Just Blaze Names His Top 5 Emcees of All-Time

A lot of rappers and producers have been giving their Top 5 of All-Time lists of late, and Just Blaze is the latest. Just may also have the list that will have the most people up in arms. Eschewing the the usual consensus picks like Kool G. Rap, Jay-Z, and Rakim for other emcees from the same era. The New Jersey bred producer hit SOHH with his list and provided explainations.

    Beastie Boys

Beastie Boys has to be in my Top 5, as a group. And you gotta remember, one thing about the Beastie Boys is that none of them ever really had “verses”. Everything was them playing off of each other. They write collectively. It wasn’t like, “I’m gonna write my verse and then you’re gonna write your verse.” You can’t break them up. They deserve a spot on my list. So I’m gonna have to say that’s one.

    Prodigy

I would have to go with ’95 Prodigy. I loved everything about him back then. There was a point where he was the best out, in my opinion. You think back to how many great opening lines Prodigy’s had in songs. From “Shook Ones” to “Survival of the Fittest” to “Godfather Part III” to “Quiet Storm”, he was the maestro to the opening line. So I would definitely put mid-1990’s Prodigy on the list.

    The D.O.C.

D.O.C.’s gotta be in there. You gotta remember with him, there really wasn’t a West Coast vibe around his era. He was from Texas [and] formed a group with artists who were from the West Coast, but his album just felt more universal. I think what we consider these days as the “West Coast” sound was more so like the G-Funk era. Up until that point, everything that for the most part was coming out in terms of hip-hop was still different spins on it. It was like the East Coast sound was more rhymes and imitation and then D.O.C. kind of came out of nowhere, relatively unknown, from Houston, rapping the way he [did]. He’s definitely one of the greats. He put out one album and that one album still stands the test of time even to this day.

    Brother J

I’ve gotta keep it to what I listened to growing up and so I have to name Brother J from X-Clan. If you listen to a lot of those old X-Clan albums, they specialized in just jacking everybody else’s beats and rhyming on ’em. So listening to an X-Clan album felt almost like you were at a house party. It sounded like somebody was just on the mic freestyling. His rhythm, his flow, his vocal presence, the knowledge he was kicking, all those factors are important. At the time, a lot of people were trying to kick knowledge but not too many could do it like him. Whatever you listen to at 12, 13 years old, it always sticks with you for the rest of your life. Even though he was rapping over everybody else’s beats, his rhyme, his cadence, his flow, his rhyme patterns and just what he was saying in general, it’s always stuck to me over the years. I can still go back to those first two albums.

    Chuck D

My last pick would probably be Chuck D. Public Enemy’s concept and pride in black nationalism at the time was important. It was such a movement more so than anything else. He might not have had the best rhymes or flow, but his voice and his presence made you stop and listen. His voice was one of the few that actually had the ability to control the people.

What do you think of Just Blaze’s list?

      1. i can’t believe u have more of a problem with him putting cube and xzibit on there than dmx. cube’s first 4 albums and the first nwa joint are all classics.

    1. hip hop is dead like that fat b**** notorious B.I.G… yeah right just im so sick of people co signin’ old skul just 2 sound smart r u gonna tel me beastie boys r betta than slaughterhouse or chuck d’s betta than pharoah monch…ok u hav right 2 yo own opinion, well my opinion is dis u r a dumb a** ,lol

      1. You have no real sense of what hip hop is. With chuck fathering niggas there would def be no pharoah to carry it further or try to bring even a fration of what chuck D bought to hip hop

      2. did this dude really just say pharoah monch is better than chuck D???? anything you say from now on can not be taken seriously. now go sit in the corner

      3. I agree with lowprofile. Most of the pioneers can’t even see some of the rappers out TODAY. So you’re telling me the Beasie Boys are better emcees than Slaughterhouse? No.

Fuck Chuck D, he’s racist and my nigga Budden would SLAUGHTER him LYRICALLY and MUSICALLY.

