phil Lopez surprised Weezy at the end of December by gifting him a pro model board decorated with a photo of the rapper as a child along with some of Weezy’s favorite rap lyrics.

“This was a Christmas gift, but I decided to turn it into a surprise because it would be more meaningful that way,” Lopez said. “As Wayne’s videographer, I wanted to do something special for him that he’d remember. I approached Torey, owner of Thank You Skate Co., with the board design, and he was able to help execute the production process.”

In a video of the moment, Wayne can be seen shocked by the gift, and sits on the floor of the skatepark with a massive smile on his face while he’s flooded with his custom boards. He was nearly speechless as he walked around and thanked everyone for their generosity.

“THANK YOU GANG!” Tunechi wrote on Instagram next to a photo of him posing with his pro model skateboard and fellow skaters.

He later hit the skatepark with his new board and showcased some fresh new moves on Instagram.
