Joe Budden & Royce Da 5’9 Review Ex-Slaughterhouse Members Joell Ortiz & KXNG Crooked’s New Album

Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5’9 and KXNG Crooked — collectively known as Slaughterhouse — dropped two albums, multiple EPs and mixtapes over a roughly 10-year period. The group ultimately dissolved in 2018 when Crooked announced his departure. As Budden went on to pursue his podcast dreams, the other three members continued their solo rap careers.

On March 10, KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz reunited for a new album called The Rise and Fall of Slaughterhouse. Prior to its arrival, Budden and Ortiz wound up getting into an argument on Instagram Live with Budden telling his former collaborator, “That album can suck my dick!” Now that the project is out, Budden decided to invite Royce on to his podcast to discuss the album in an episode titled, “Crook & Joell Are Playing The Victims.”

But judging by Joe Budden and Royce Da 5’9 comments, they didn’t get what they were expecting. Considering the title, Budden and Royce seemed to think it was going to be one big diss record — and it wasn’t. In fact, they concluded the rollout caused more damage than the actual album itself.

“They kept saying, ‘just wait until you hear the album,'” Budden said. “For me, it was a little anticlimactic. It was like a rollercoaster. You watch it go up. It’s going up and it’s going up, and you expect the … and then you’re let down.”

Budden then described the album as a “mouse trap with monetary gain attached” and admitted he felt tricked into reacting to the project so it would get more attention.

“It speaks to their sense of quality control… There’s such thing that you can do to bring down the quality of the brand,” Royce said. “There’s such thing you can do to raise the quality of the brand.” He also added he was bothered Ortiz and Crooked appeared to blame them for all the “messed-up” decisions other members have made.

Royce Da 5’9 & Joe Budden Show Disapproval For Joell Ortiz & KXNG Crooked New 'Slaughterhouse’

KXNG Crooked spoke about Slaughterhouse’s demise during a recent episode of The Bootleg Kev Podcast and suggested Budden wasn’t being truthful about what went down.

“Put yourself in the fans shoes for a minute,” he said. “You’ve been waiting on one of your favourite groups in the world to drop an album for 10 years. Now behind the scenes, I’ve been taking flights to New York, go talk to Paul Rosenberg. I’ve been taking flights to Detroit, talking to Em, talking to Royce, how can we put this back together? It’s not happened in 10 years. So you’re telling me you want me to wait again and then I saw something where Royce said that we weren’t waiting on anybody… that’s a lie.

“So I need to address all this stuff because whenever they say that I just come back with the truth. You can attack my character my integrity, you could try to assassinate it and say that I’m a liar and I’m doing this for money and all that shit.”

    1. So they got mad about a project they didn’t want to be apart of and then was unhappy when they didn’t get dissed on the album and then go on to say that it was just for monetary gain when Joe has Royce on his show to review the album for monetary gain.

      1. Essentially what happens when you try to make sense of anything Joe Budden does. He’s consistently inconsistent. Those pills be fucking with his mind some days.

    2. Royce and Joe come off as clowns. It was different when we were all younger and I “looked up” to them from a distance, but I’m riding with Crook on this. Ever since joes podcast, him calling Em trash after admitting he idolized him, Royce being obliterated by Lupe, not responding. Joe not rapping on Glass House. It’s like the two of them think they are somehow bigger than the group, or the culture. lol and they are not. Jay-Z can get away with rappers throwing shots and not responding. Em can too but is still such an emcee at heart, he’ll reply for better or worse. Royce and Joe don’t have this stature. And as far as the album is concerned, why would Crook and Joell lie? The album is decent and transparent. Crook is crazy on it, Joell too but Nickel and Buddens opinions mean nothing, on an album they’re getting exposed on. Get back in the booth or stfu

      1. That’s the bottom line. Joe carries himself like he’s an all time great, and he’s the worst member of the group. Royce is dope, but dude needs to check himself too. Crook especially can rap circles around him. That I’m bigger than you shit is corny as hell,e specially when one guy got there by being Eminem’s hype man, and the other guy got there by everything else but his music.

    3. The only thing that Crook and Joell did wrong was use the group logo. Royce and Joe shouldn’t be mad, they didn’t wanna be apart of it or atleast didn’t make it a priority to try to be a part of it so they moved on without them. Now they wanna complain and act like the victims? Lol. I’m a fan of all four but I’m siding with Crook and Joell Ortiz on this one.

      1. They didn’t do anything wrong on that either. Hell, old groups who don’t have any original members anymore still use the name and imagery. Fuck Joe Budden trying to claim ownership of something he was done with. If he wasn’t acting like a bitch, he would have given his blessing since he said he was through rapping, and Royce is acting like a bitch for hiding behind he’s riding with Joe instead of saying the truth, that he just didn’t want to rock with the group anymore. The bottom line is that they delivered a quality project, and that’s all I’m here for. More of this. I hope the next one comes out soon.

