Jelly Roll has had plenty of chances to meet celebrities over his decade-plus in the Hip Hop and country worlds, but he recently shared one notable opportunity he turned down last year: to get a pic with Diddy.

On the latest episode of the podcast CANCELLED with Tana Mongeau, Jelly Roll (who was there with his wife, Alyssa “BunnieXO” DeFord) told hosts Mongeau and Brooke Schofield the story.

“I did [Jimmy] Kimmel [Live!] the day Diddy did Kimmel,” he began, referring to an episode of the late night show that aired on October 30 of last year.

“This is the first time in my career, ever, where they said, ‘Do you want to meet such-and-such?’” he continued. “And I said, ‘Yeah,’ and I started walking that way.

“And as I was getting down the hallway — this is a true story — I said, ‘Nah,’ and went and got back in the car… When we were walking, I was like, I don’t know. Very seldom does things rub me in a way where I was like, ‘I don’t even know if that’s a picture I want.’”

The spur-of-the-moment decision, Jelly Roll implied, is something he’s now grateful for following the string of lawsuits against — and a federal investigation into — the Bad Boy mogul.

In addition to appearing on podcasts, Jelly Roll has, of course, been busy with music lately. Just last month, he teamed up with Joyner Lucas for a new single called “Best for Me” about the dangers of drug abuse.

The rapper and country star came together for a poignant song which directly addresses how drug addiction can ruin lives, with Joyner taking on the point of view as a friend of someone with a drug habit.

On the track, Lucas raps: “I never thought I’d see the day that you let addiction ruin your life/ Everyone callin’ that shit a disease and you makin’ feel like you in the right/ But I hate the fact that you really be usin’ that as an excuse to do what you like.”

He also spits: “I hope you look in the mirror and see all the things I been seein’ in you/ Hope your reflection’ll send you a message and show you this shit is much deeper than you/ If you don’t believe in yourself, then you’ll never believe in somebody believin’ in you.”

On the second verse, Joyner Lucas then spits from the perspective of the addict.

And how you gon’ tell me addiction’s not a disease? Fuck do you mean?/ If it’s not a disease, then why has it gotten to me? It’s not what it seems/ But you always be makin’ me feel like the problem’s me/ I’m not gonna be who you want me to be, let God decide it for me/ And speakin’ of God, how the fuck you know all of the plan’s He’s gotten for me?” he raps.
