Kanye West On The Grammy’s: “They Need To Stop Playing With Us”

During Beck’s acceptance speech for “Album Of The Year” at The Grammy’s last night (February 8), Kanye West followed the singer onstage in what many imagined to be a repeat of his infamous Taylor Swift remarks at the 2009 VMA’s. However, the Chicago rapper instead simply smiled and returned back to his seat.

Not long afterwards, Kanye, standing alongside his wife Kim Kardashian West, spoke with E! to address the situation.

“If The Grammy’s want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us,” Kanye West says. “We ain’t finna play with them no more. ‘Flawless’ Beyoncé video. Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it. Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.

“We as musicians have to inspire people who go to work everyday and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place,” Kanye adds. “Then they do this whole promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want a commercial advertising. No, we not playing with them no more.”

After word of Kanye’s outburst hit the Internet, Beck spoke with US Weekly at Universal Music Group’s after-party to weigh in on the situation.

“I was just so excited he was coming up,” Beck said when asked about Kanye intruding onstage. “He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?”

Asked about Kanye’s “true artistry” comments, Beck said: “You can’t please everybody, man. I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”

Kanye West Is Reportedly Executive Producing Rihanna’s Next Album

In other Kanye West-related news, HotNewHipHop is reporting that the G.O.O.D. Music artist is set to executive produce Rihanna’s still-untitled upcoming album. The reveal was reportedly made on the red carpet at last night’s awards.

    1. Beck is a multi-instrumentalist who writes all or almost all of his own songs.
What exactly are the talents of Beyonce she sings but even here voice is annoying

      Kanye = total loser

      1. Superfluous singer, dancer. The worlds greatest entertainer and a Pop cultural icon whose reach and status make her arguably the greatest female vocalist of our generation. So, there’s that.

    2. Kanye has a right to his opinion, but I am confused as to why he said this about Beck.

You think Beyonce should have won, okay… But, to insinuate Beck is not creative? Kanye should know better.

Beck literally wrote, produced and played basically every damn instrument on his album. Respect the craft, Kanye… Respect the craft.

On another note, Kanye might be the biggest bee in the BeyHive.

      1. It doesn’t matter. If it wasn’t culturally hitting it doesn’t matter. Kanye talks about shaping culture rather than individual projects.

      2. It does matter. The people that vote for the winner choose how to vote. It’s not up to Kanye. The majority ruled that Beck had AOTY. That’s all there is to it.

Him insinuating Beck isn’t creative and that he somehow lacks respect in artistry… that’s crazy.

    3. Beck’s voters were all middle-class white people who never heard any of Kanye’s work. Berr sucked my wet fart.while his mother licked my liquid butter!

      1. kanyes works wasnt nominated hes mad about jay-zs wifey not winning again… he thinks beyonce is the be all and end all of music and any award not given to her is racism

    4. Kanye needs to wrap his head around the concept that maybe the entire world doesn’t share his opinion about music.

    5. Fucking asshole! Shut the fuck up and show some respect to a real artist, not a pop star manufactured by the industry to make money… I wish someone would ruin one of Kanye or Kim’s moments by making it all about themselves instead of the artist/person winning.

    6. Guarantee he never heard Becks album. I wish he wouldn’t act like his opinion is the gospel truth. Why doesn’t he start giving out his own awards?

    7. LOL @ a guy who uses 5 to 10 co producers and ghostwriters on every song preaching to a multi-instrumentalist about artistry and talent.

But that’s none of my business…..

    8. He should have been tackled by security and escorted out of the building for ruining Beck’s moment and taking away from his accomplishment like that. He talks about having respect for artistry but this was some clown shit to pretend like he was gonna Taylor Swift him then turn around cause he only trys that shit on lil white girls.

    9. Where was Kanye the social justice warrior at last year when Kendrick was robbed by Macklemore? Beyonce already has like 20 Grammys and 50+ nominations she’ll be aight.

    10. im a nigga from brooklyn and even ive heard of beck. I dont fu*k with his music but dudes been havin hits since the 90s. And kanyes the biggest f*ggot i know for again interrupting someones moment with his antics even if this time it was a joke, it was still becks moment not kanyes. He would have never did that if it was another rapper or another male that could kick his ass. And what is his obsession with beyonce? Shes not an artist shes an entertainer who doesnt produce her music, doesnt write her songs and doesnt choreograph her dances. There is no artistry or creativity in that whatsoever, shes a pop icon with a great voice that makes cheesy music for chicks and homos. Ahh i get it now, she makes music for homos. Now it all makes sense.

    11. Kanye’s point is that urban artists continue to get shut out of the Grammy’s and I agree with him 100%. Oh they love to have the blackies perform at their show and sit in their audience, but they won’t be giving them any of their awards. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – probably the most critically acclaimed album in any genre in the past ten years – didn’t even get NOMINATED for album of the year. “Drunk in Love” by Beyonce and Jay-Z – probably the biggest, most talked about and most popular song of the year – didn’t even get NOMINATED for record of the year. And then the Beck’s, Taylor Swift’s, Adele’s, Sam Smith’s and Mumford and Sons win all the awards. Something’s wrong with that picture.

      1. do you realize how many Grammys Kanye, Jay-Z and Beyonce have between them? HHDX did a dope write up on all the great hip-hop albums that never got nominated its nothing new…

      2. whats wrogn with that picture? taylor swift, adele, sam smith and mumford and sons were all way bigger than anything beyonce or kanye did recently, the world of music is much bigger than hip-hop and r&b/pop

      3. urban artists are constantly nominated and win awards, all the urban artists you listed have won tons of grammys. beck wins one for a great album and you decide to shit your pants with your little racist undertones. hip hop fans need to stop making EVERYTHING about hip hop, it’s not the only fucking genre in america.