      4. mighty pharoahe is one of the most complex lyricists of all time. what he does technically is astounding also factoring in that he has pretty bad asthma. yes he was inspired by folks like chuck d but have u ever heard of the student surpassing the teacher…pharoahe monch is top 5 dead or alive imo

      5. you are an IDIOT!!!! No Chuck D = No Pharoah periOD!! You youngin’s dont really know whats going on. Do you homework! Slaughterhouse?? hahaha…Come on ..D.I.T.C shit. OC & Lord Finesse would shit on them! Until Slaughterhouse comes out with a classic, theyre just another group to me.

    2. stop callin these lists “Greatest of All-Time…” these end up being a “Favorites” list anyway. Premo’s wack additions to the “Top 25 Albums”, Blaze’s “95 Prodigy”? what the F is that?

    3. I love his list !! I love the fact he had originality to his list and not
just went with the same ol’ same ol’ to get props. I love the fact he didn’t just kiss ass to the ones he worked with in the past. He really put some thought into it. His list shows there are a huge amount of emcee’s that don’t get recognition just because….

      1. yes sir! And i do have to agree with his Beastie boys comment. And he hit it rite onthe spot with DOC…Dude almum is /was universal.

    4. Bad journalism. It’s a sohh.com article and a lot of the names mentioned are in a “Hall of Fame” list, so the people they’ve been interviewing aren’t allowed to name certain rappers. Tupac, Big Daddy Kane, Eminem, Jay-Z, Kool G Rap, KRS-One, Nas, Biggie, Rakim and Scarface weren’t allowed to be mentioned.

      1. thanks for clarifying. everyone should read this post. This is why hiphopdx is not in my top 5 go-to sites for accurate news and music.

    5. Just Blaze’s Top 5 “Emcees”, not “rapper”, is “Emcees” & I think is ok minus Prodigy & Brother J. Both are better in group. Mobb Deep & X-Clan.

      My Top 10 HH Groups:

      Wu-Tang Clan
      Run-DMC
      Mobb Deep
      Outkast
      X-Clan
      NWA
      UGK
      Triple Six (Three 6 Mafia)
      Beastie Boys
      Slaghterhouse

      1. Slaughterhouse in there and The Roots arent? I mean i understand that this is in you opinion, but The Roots have definitely got to be one of the most original hip hop group ever with the live music and questlove’s amazing production. Im not even gonna start on Black Thought. that guys just a lyrical genius.

      2. BDP,EDMP, The orignal symphony with big daddy kane, DITC, the juice crew, M.I.C, Blackstar I dont know if duos count but best groups imo in no real order

        as for mcs
        mf doom
        percee p
        jadakiss
        mos def
        royce da 59

    6. Its hard to just name 5 like that. Here’s my attempt.

      Favorite 5 (no order):
      – Black Thought (of the legendary roots crew)
      – Nas
      – GZA
      – Guru
      – Mos Def

Other slept-on artistes that are great:
      – Brother Ali
      – Inspectah Deck
      – P.O.S.
      – RA Scion
      – Slug of Atmosphere
      – RA the Rugged Man
      – Sage Francis
      – Rakaa Iriscisnce
      – Surreal

    7. Last time i commented on a producers top something list it was that controversial premo one.. And i waas defending premos list becausr thats his list.. Its an individual taste.. And premo being premo.. Did his thing to deserve the attention people give to his top list

This is why i give props to just on this
Lets jus celebrate the individuality of hip hop with this one
I love the fact that he didnt go with the usual names as the headline suggests.. Especially considering he was one of jays secret weapons throughout the golden era of the roc
Nowadays its almost taboo to put out a list of ur favorite artists without saying the expected names
You want to be really hip hop keep that shit 100 and say what u feel
The best partabout this is when he mentioned “i gotta keep it to music i grew up with” that right jus tells u that this hip hop shit aint a for now thing u really take it seriously then youre gonna include ur whole life into the mix when discussing abt it
And not holding back to compromise with the general idea now

Im so high.. I had to say shit

      1. Damn, thats the open-minded hip hop fan i like 2 hear.Hip hop culture is made for guys like urs. keep it up son, strong opinion always(and keep smokin that shit 😉

    8. When you say shit like “you don’t know shit”.. you’re saying that there is right or wrong answers to questions like, “who is in your top 5″… which means YOUR top 5 is made up of guys who you were told are supposed to be there… which makes you a follower.. which makes you a LAME… lol gotta love hip hop nerds

non of Blazes top 5 would make my top 100 but big up to him for being honest!

