Kevin Gates returned on Friday (February 19) with the surprise release of his Only The Generals Pt. II sequel. The 12-track effort came together during a recent trip to Puerto Rico which provided creative inspiration when reconnecting with family and feeling a “beautiful energy” to make music like he never has before.
“They call Puerto Rico ‘La Isla Del Encanto,’ which means ‘The Island of Enchantment,'” the Baton Rouge rapper said in a statement. “The energy here is beautiful. My inspiration in going there was the people in my family. They talk about it with a spirit. There’s magic to it. The music I made in Puerto Rico is like no other. The island makes you move with energy, and I could feel my grandmother’s spirit around me. It’s just where the fuck I came from.”
He continued, “To be a general, you’re on the frontline, but you still govern. Whether you’re a man, a woman, or a child, you’ve got responsibilities. When you’re a general, you recognize those responsibilities. This project speaks to the heart, so it’s only for the generals. It’s not an album. I just wanted to bless the game with something beautiful.”
Pt. II follows the original 2019 EP and includes the previously released “Plug Daughter 2” single. Gates also dropped off a fresh visual rediscovering his roots in the “Puerto Rico Luv” video.
Gates collected another plaque earlier this week when his 2020 “Broken Love” collaboration with Mo3 went gold. The RIAA certification serves as the first for the late Dallas rapper, who was killed in his hometown during a November interstate shooting.

Long Live Mo! It went gold ONLY because its MO SONG! Mo was the most baddest artist this day and age. I was born in the 80s and it has been a long minute since i was a fan of a artist to this extreme. The only other artist i can compare as far as hype for me would have been the late great 2PAC! REST IN HEAVEN BROTHAS. YOU AND THE MUSIC WILL BE MISSED.
Also….Mo3 has a TON of other hits! Its sad that the world just now started listening to him. That dude go HARD! Listen to ALL his music….it will not disappoint. He has a long catalog. MO3 would have changed the game for sure. Sad how the world hate greatness.
