Kendrick Lamar Describes “Section.80” As “The Most Relatable Project For My Generation”

Kendrick Lamar dropped one of 2011’s best albums, Section.80, which addressed the difficulties faced by his generation. Speaking with Fly Times Daily, K.Dot described the LP as the most relatable body of work for those his age and voices the hardships they encounter.

Section.80, I would describe it as the most relatable project for my generation,” he said. “When I say Section.80, I say everything from 1980 to 2012, everything between that, from start to finish. That’s what it represents, period.”

He also touched on the LP’s opening track “Fuck Your Ethnicity,” elaborating on what he meant by the line “Matter fact, don’t mistake me for no fuckin’ rapper.” He said that artists tend to become bigger than themselves, but that he wants fans to know that he’s human first.

“Of course, I’m a rapper, but what I feel when I say that it’s bringing back the actual feeling of letting people know that you’re human. I think that’s what happens when you’re constantly listening to the radio and you’re constantly watching TV. You feel like you can’t touch these people. The artist gives off that vibe too. You’re not supposed to grab them, you’re not supposed to feel the same way. But at the end of the day, we’re all human beings. So when I say lines like that, don’t mistake me for no fuckin’ rapper, know that I am human. That’s first. Then, I’m an artist.”

    1. Kendrick Lamar=j. cole

As soon as he releases his album, all you ADD crack babies will label it as boring cause you don’t have the attention span to digest a message and he doesn’t have a “gimmick/schtick” to hold your attention.

      1. cole heatin up like that leftover lasgna
he raps like it’s christmas eve
        he cries sometimes
        you can’t outfart that nigga

Cole always was simple. Theres no shit to digest from him.

I came from the bottom, I came from the bottom
Don’t get bitches pregnant, Don’t get bitches pregnant
        paula abdul paula abdul

        GET OVER IT

      2. Lmaooo greatest comment ever @ eenope…. Ur right, Cole has always been hella simple, kendrick not so much.

    2. I dont get why niggas like Kendrick Lame.

      Lil B > Kendrick Lame
      Asap Rocky > Kendrick Lame
      Kreayshawn > Kendrick Lame
Tyler, THE Creator > Kendrick Lame
      Hodgy Beats > Kendrick Lame

    3. Album was great but you didn’t grow up in the damn 80s Kendrick. you got your first pimple in the mid 2000s, son. Chill with that. Is there somethin I missed? Is it just some clever way of sayin he’s wiser than the average joe? Album is dope but labeling it the representitve of that entire generation? wtf part of the generation does Rigamortis represent then?

      1. born in the 80s dumbass, the decade your born is considerd your generation. the album is the most relatable for generation Y.

    4. holy shit this little pop tart looks sounds and acts like a feline faggot.

sweet look bro. is that called a down low fade?

bunny eared beaver toothed queer that makes easy listening rap music for effeminate children.

      the future is bleak folks.

i’d rather wax my car than listen to section 80 ever again. audio sleeping pill.

sensitive nerds from compton get no love.

      1. dude, shut the fuck up. its people like you that ruin hip hop for fans. i’d love to know who you think is a good rapper because if you think kendrick is shit, i can’t imagine who you be listening to. fucking bitch nigga talking shit bout “nerds from compton” man shut the fuck up for real you don’t know shit about the “compton lifestyle or anything about kendrick for that matter. you just a hater of the real you bitch. go listen to your waka/gucci/basedfagget or maybe even some of that devil worshipping faggets Ye and Jay. Fuck you, fuck the haters of real hip hop, fuck the haters of real music, fuck all you bitches that don’t know shit about music but still talk your shit anyway PERIOD

      2. kendrick lamar didnt invent hip hop faggot. he sucks. his music sucks. his voice sucks. his trakcs suck. his crews sucks. his beats suck. if you think hes one of the greatest ever after a corny mixtape and a corny album you have awful taste and you need to get off the dick. call jay a devil worshipper all you want, hes still a better rapper even now for the simple fact his voice doesn’t suck. kids gravitate towards weak shit and assume if you dont like kendrick u must like gucci mane and wacka flocka. i like rappers who sound good over good beats, you know, like old shit, before faggots like you got into hip hop and started dictating what is and isnt dope. kendrick lamar will never blow, hes as big as hes gonna get right now, enjoy it, buy his album while u can, cuz hes a compton nerd rapping about his softer thoughts and that shit will never be hot, even now when rap sucks dick.