      1. I totally agree man. It’s suppose to be your top 5. Canibus is in my top 5 because he kicks complex lyrics that make you think. No other emcee has ever had me doing searches on things like Non linear optics or shit like that. But I also know that most main stream music fans don’t wanna have to think about what an artist is talking about, so most people won’t like it. BUT I DO. So that’s all that matters. Be original. Like who you like and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

    9. Props to Just Blaze for not having the standard generic Nas/Jay/Big/Tupac/Rakim top 5. I’m also a Brother J fan. Didn’t really appreciate X-Clan until a few years ago, but J was dope. His rhymes with Professor X’s speaking were great.

I had to laugh at Just picking a single year out of Prodigy’s career. P was dope from ’95-’99. After that, he was trash.

      1. ^ if you wanna talk about the most underrated artiste, id definitely go with AZ.the man has been slept on since forever. one of the greats that i grew up listening to.

    10. I respect Blaze for making a personal Top 5…that’s what matter’s most…I have no qualms with 95 Prodigy…From 95-99 P-Double was definitely Top 5!

    11. the whole article / list is taken out of context. This was a story on SOHH the other day in which the ‘rules’ are you can’t pick Nas, Big, Pac, Jay, Kane, Rakim, KRS, GRap, etc.

      get your shit straight DX.

    12. Def’ly the “out the box, politically ‘in’correct list;” BUT I would not debate on this ensemble. Def’ly respectable…good stuff!

      Divine, PEACE!

    13. I cant name a top 5. I can name 5 of my favorites though.

      -Nas
      -Tech N9NE
      -Royce da 5′ 9
      -Eminem
      -Grieves

      1. big ups for throwing up Greives. We havnt heard alot from him yet but hes definitly a great artiste and with budo as he’s dj he set.

    14. my top10
      1.Eminem
      2.Royce da 5’9
      3.Tech N9ne
      4.Crooked I
      5.Immortal
      6.Joe Budden
      7.Vinnie Paz
      8.Joell Ortiz
      9.Bishop Lemont
      10.Elzhi

…they are the best lyricists ever…no one can touch them

      1. Nas, Black Thought, Common, Talib Kweli, BIG, Canibus, etc. are better lyricists then all those guys you named fool

      2. Black Thought,Canibus maybe…but Common,Talib or Nas…no way…Nas lost his skills…he used to be one of my fav..but i guess money changes ppl…since he stated that a Rick ROss song made his top5 ever…fuck him..

      1. your an idiot if this was serious. there is no way in any shape or form is wu better than everyone whos ever rapped. not to mention rza isnt even the best rapper in wu

    15. Mid-90’s Prodigy was as ill as anyone. Specially when he was featured on other artist’s tracks…and definitely his opening lines were 2nd to none. “I put my lifetime in between the paper’s lines”….

    16. Very nice list. Its great to see someone have a list were they are being honest and not putting what everyone expects to see. If read another top 5 emcees list that has more than two of the following names, Pac, Biggie, Nas, and jay-Z, i think I may scream.

    17. I respect putting Prodigy (mid 90’s Prodigy) on the list, I always include him on that list….spittin some sick shit back i those days!!!

      1. no way. longevity is a part of being a legend. thats something he never had. he had a few dope years and that was it. hes not like nas putting out 10 platinum albums or anything like that

      2. Yeah, but prodigy has probably more shit out than biggie…

If biggie is a legit choice for top 5 doa, w/ just about 3 albums, then anyone w/ at least 3 dope albums is up for the title. prodigy has achieved that.

    18. these are like the in the top 60 at best
      Prodigy? The Doc?
Please this list is only meant to bring attention and unjustified respect to rappers that no one else would even mention
Chuck d is the only deserved rapper despite him not being a favorite
Beastie boys is a group of white experimental rock hippies that only got respect because of their race, experimental skills and popularity-nothing deserving of a hip-hop top fifty list(probably a pop-rock shit list)Please you telling me you can’t think of a black rapper ten-times more deserving a top five spot over these guys?
The most bullshit top five list ever!