        1. I get that, but it was a group logo. If the group dies, the logo dies with it… what would’ve been pretty cool imo, is if they would’ve had only half the pig, dripping blood and you can see all the insides. That would symbolize two things in the album, it’s only half the group on it, and we’re gonna show you what went on in the group, behind the scenes.

          1. All of The Temptations are dead. All of the members of a lot of these old groups are dead, and people are still touring with the name. Slaughterhouse isn’t any different than them. I just think it was some I’m bigger than you shit Joe tried to pull because of his podcast fame, which is lame. We’ve seen for almost two decades how this dude carries himself and why there are always issues with him in business.

    4. Lots of finger pointing. The only two that are putting it in a record to cause a real discussion is Joell and Crook. Slaughterhouse fans deserve an explanation.

    5. Album is a banger. Joe destroyed the group like everything else he’s involved in.

Royce I love but has been getting more cornier than an Orville redenbacher factory every day.

      1. Yep. I was kind of surprised because I was underwhelmed by the original Slaughterhouse at making actual music. However, Crook and Ortiz delivered a great album. They need to stick with this and see where it goes. They have great chemistry as a duo.

        1. Joell did say Crook I’m always more comfortable on your side, horseshoe what it do…. on Brother’s keeper 1

          1. I think Budden was the one who was never as tight with the other two, which especially Joel alluded to several times, but I think something happened with Royce along the way. As mentioned by others, he can switch up on people in a minute, so it’s not surprising. From my vantage point, he seems to not have been feeling the group thing and hid behind that he didn’t want to cross Joe. I thought them as a trio would be best, but these two made the best music by far I’ve heard out of them.

    6. Think the whole thing was one big publicity stunt, which is sad that that’s what they had to do to get ink, but whatever. We’re living in the WWE era.

    7. Joe’s more successful now than he ever was as a rapper, and they’re jealous. Plain and simple. He’s the issue stopping their bag, while finding a way to get his own. If he was broke without his own platform they wouldn’t care about him at all…

      1. Nobody is jealous. What the fuck is there to be jealous of? He found a lane and ran with it. But most of us want music. That’s what we’re here for.

    8. Album is flames by the way. Ortiz stepped his game up, and Crook is always on point. They actually have better chemistry without the other two, especially Budden who I never thought fit anyway. Kind of crazy that he’s the one who broke the group up since he’s the least talented.

    9. It’s a dope album. I disagree with the sentiment that the chemistry between the two of them is better than Slaughterhouse though. Slaughterhouse was special.

    10. This is the perfect stage for whiney bitches like royce and budden. Get your your rocks off with your 2 cents worth of speech entitlement and punditry on some sad ass podcast. These two epitomize bitterness in rap perfectly and the love of their own voices talking shit every chance they get. ConYe need to get him a little podcast because this must be therapy for the lamest rappers. Shame on Eminem for attempting to boost two of the most annoying dorks in rap.

    11. Imma say it like this. The title, the use of the pic, and even all the way down to the font style, Joell and Crooked did what they did and I agree with Royce and Joe there. If you go look at Joe’s response where he died the album was anticlimactic he is referring to the beef that was started by using the group name on the album. There was very little dissing. The only one who truly talked trash about the album was Royce and even his was more about they approach of rollout, and that had he and Joe been involved the bars would have been even better because he knows they would compete more for the best verses. That’s not even to say the album is trash but they worked together for years and Royce knows they(crooked and Joell) have another gear of rap that they could have achieved. So while you may hear fire bars, the pros are hearing (oh bruh could have done more there)

      1. Joe isn’t a pro though, he retired the better part of a decade ago. and he was starting to fall off towards the end of his career (the battle with hollow smh) .
and while Royce is still rapping…(somewhat..mickey and Lupe cough cough) this album was rapping in a higher gear than anything he’s put out since bar exam 4. (Allegory is hugely overrated in my uncommon opinion)
that being said the two of them have no leg to stand on sitting on a couch not rapping while criticizing the raps of anyone else.

    12. Man these guys salty af! Especially Royce, they wanted no part of the group and didn’t put the effort to get back together and to say the album is “trash” man Royve being a mad hater.. Crooked and Joell were the top 2 members in my opinion anyways.

    13. I agree with Royce & Joe…… Joell and Crooked seemed like they was mad because what was their backup if rap didnt work or other venture. you not about to use the slaughterhouse name all while trashing Joe as a rollout to get a album to sale but then ask joe to promote the album for you on live thats mad crazy to me.

    14. Sitting on a couch yappin’ instead of rapping! Smfh! Royce used to be one of my favorite MC’s. Dude is a walking contradiction though. Him and Joe are super corny. We saw what happened with Mickey and Lupe. Homeboy went from talking real greezy to acting like a hurt teenage girl when he realized they weren’t scared off all that talking he was doing about checking boxes and came right for his neck.Ain’t never been a guest on Joes podcast but now he’s sitting up there trying to talk down on something he thought couldn’t happen without him and did. Now him and Joe are showing their true colors.
