The National Museum of Hip Hop is facing a feud with pioneers of the culture. While the organizers want to honor the history of Hip Hop, some pioneers are saying that the museum is “illegitimate,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
Many of Hip Hop’s pioneers have been involved with the museum as advisers, but they also want to get paid for their personal accounts and more. While the museum has not been opened yet, it seems it will not get support from some pioneers due to these differences.
In April, a gala was held at Manhattan’s Pink Elephant club. Some of the culture’s trailblazers claimed they were not invited while Craig Wilson, a Bronx native who is leading the museum’s efforts, said that they were invited but that they asked for celebrity treatment and last minute meetings. In the end, many boycotted the Pink Elephant event, an act that has put a strain on the relationship between pioneers and the museum.
KRS-One shed some light on this.
“They deserve to get paid. This wouldn’t be a gift. More like an honorarium for scholars…This dude (Wilson) is arguing with the gods!”
Wilson says that it shouldn’t be about money.
“We’re doing this for the culture. Period. Not for one specific group, or the pioneers. It’s up to them whether they want to be down with it or not.”
Late in April, about 40 rappers and veterans met at S.O.B.’s in New York. Now, they have formed The Universal Federation for Preservation of Hip Hop Culture to generate funds for pioneers. The Federation also plans on licensing collective memorabilia more to museums to make money.

I think we really need to ask ourselves the question, or find out: Do other Hall of Fames/Museums , whether its music or sports, pay their inductees/contributers?
Will there be any cost associated with getting into the National Hip Hop Museum? If so, why not provide some kick back to the pioneers? Not saying they have to bank rolled, but some compensation would be fair.
This is complicated. How do you set a list of everyone who is a ‘pioneer’? Sure, you can list names off the top of your head, but what there are alot of people who had more roles then others and it would be hard to distrubute the claim fairly. Plus museums take alot of money to upkeep, if we wanted to further the progress of hip-hop appreciation these pioneers gotta realize that a non-profit organization such as a museum couldn’t possibly pay them. The museum is not here as repairations for the record label’s abuse of early hip-hop stars. Thats not its purpose at all, lets not get it twisted.

These institutions are not in the business of making money.. they are generally for educational and historical purposes.. literally.

KRS One does more then people can hear or see on TV or web sites. Just because he hasn’t done anything in the mainstream doesn’t mean he’s not relavent. He’s constantly making music, which is all I ask of him, not to mention stuff like this to preserve real hip hop. I understand the feeling you may have with compensation but this is the problem with the music industry today. Artist are not getting paid for their art. How many of you on here are going out and buying the music. I’m willing to bet most of you here bitching are the ones downloading free shit. These artist live off of the art so let them get paid. Was all this done right, maybe not but we shouldn’t be arguing about the money we should be bitching at the people who are organizing. I say trust in KRS because his intentions are for the good of hip hop.
KRS and buckshot just dropped an album last year and it was ill. Kris will still lyrically murder your favorite rapper and he’s in his 40’s. He was the only one on the BET hip hop awards who actually ‘freestyled’ rather than spit a written rap, and it was the best of all of them.
Everyone gives credit to Jay Z for Death of Autotune, but KRS and Buckshot had the concept 6 months before DOA was released.
just because he’s not on MTV doesn’t mean he isn’t still relevant. If you get the chance to go to a KRS show you’ll know why he’s viewed as one of the best emcees ever.

I don’t get it…what exactly are these dudes trying to get paid for? If they put in a lot of work for the museum then they should get paid for their work. But just for being pioneers? Bullshit. I don’t know the details, but I think someone said it was a non-profit museum, which means even the people running the fucking thing aren’t making bank, so why would they give out a bunch of checks to old-school rappers? This is a museum to honor and educate about hip-hop, not a fucking fundraiser to right the wrongs of the past.
And for everyone saying these dudes deserve compensation for everything they put into hip-hop, you’re right, they should. But the point is it’s not the museum’s job to provide that compensation. We should be happy somebody wanted to put in the work and cash to get the thing running in the first place.
