Vince Staples has received a lot of praise over the past few years, mostly for his consistency and ability to reflect on the struggles of where he’s from.
Recently speaking with HipHopDX, Julian Petty, transactional attorney for Staples’ described the California emcee’s work ethic.
“He speaks the truth, he speaks his mind, he lives those words, he’s extremely talented and very, very dedicated,” he said via a segment of today’s (July 21) DX Daily. “I’m just happy to be on his team. He’s always thanking me for closing a deal and making sure he’s protected and I’m thanking him I’m like, ‘Dude, I feel like I’m part of Illmatic.'”
Petty also called Vince Staples’ latest album release the pinnacle of projects that have come out of his hometown.
“[Summertime ’06] is Long Beach’s Illmatic, I’m telling you!” he said.

lol Everyone wants to compare these wack new rappers albums to illmatic. What’s up with this? First Kendrick’s trash, now this.
I dont know what the fuck you listen to, probably corny shit like Hopsin, but Kendrick and Vince are some of the modern day era of hip hop’s best rappers
Weirdo rappers are the rage now a days.
Ehh, I wouldn’t go that far, but Vince’s album is indeed dope.
It’s not that good, but it’s a dope release though.
“Illmatic” is so fucking overrated, especially from a lyrical standpoint.
Crystal clear example of groupthink.
“It Was Written” is so much better, it’s ridiculous.
That’s your opinion, but many regard Illmatic as Nas’ best work so its not groupthink, its just great music being appreciated.
No, it’s not over rated you 15 year old f*ggot. Just be honest and say you don’t like the beats and are conditioned to like pop sounding beats and hooks. Whenever you idiots say “It Was Written was better”, you’re actually saying “I’m too young to understand Illmatic, and I’m going to say It Was Written is better because other 15-25 year olds regurgitate that online, and my credibility won’t be shot if I name drop another 90’s Nas album” That is one of the most copied statements on the internet. Most of you haven’t even heard either album or tried to “get” it. It Was Written is not more lyrical than Illmatic, but it is more commercial and modern sounding, which is why it appeals to you fake hiphop fans.( At least the ones who listed to the fucking album)
I’ve heard “Illmatic” countless times and it’s full of pretty straight-forward reflections of his surroundings. So what is there not to get, you butthurt “Illmatic” stan? Your rebuttal is weak and your lack of arguments speaks for itself, it is typical for guys like you who have heard of “Illmatic’s” mythical greatness, ran with it and dismissed Nas’ other work off that alone. If you like “Illmatic” more, that’s fine but don’t go off against everybody who doesn’t share your view about it. Like I said, prefer what you want but if you really can’t hear Nas’ HUGE lyrical growth on IWW, your credibility is shot. Narrating, rhyming, his choice of words, vocabulary, wordplay, reflections, even staying on topic for a whole verse, he improved in every category as a writer, as I’ve mentioned beforehand, the difference is ridiculous.
@ conflict. u just outed urself as a child who doesnt know crap about this hiphop shit. u can prefer whatever album you want -thats fine- but illmatic is heralded becuase of its great influence. when that album dropped, it changed hiphop and hieghtened the level of lyrical complexity necessary for a great album. After that album, everyone was trying to elevate their lyrics to emulate Nas. Its safe to say that Jay-Z and a whole host of popular MCs would have never sounded the same if Illmatic never dropped. It changed the art-form forever. “It was Written” was a good album but for many, it was the sell-out album – much easier to digest and almost pop/phony in comparison. Its influence was much less powerful. Biggie Smalls was already credited for the “It was Written” style
No, I’ve not and I’m tired of the same empty phrases repeated over and over. Nobody can say what is there about the lyrics on Illmatic that makes them hard to digest or complex because they aren’t. People acting like Nas was in some DOOM shit in there with countless pop culture references etc.
“I Gave You Power” destroys “N.Y. State Of Mind” and everything that follows with ease.
It’s the same with “Reasonable Doubt”, the wit, the wordplay, the metaphors, the depth of describing the mindstate of a hustler, it is MUCH superior lyrically to the often freestyle-esque incoherent rhyming for the sake of rhyming found on “Illmatic”.
Illmatic n it was written are both great nas albums so I see no argument here, just admit u a nas loving ass
Foku Me and Cher Lloyd are the best rappers alive.
So Summertime 06 is the Long Beach’s Illmatic? It must be hot trash then.
FOH STUPID NIGGA….
SO YOU JUST DISMAY SNOOPS DOGGYSTYLE LIKE HE ISNT VINCE STAPLES ILLEGITIMATE FATHER.
YOUR NOT A DOCTOR. BUT YOU PLAY ONE ON THE INTERNET……
Illmatic is trash. I’ve heard better Juelz Santana verses.
Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle is definitely better than Summertime 06 and it is obviously from Long Beach. Norf Norf on Summertime 06 is a fucking banger though