      1. I think you are underestimating the D.O.C. a little bit. Even though he has only one album, it’s a classic and it’s pretty obvious dude can spit. Maybe if he had put out more albums, you might not have any issues with him being a top five emcee. But then again, he was written for other people. I don’t know if you count that, though.

      2. Get off your high horse. Anyone that knows anything about hip hop has mad respect for what the Beasties have done. Not only are the original def jam recording artists but they are legit emcees. Who cares if they are white? Who cares if they are jewish? Who cares if an emcee is black? IF you care about hip hop it should be nothing more than the music and Blaze makes an excellent point. They are not just emcees, they don’t spit and verse and pass the mic, they pass it around and build off of eachother. They write together as a cohesive group. If you cannot accept the fact that they are one of the best hip hop groups of all time you are not listening to the music and you are letting you own preconceptions blind you from seeing what they truly are. For the interest of full disclosure, I am white, but that has nothing to do with my interest in their music. For the most part, I find a lot of white emcees to be corny. Not because they are white, but because they are corny. All right, I’m done.

      3. @backpacker. The D.O.C. technically has two albums, his second came out after his car accident, “Helter Skelter”. But I agree with you. Also “Eazy Duz It” Straight outta Compton” “The Chronic” “2001” wouldn’t be anything if it weren’t for the fact that The D.O.C. write on most things on those albums plus a bunch more. DX had a two part interview this past month with The D.O.C. discussing that. I recommend reading it. Its a really interesting article.

    19. the whole article / list is taken out of context. This was a story on SOHH the other day in which the ‘rules’ are you can’t pick Nas, Big, Pac, Jay, Kane, Rakim, KRS, GRap, etc.

      get your shit straight DX

    20. hmm… naming a top 5 doesn’t make much sense unless your gonna name a top 5 of artistes with similar styles. Just throwning around names doesn’t make any sense. But i must say that I saw too many ‘lists’ without the mention of Black Thought, one of greatest lyricists imo. haha

Im also tried of all the people riding on eminem, saying hes the greatest or the greatest white rapper of all time. Please. there are ALOT more great if not better white artistes out there, but some people just dont seen them cause their blinded by the watered down stuff that dominated mainstream hip hop. [brother ali, slug, slaine to mention few)

What i like about hiphopDX is that it covers all realms of hip hop. From the mainstream to the beautiful underground.

      Recognize the Real.

    21. Funny to see how people would hate on another persons opinion. Meanwhile these amateur critics below & above don’t live and breath hip-hop day in and day out.

I have my own opinions, but glad to see somebody just be honest and original with their list.

      1. so true man. its just an opinion. and people start freakin out when they dont see pac/big/rakim/nas/kool g. he was definitely original and gave good reasons too

      2. Yeah and they probably don’t even know jay’s shit as well as just does. I mean jb helped to make jay great, so him not putting him on his top 5 goes to show.

    22. Public Enemy were an integeral group durin’ hip-hop’s goldern period, but I was feelin’ them more for the Bomb Squard production and Teminator X’s turntablism, rather than Chuck’s rhymes. Dude’s lyrics were too complex for me to comprehend as a 12-year-old, and the didactic nature of the music meant it was left to Flav’s accessibility to get their message across, if only by osmosis. I love Mobb, but I feel Hav was the better emcee, he’s also over-looked as a produce. Beastie Boys are cool, but their longevity is down to them appealin’ to a non- hip-hop demographic -i.e. Middle America. To the East, Blackwards is a superb LP, but I was still more into 3rd Bass than X-Clan, not for PC reasons though, but because they had a quirky sense of humour.