      4. All the new music has stolen from hip-hop with their wack rhymes and bitten slang. Whites have always and will always steal every form of black music going back to rock blues, jazz, r and b, hip-hop etc. etc. Get used to it or go to another country that is majority black or better yet demand out 40 acres and a mule (whatever that translates to today) and have a separate society. Most of the music and culture we create comes out of struggle. If they didn’t provide the struggle the music wouldn’t exist.

    12. I wonder how he would feel is someone ran up on stage during one of his 2 performances and made it all about themselves.

      1. Funny how racism is wrong unless it’s against white people. If you are perpetuating hate then you are just as guilty as any other racist hate filled person.

    13. Kanye really is a walking contradiction. True hypocrite. Respect the artistry but hold up first he gotta disrespect a true artist.

    14. beyonce has no artistry. spent her entire career changing a few words of songs which writers pen for just so she can get writers credit

    15. LOL @ This fake outrage for publicity. He obviously has no problem with the Grammy’s if he hired a babysitter, showed up with the wifey, sat front row and performed not once but twice. Not to mention the shelf full of Grammy awards he has at his home. I wonder if they failed to recognize real artistry those years when Kanye got his trophies.

      1. Beyonce’s album didn’t deserve any awards other then “Best Marketing scheme of the year”. Take away the method in which it was released and the sales and what your left with is another run of the mill female Pop album with R&B influence. She has a great voice but there is nothing special in what she does that a dozen other women don’t do.

    16. Kanye’s just trolling. It’s entertainment. Somebody’s got to do it. I think he’s smart enough to respect true artistry. He knows who Beck is. The public shouldn’t get it twisted. These people party with each other behind the scenes and laugh at how the public eats it all up. It’s Hollywood

      1. he ruined that mans moment and made it about himself. talk about selfish. i wonder how he would feel if someone did that to kim or nori when they were getting awarded for their accomplishment (LOL I KNOW)

    17. Who says Beck isn’t a true artist? Is it because he’s white? Art is subjective. Maybe Beck worked just as hard as Beyonce did….or maybe harder. Maybe he inspires people too. When did hip-hop turn into a bunch of sniveling cry babies???

      1. Beyonce needs a dozen writers for every song on her album. Beck wrote and played all his own original music. Its not even close when it comes to his the more artistic one is.

      2. I only asked you a simple question . Their is no need to WRITE IN ALL CAP’S . It makes you come across as an idiot .

For the record i’m white so you’re “TIME OF THE MONTH ESTROGEN” rant makes no sense SILLY BILLY

      3. beck came from the bottom playing folk music in the street for money. hes a true artist.. 14 instruments he can play

    18. I cant believe the Grammys did a tribute to ASAP fuckin YAMS but nothing for Guru of the almighty Gang Starr

    19. i haven’t listened to beck, so i can’t really say whether i agree or not. i doubt kanye has either. HE needs to respect artistry. beyonce makes annoying pop music that she doesn’t even write. fuck kanye i hope kim cheats on him.

    20. funny how kanye too pussy to stand up to any rappers or someone who could actually knock him out. he picks easy targets

    21. Sadly we live under a system of white supremacy where people who classify themselves as white seek to dominate and subjugate non white people.

      1. @ Bruthadee dude you all ready been exposed for apparently being an elderly fraud who replies to his own posts and just copies and pastes the same comments .

      2. His a old white man race baiting for the frills…He losses interest after a while . Pay the troll no mind he will soon get bored

    22. Tell me people. Why are the grammy’s so important to black artist. Black prominent artist like Kanye West have had more than enough time to create an event that selects nominees based off the merits what what makes a true talented black artist. Yet he’s in front of a camera talking about what the grammy’s need to do to appease black artist. Why the fuck should they care about you?! They never have so create your own award ceremony and make it bigger and mean something more than the grammy’s.

    23. Hypothesis:
Taylor Swift = white female, 75 lbs
Beck = white male, 120 lbs

Conclusion: Kanye is a fucking pussy who wouldn’t do this type of shit to a real nigga.

      1. You pigskins are easily the most despised sick filthy creatures on the planet which is why you get beheaded by man and mauled by animal.

    24. I don’t think Beyonce should have gotten the Grammys that she won, I believe that her and Jay -Z BOUGHT them instead of winning them. She has also received enough Grammys. The Grammys are about who makes real music. A song about drunk sex isn’t Grammy quality at all. What will she say to her daughter when she asks about “Drunk In Love”. Will she lie, or really tell her that “Oh, that’s what your Dad and I did and now we have you”. Chris Brown and/or Usher should have received both R&B awards, not a song about drunk sex.

Whomever decided the winners needs to look from a musician’s view (even though they should have a musical background in the first place) and ask “Which ones defy true music?” Instead of “Which ones made more money and YouTube views?” Real music is not about making money, it is about expression and the feelings that it brings. There needs to be meaning behind each piece of music that is composed, not about drunk sex.

      1. Rock and Roll, invented by black people, is slang for sex. “Rocking” and “Rolling” around in the bed sheets. That’s an entire genre, typically considered for white people, named after sex. People have been talking about sex in songs for centuries but because of the changing slang of the times you never realize it looking back.

    25. all these years of solid proof and you acrubs can only conjure up that “kanye’s a punk”….smh it’s so sad

    26. kanye told a guy who can play 14 instruments and make his own music he needs to respect real art from a person who doesnt even write her own music and all she does is sing LOLLLL

    27. So glad I don’t live in american must be the most racist place on earth no wonder the rest of the world hates you .

    28. Instead of debating the merits of Beck’s album, why not mention the fact that the Grammy’s now awards the majority of the “black/urban” categories before they even start broadcasting on live television?