      3. Anon, your a lame ass hater with obviously too much time on ur hands, but that down low fade shit? Thumbs the fuck up

    5. The audio on that video is horrendous, however it was a great interview. I feel like Section 80 is one of those albums that just went over people’s heads. A lot of people either didn’t get what he was trying to do, or did and still feel like there’s no place for it. However there’s a rapidly growing place for artists like Kendrick and his TDE cohort Ab-Soul in Hip Hop today. “So the next time I talk about money, hoes, clothes, god, and history all in the same sentence, just know I meant it, and you felt it.” Kendrick understands the very core of Hip Hop, which is to express what you feel in such a way that others feel it. It doesn’t have to make perfect sense, it doesn’t always have to be deep or always have to be gangster, as long as you feel it. And if you don’t feel it, go listen to somethin’ else son!

      1. Totally agree Grizz. I’m 36 yrs old and I think Kendrick is brilliant son. Section.80 went over a lot of ppl’s heads for real.

      2. Most definitely. He’s in a tough spot as an artist, where he’s so enigmatic and good at what he does that it will be hard to keep him out of the mainstream, and at the same time a lot of cats that listen to mainstream stuff will have no idea what he’s talking about, or resent him for not cranking out club anthems and shoot’em’up tracks. It’s like once somebody hears “Compton”, if you’re not trying to bite off N.W.A. you’re no good. Have you heard brother Ab-Soul? Incredible as well, he’s got much more of a Taoist type delivery. He still says incredibly deep shit, just usually in a regular joe kind of way that makes it really relate-able and brilliant. These guys and artists like them are the future of Hip Hop, whether or not these “Rap” fans want to accept it or not.

      3. disagree 100% about what you said about section 80. the album itself was absolutely amazing. even my first time listening to it i didn’t think too much of it but once you understand it and listen to it a few more times you finally realize that the album is actually ridiculous. every track. the people that don’t like it didn’t listen to it enough or they are not listening/understanding kendrick. this is one of those albums where you not only have to just listen but you have to understand also. no disrespect, but IMO this album was probably one of the best of 2011 and 2012 will be an even bigger year for kendrick with his “Good Kid in a Mad City” album dropping give this young cat the respect he deserves because after 2012 he will be the face of hip hop. mark my words.

      4. Ain’t any doubtin that this album went way over most folks heads, especially these tweens that wanna hear wayne make doodoo jokes and talk about how much money he has.

I was born in 87 and grew up witnessing a lot of the shit he talks about on Section.80.

Most people are too simpleminded to realize the social commentary on the album, take ADHD for example. The whole track is about major pharmaceutical companies basically forcing narcotics on kids at younger and younger ages because of a made up disorder(ADHD). “you know why we crack babies? because we born in the 80s, that adhd crazy” They’re basically building a drug problem, and its obvious.

Don’t even get me started on Ronald Reagan Era. . .

      1. read what he has to say. i hate those types of rappers too, but lamar admits hes a rapper. he just wants people to know hes human first, rapper second.

    6. Don’t be mad because your not smart enough to keep up or understand Kendrick’s lyrics ..your such a fucking clown it’s sad

    7. Kendrick is the truth. His verse on Drake’s Marvin Room was incredible. I felt like I was a fly on the wall when he first met Drake….Section 80 was the best album of 2011.

      1. It might have been the album of the year in the worst year in the history of Hip Hop…I don’t think that makes it good

    8. Agreed, Kendrick Lamar is the best Rapper alive right now, and Section 80 is the best album of the new decade, it was incredible

    9. I read the article in hopes of trolling, but this dude keeps getting my approval everytime I read an interview or listen to his music. Damn you Lamar!

    10. I love Kendrick Lamar’s music and he’s definitely got me on his side as a fan and listener for life, but you guys ride his nuts hard as shit. He’s good, but damn.

    11. OMG KENDRICK YOU’RE LIKE THE JESUS OF HIP HOP. YOU’RE BETTER THAN PAC JAY AND NAS COMBINED OMG OMG SECTION.80 IS A MASTERPIECE. IT’S THE SEQUEL TO ILLMATIC THAT I LISTEN TO EVERYDAY. SHIT IT’S BETTER. I FUCKIN BLAST HOL UP WHEN I’M SHOWERING THEN I BUMP HIIPOWER WHEN I PLAY XBOX THEN RIGAMORTIS WHEN I’M JERKING OFF. OMG OMG IT’S A SHAME THIS GOES OVER SO MANY DUMB PEOPLES HEADS WHO PROBABLY LIKE WAYNE OR GUCCI OR SOMETHING OMG OMG