      1. Ayo that’s probably the best list I seen. Em,Jay,Nas are the top tier any order. Pac lacks the technical skill, and Big not enough material, so they go into duel 4 spot. Then five is a tie between Wu-Tang,Outkast, Black Star

    23. that was one pretty bad top 5 list, beastie boys should be in best groups, not best indivudal mc, chuck d is the closest to the top 5 in that group, my list is

      1- Rakim
      2- Nas
      3- Kool G Rap
      4- Eminem
      5- KRS-ONE
      6- Tupac
      7- Big Daddy Kane
      8- Biggie
      9- Jay-Z
      10- Slick Rick
      11- Chuck D

      1. its not bad…its original…u didnt even hav to write ur list…all u needed to say is “its the cliche you think it is.” i bet those guys arent ur true top 10. but if it is ur probably missin out on tons of great music…FREE YOUR CLOSED MIND sir

    24. Wow that’s bad.
      1. Nas
      2. Rakim
      3. Biggie
      4. Kool G Rap
      5. Black Thought
      6. KRS-One
      7. Tupac
      8. Eminem
      9. Jay-Z
      10. Talib Kweli

      1. and its bad because… oh rite he didnt have all the cliches you do…he was original and its a personal list. he didnt make it to please you closed minded hip hop fans. its HIS favourites

    25. who cares or gives a whoot what Just thinks? SMH… what’s sad today is that people need to learn to keep things to themselves now a days…there’s too many people all of a sudden coming out of the wood works and arrogantly speaking their minds all of a sudden thinking that what they say and feel matters and is the most important and you should follow their lead. You got weak people even speaking their minds like what they say is golden and the shit is getting out of hand. At the end of the day it’s Just’s list. Doesn’t mean you have to follow and toot to his horn. And who cares less about anybody’s top 5 because 9 times of 10 it won’t be legit due to the fact that there’s over at least 20 or 25 great rappers that could easily hit the top 5 position so it’ll be extremely hard to make a top 5 when there were so many great rappers that did amazing things.

      1. damn son you sound tight,,,,its called the best mc list,,,,not best rapper list,,,shit anybody can rap,,,but can you mc?,,,,there is a difference

    26. Whats with all this Slaughterhouse dick riding…Until they come with a CLASSIC. Theyre just another group to me…and for you backpackers – I’m talking about a TRUE Classic! not just a hot track! Just statement on Beastie Boys was rite…Their 1st 3 CD’s were solid albums. Check your Head is a personal fav of mine…So Whatcha Want is CLASSIC! And he is 100% correct on his DOC comment. Thats a “universal” sounding CD. he’s top 10 in my book. and while everyone else is at it heres my top 5.

Nas – Best poet / lyricist EVER!
KRS – The blastmaster can outshine anyone ona a track! even to this day.
Cube – circa 88-93..cant nobody fuck with him.
Big Pun – Dude RAPED tracks. Shit he made nice beats sound shitty! His wordplay was second to none and his breath control…WOW!
Ghostface – Only MC now still dropping SOLID albums on a consistant basis. Plus dude puts so much emotion into his music. His Ghostdeini : Wizard of Poetry was one of his best…but only older heads understand that album. you young punks think your too hard for that CD.hahaha…..Oh yeah…It MY top 5 BITCHES!

      1. the first Slaughterhouse album is a classic asshole…give it a 10 years…and u ll see that they made history….like “Nastradamus” or “MM LP” or Wu’s “36 chambers”…

      2. hahaha Loosen your bra straaaa aahh i mean your backpack strap faggot!! You young kids think everything nowadays is a classic. ..And Nastradamus a classic?! WOW! You need to do your homework kid.

    27. It is his opinion…but definitely dont agree with anyone on the list except for Chuck D… But even with that dude should have done a top 10 or 15 throwin names out like that.. or it shouldnt have been an all-time list…

    28. big daddy kane is the best ever. Then Pun, and Kool G. Followed by Rakim.
Listen to Terra nya era, and Unda presha by kane and you will know why

    29. 1.Jay-Z
      2.Nas
      3.Em
(Any order those are the top tier MC’s)
      4.Big and Pac
(Pac lacks the technical skill,Big had
      2cds, not enough material.)
      5.Outkast,Wu-Tang,Blackstar.
      6.Lupe Fiasco
      7.Black Thought
      8.Rakim
9.Elzhi(Maybe the best technical MC, needs
      more material)

      10.Jay Electronica

      Thats my best MC list
Honorable Mention: Krs-One, Kool G Rap

    30. dope list, its legit compared to many peoples. I think a lot of people overlook beasties and chuck d, but they definitely deserve to be considered. prodigy was ill in 95, he is definitely top 25 to me.

