Nelson Mandela, a South African activist and icon, passed away yesterday (December 5).
He was 95.
Like many emcees and others, Kendrick Lamar wrote about Nelson Mandela through social media.
“Advising all my young ones that follow me to research a small piece of Nelson Mandela Life,” Lamar wrote on Twitter. “That’s how you pay your respect.”
Following Mandela’s passing, South African President Jacob Zuma also spoke about Mandela’s legacy.
“Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father,” President Jacob Zuma said, according to cnn.com. “What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves.”
President Barack Obama also spoke about Mandela’s passing yesterday. The President of the United States also acknowledged Mandela’s achievements in his statement.
“We’ve lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth,” President Obama said in a statement. “He no longer belongs to us — he belongs to the ages.”
Mandela was a founder of an African National Congress (ANC) youth league, according to cnn.com. Mandela was also a member of the ANC and fought against apartheid, a government-imposed system that enacted racial segregation and removed economic and political opportunities from non-whites. Mandela fought against apartheid peacefully at first, but in 1961, Mandela created the military group Spear of the Nation, as per nbcnews.com.
“My people, Africans, are turning to deliberate acts of violence and of force against the government in order to persuade the government, in the only language which this government shows by its own behavior that it understands,” Mandela said during this period in time, as per cnn.com.
In 1962, Mandela was arrested and accused of treason. He spent 27 years in prison.
At his trial, Mandela reportedly gave a speech that lasted more than four hours. The speech contained information about his message and regarding his beliefs.
“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination,” he said at the trial, according to cnn.com. “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
Mandela later served as South Africa’s president.
In July 2010, Mandela spoke about how he wished to be remembered, as per cnn.com.
“I would like to be remembered not as anyone unique or special, but as part of a great team in this country that has struggled for many years, for decades and even centuries,” he said. “The greatest glory of living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall.”
Kendrick Lamar’s Twitter post can be found below.
As reported yesterday, several others have also addressed Mandela’s passing and history via social media.

Wow, Kendrick, way to turn the death of a civil rights icon, and one of the greatest men who has lived, into a condescending comment. I hate how he acts like he is smarter than his fans. Telling us to go research Nelson Mandela. He is one of the most important people of recent history, how could you expect people to not know about him?
People are aware of who Nelson Mandela is. I believe Kendrick is advocating for more in depth research.
Paris Hilton tweeted RIP Nelson Mandela and that she really loved his I have a Dream speach!!! a lot of people are just as clueless
“I believe Kendrick is advocating for more in depth research.”
What else do we need to know? Nigga went to jail, spent 27 years there, freed his people and became the president.
OP be cryin crocodile tears
people know who Mandela is, but not everybody has actually done research on him, which is what K-Dot prompts everyone to do… idiot
He said that for his younger fans that are in there teens or younger fuckin retards.
Not everybody knows the history of Nelson Mandela and what he did. It goes deeper than him going to jail and freeing his people. It’s the way he did it. Dude was intelligent and was a true rebel. He started out like a MLK trying to do peace marches but after first blood he transitioned into a Malcom X. He formed his own militia called MK and gained allies from other countries. While many saw him as a terroist. Other countries saw him as nationalist, someone who was just trying to free his people and gain equality. Nobody knows that about. There is so much more you can know about him.
Postedjust now
Paul Walkers death is way getting more coverage than Nelson Mandela’s… thats so fucked up and wrong.
yeah but at the end of the day, who’s gonna have a movie about himself? who between the two is seen as a legend? it doesn’t matter who got more coverage
That is because Nelson Mandela’s, he was what? 94, everyone knew that it was coming where Paul Walker was in his 40s and he died in a car accident making it much more surprising.

What a cheap move by K Dot. YMCMB has donated 10 million to Mandela’s family.
A lie.
Yeah, making people actually do some in-depth research on Nelson Mandela is a cheap move.
I smashed my computer on a wall when I read Gucci Mane’s tweet mourning Mandela
“All my young ones”
LOL at this nigga acting like he old or something LMAO mothafucka I’m even old enough to be your father
You must be like 50+ years old or something.
hes like 25…so i guess you’re over 40 LOL why u even on here
26.
kendrick lamar ain’t big enough to tell someone about Mandela. Nelson Mandela is known in every country by young and old. He is in the History books already. This little twat kendrick just trying to get some shine, by acting as if he has more notoriety than this Worldwide Legend.
You are an idiot.
how the flying fuck did he act like you said? stfu
KENDRICK is a smart, caring & intelligent artist – someone who REALIZES that a humble & focused person like NELSON MANDELLA dedicating his LIFE to make it a BETTER WORLD is admirable, as opposed to these fake ‘Rick Ross’, ‘MEEK rappers & ace HOOD ‘wanna bees’ poppin’ bottles, tellin’ fake ‘drug dealin’ stories & poppin’ Molly to appear ‘credible’ – TO WHOM?!
uptil I saw the draft four $5518, I have faith that…my… sister had been realie taking home money in their spare time from there pretty old laptop.. there sisters roommate has been doing this 4 less than eighteen months and by now repaid the loans on there home and bought a top of the range Lexus LS400. have a peek at this site… http://www.Fb39.com
but was good and by far the best album of 2012. So far Kendrick got 2 classics with S.80 being one of the greatest pieces of music of this decade.
just the fact niggas have to hate on an article like this proves to me that you faggots are seriously not worth living on this planet.
You people really are something else.. You’d be surprised how many people know the name of Nelson Mandela and not what he accomplished with the 95 years he lived on this earth. Kendrick is influencing this generation in the right way and ten fold what Rick Ross, Drake, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne, or any of these YMCB folk that think throwing money around is a way to pay tribute. Have any of you even seen the way this generation is growing? Through the twerkin, Miley Cyrus acts and the seemingly endless array of music with nothing better to talk about then bank accounts and women. The best way to pay tribute to a man that actually had a life well lived is to read about him and understand all that he sacrificed and gave to rid not only the injustice in his country but those around.
“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children”.
Mandela understood that. Kendrick understands that.
You self righteous assholes need to understand that and respect his intentions. Pricks.
fuck that nigga that didn’t mourn i know you still think you will go to hell….
didn’t know who he was, but thx kendrick for that tweet
kdot is doing somethjing great for this culture, I think I’ll support his albums.
hes right, kendrick is so fucking smart and good for hip hop
you are so right genoO. he is, he really is.
100 % agree with kdot, and I ain’t even big on him like that
Take Care was a great album.
Said no one ever.

come check out my new music video….search –> RIV – The Clever Pt. 3 on youtube and watch in 720/1080p HD
Take Care sold more than Kendrick’s wimpy debut.
I followed Mandela before he was released from jail. I protested tirelessly against the apartheid regime in SA. I was jailed, met with Archbishop Desmond Tutu both in USA and out of USA. But I never met Madiba himself, to my chagrin.
