Lil Wayne released his rock-inspired LP Rebirth last year, but his love for the genre run deep. Speaking with MTV News, Weezy shared his love for Nirvana’s Nevermind in honor of its 20th anniversary, explaining how it inspired his rebellious spirit.
“Because I was young and I actually listened to the lyrics, and I probably felt at that time that I was rebelling and I could associate myself with that and relate to the things [Cobain] was talking about and speaking about in the song,” he said. “I probably couldn’t, but I thought I could.”
As part of MTV News’ “Nirvana: The Nevermind You Never Knew,” the network will air “Nirvana’s Legacy: Today’s Biggest Stars Remember,” where Tunechi will reminisce on the album alongside Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Zooey Deschanel.

As much as I detest and loath this cretin, I commend Wayne for showin’ love to an exceptional, seminal, important and special album. For whatever reason, Kurt and ’em are the only rock band that receive love from Black street dudes. I’ve never let that influence my opinions on them, I just had love them cats ’cause their music was emotional and it hit me in a visceral manner. On my left wrist I have the Nevermind logo tattooed on it, on the right it’s Illmatic. Two superb ’90s LPs that have yet to be bettered in their respective genres.
Are we sure that Wayne has ever listened to Nevermind because I can’t imagine someone thinking that Rebirth should go anywhere but the garbage if Nevermind was an important record to them?