    31. yeah i saw the article….media will do anything for attention! they could not use a list of hall of fame rappers, so thats how he came up with his list….DX please don’t lose your credibility!!

    32. top 5 MC’s in no order…….krs one ,busta rhymes, eminem, guru, nas other contenders…….biggie, pac, raekwon, ghostface, rakim, masta ace, prodigy……fuck this i could go on for hours you get the point

      1. Let me tell you something about Tupac Amaru Shakur. He might not have twisted word or had magnificent wordplay, but dammitt he was a lyricist and very very real. Ain’t nobody had the balls to say half the shit that he said and I ain’t even talking about his disses, I’m tired of people saying 2pac was overrated. He took on Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Mobb Deep and many others pretty much by himself while they all were hot except maybe Jay-Z and nobody except Prodigy and Havoc really said shit or could fuck with him. Shed so many tears was lyrical so was most of the songs he had his words were like super glue and will not be forgotten. Say whatever you want 2pac is not overrated period.

      2. ^^^ ive never been a pac fan. I do like a few of his songs. I just think his beat selection could have been alot better. A lot of his beats bore me to death. And im a head that needs a good beat to compliment good lyrics. My fav pac song is I get Around. That beat was fucking NICE! Shock G should have provided him with more heat like that. ..Just my opinion.

    33. to everybody on here that commented please keep in mind it is call a top 5 best mc’s,,,,,eemcee,,,,is the primary word a lot of these dudes are rappers they put rhymes together,,,,,,dougie fresh is a eemcee,,,,any body that can move a crowd,,and constantly tour without new music is a eemcee,,,,master of the ceremony,,,,,,tear the house down,,,without spitting a hundred fucking bars of nonsense,,,if you throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care,,,an say hooooo!!!! then you are experiencing a eemceee,,,,,a eemcee will make you enjoy yourself at the show,,an eemcee will have a show put together,,,,not a hundred heads on the stage,,,,there aren’t many eemcees left,,,,better enjoy the few that are left,,,,,cause hip hop is suffering from missed information,,,

    34. Smart move on Just Blaze’s part. This list makes me think he didn’t want to cause any friction with artists he works or could potentionally work with

    35. Here are my lists not that anyone cares lol. I put my top 5 based on recent work too. Notice that there is only one constant thats why I put him at my top 5 all time. Show some hate please!

my top 5 of all time

      1)Ghost
      2)Nas
      3)Scarface
      4)Big L
      5)Black Thought

      Top 5 of past decade:

      1)Joell
      2)Ghost
      3)Andre 3000
      4)Elzhi
      5)Phonte

      Top 5 groups

      1)Wu
      2)Slum village
      3)Outkast
      4)Little Brother
      5)Geto Boys

      1. Yea no Biggie cause those other artists did more for me i guess. I felt like the group list was hardest to make. The roots, heltah skeltah, dogg pound, mobb deep and even the hot boyz got some serious consideration too

    36. Just put the Hieroglyphics crew right there and there’s your top mc’s, any generation. No one was born to rhyme like these kats.Always fluid they can make a song, teach, party, battle, they can do it all without sounding gimmicky. I like Blaze’s list though especially Brother J.

    37. Any list without Biggie, or Rakim for all time best is just that, alist. Heres my Top FIVE of all time: 1)BIGGIE 2)Rakim 3)Chuck D 4)KRS1 5)LL Cool J.- Top FIVE Groups: 1)RUN-DMC 2)PUBLIC ENEMY 3)Tribe Called Quest 4)Brand Nubian 5)Outkast.- Top FIVE MC’s right now 1)Fabolous 2)Joell Ortiz 3)Jadakiss 4)EM 5)Kanya. That my word son!!!

    38. 100% agree with the Prodigy pick.. he is my GOAT.. listen to the infamous album and hell on earth and tell me that theres another rapper as grimy as him.

    39. I think that Just has an outstanding list. No real expectation, nothing to predictable, just his own top 5. And I can relate, because actually have Chuck D and the D.O.C. in my top 5 too.

That’s the point of this anyway; it’s HIS top 5.

    40. Wow!!! I have always thought of Just Blaze as more commercial than the names he dropped for his list. I respect his list but since evrybody is going to do one heres mine.

    45. As a hip-hop entity (group, duo or solo) there is no doubt no one can touch Wu-Tang Clan. With their hardcore as hell style and still they were mad successful.Of all those old time cats they are still the most relevant.

    57. This is a very good list . I mean everyone knows Rakim ,Kool G Rap, Jay z , Nas are in the top of all time . Its good to see another take on it and bring some other mc’s to light who are greats such as the ones he mentions

    58. finally somebody gets off they bullsh*t wagon an recognizes the Beasties…….. an talk about SOLID ALBUMS THROUGH AN THROUGH – AND – these dudes showed range that most rappers still wish they had…….. dare I mention the philanthropy work?

Guess the accolade had to come from a well versed hip-hop person like Blaze – cuz it sure doesn’t get uttered enough in those back alley “who’s ya top 5” stupid discussions you have with ya loser ass friends – LoL

    59. WORD OF GOD

      The Top Tier of Hip-Hop:
      1. Jay-Z (motherfucker has 11 platinum albums in 13 years, 15 if you count collabs, at LEAST 6 of them were undeniable classics, every single rapper spittin today pays homage to Hov, you can’t argue against dis nigga)
      2. Notorious
      3. Tupac
      4. Em
      5. Nasir

      Honorable Mention in no order:
Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, KRS, Andre 3K, Talib, Cool J, Big Pun, Black Thought, Kool G Rap, Snoop, Kanye

      1. how u goin to not put pack at the top not only did that man distroy biggie in hit em up he droped way more hit and albums then that nigga ?!?!?

      2. thats a good point, and you could very well make the argument to put pac over biggie cuz he only dropped 2 albums. both of them had far-reaching impact. i chose to notorious as my number 2 cuz he had a much dirtier flow and could tell a story like no one else. its a close call. neither of them have an argument over jay though. hov is dat nigga.

    60. 1.PAC 2.EmShady 3.OutKast 4.Nas 5.CWallace 6.Jay 7.IceCube 8.Rakim
      9.e-40 10.BigL CLOSE_CALLS!! D.O.C. RedMan UGK LudaCris T.I.
TheList changes everyday tho!! I bet I forgetted someone.

      Free SioneKaho!!

    61. Just Blaze is getting closer and closer to Dilla with every beat he makes. Dude is best producer out right now. He can make huge hits for T.I. and em and make underground classics with joell and Saigon.

    62. killa mike, andre 3000, scarface, Z-Ro, and ice cube (old ice cube befo he strtd makin wack ass movies) OH n no specific order. n dis is MINE so fuck you if u dont like it.

      1. so what if hes makin kid movies hes 41yrs old n gt family its not like hes sellin out the westcoast like dr dre with his new pop tunes, his new album i am the west was sick as well so was his 2008 1

    63. Dope list, especially with his explainations. I agree w/his Chuck D comment too. Prodigy is STILL in my top 10 today though.

    64. My list (groups, duos & solo artists all mixed in here):

      1.Wu-Tang Clan
      2.Mobb Deep

      13.2PAC
      14-16.Killah Priest, Brand Nubian, NWA
17-20.Masta Ace, Kanye West, Vinnie Paz

These are the hip-hop acts that I like the most. It’s just my opinion and I know that influential artists like Biggie, Run DMC, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest aren’t on the list.

    65. Damn, can’t Just have his own opinion!? Some of you seem upset that he didn’t present the typical/cliche list of rappers considered the GOAT.

Prodigy hasn’t been the same for a while.

    66. Fuck all eastcoast dick riders ………..smfh RAS KASS!!! ACEYALONE!!! 67. I like how everybody wants to leave their own top 5 list, instead of giving their opinion on the article about Blaze’s list lol

    68. wow the first time beasties are on a list and its just blaze? now everyones going to be on the beasties dicks?
