Jay-Z’s “Magna Carta Holy Grail” Won’t Go Platinum Before It Drops

Jay-Z’s next album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, will be available to a million Samsung users for free but the album may not immediately qualify for platinum certification. This news comes after Jay-Z announced his partnership with Samsung and questioned whether going platinum before releasing the album was an option.

Billboard currently does not recognize bulk sales which are then given for free. Instead, they count sales from retailers that buy in bulk with the intention of selling. Retailers must also purchase the albums for at least a third of the project’s Suggested Retail Price, or SRP. It is currently known that Samsung purchased Jay’s album for $5 per unit. However, the project’s SRP is not known as of yet.

There is another issue with Jay being certified platinum before the album drops. According to MTV’s report, RIAA certification is only available after 30 days from the project’s release date. Therefore, Jigga will have to wait for 30 days after releasing Magna Carta Holy Grail before knowing what plaques he can get.

Jay wondered about this on Monday in a rare Twitter update for fans.

Jay’s Magna Carta Holy Grail follows last year’s Watch the Throne with Kanye West. That album reached platinum status. Two of Jigga’s last three solo efforts, The Blueprint 3 and Kingdom Come, sold over two million each, earning more plaques for Hov. One album in between, American Gangster, only went platinum. All of Jay’s previous releases reached either platinum or multi-platinum plaques with his highest seller being 1998’s Vol. 2…Hardknock Life, which went five times platinum.

    1. Shame camel joe has to cheat to win in sales. I’m looking forward to seeing what his REAL, unassisted, sales numbers are. My guess is around 80K. I’m not impressed.

      1. He cheated by taking Samsung’s $5 million. Give me a break. It’s a shame you actually put your guess of 80k down. It just showed everyone how foolish you are.

      2. 80k? im no jay fan but thats ridiculous. Jay is a brand. he will always do a MINIMUM of 200k first week.

    2. Man, Jay doesn’t deserve to go platinum off this because he didn’t sell any fucking records! This is way beyond steroids, this is like starting the game with 50 free points. We argue about whether or not people are sell-outs, this dude LITERALLY sold out by accepting $5 million from Samsung in order to use his music to advertise their shit. But still people will call me a hater for this and try and give him a pass.

      1. u sir are a clown that doesnt have a clue about business! hip hop isnt selling so the marketing genius that Jay is has marketed himself platinum without even delivering the album yet!! Musicians endorse all sorts of products that dont help them sell records…but Jay Z just did!

      2. @anonymous, u sir are the clown for calling assassin221 a clown for disagreeing with this. who are u to have any authority. it was a clever move but it wasn’t fair and he did for his ego. point blank. jay-z is a well known egomaniac. once again, very clever move but he did sell himself out for egoistical reasons. think about it, why would he need to have samsung buy 1 million copies of his album? just to create a spectacle. this is a classic 48 laws of power move

      3. Haha, you think Jay is the only rap artist to sell out? I guess you have not seen a rap video in the last three years, because they are always getting companies to do product placements. Most times these companies are the reasons artists get additional funding for their videos. Learn about business before you think someone is selling out. And last I remember the point of a job is to make money, not end up poor.

      1. rules last album hasnt even gone wood yet, less than 7000 copies in over a year! pain is love 2 certified stale bread

    3. you’ll like this site more if you stay out of the comment section. it’s 90% nerds spreading hate. internerds (see what i did?)

    4. I hope everyone understands that music artists rarely make $5 on every album they sell. He “LITERALLY sold out” according to the guy below me. Pretty funny. It’d be like getting a raise at your job and turning it down….cuz you don’t want to be a sell out…..

      1. Well that depends. If they offer me a raise but in return I have to plaster their logo on the side of my car, I might have to turn that down. Or maybe I’d take it if the raise was big enough, but I’d be a sell-out either way.

      2. ^^: sounds like a company car. I’ll take it. You and your thirsty lookin’ chucks can watch me from the sidewalk in front of your mom’s place “selling out” while driving to my job to get that paycheck. I’ll be dat.

    5. Billboard has nothing to do with counting sales or certifying albums. All it does is publish charts based on the sales tabulated by Soundscan. RIAA does audits and awards certifications when the record labels pay for them.

    6. Jay Z and a company he’s in business with buying his own music, same thing he been doin since the 90’s nothing to see here

    7. FUCK THIS ILLUMINATI CAMEL PEOPLE USING MONEY GRABBING PEICE OF SHIT FUCK JAY Z. THE FACT THAT YOU DUMB BLACK PEOPLE IDOLIZE THIS FREE MASON AND THAT NO TALENT ILLUMINATI BITCH BEYONCE IS ATTROCIOUS. ALL THE YOUNG WHITE GIRLS IDOLIZE THE BITCH TAYLOR SWIFT ALL BLACK GIRLS IDOLIZE THAT BITCH BEYONCE WHAT A FUCKING JOKE. NO WONDER THESE LITTLE GIRLS GROW UP TO BECOME SLUTS.

    8. The man is busy. Eating well. Beyonc.
      Sell-out? No. A shrewd business man…
create a new avenue to get paid for his music? Genius.

    9. so wait, it says the sales WILL COUNT if the album is priced at least 1/3rd of the suggested retail price. So as long as its 14.99 or less he’s platinum HHDX. The sales WILL COUNT PEOPLE. #Genius

      1. Why should the sales count? You think he played the album for the president of Samsung, and the dude just liked it so much he had to buy a million copies to distribute to his customers? Hell no, this is a business deal, pure and simple. Not that sales and numbers are the most important thing anyway. But the only reason they DO matter is because they signify how many people liked your shit enough to pay for it. Jay just worked out a mutually beneficial financial arrangement with a big company, art and music had nothing to do with it. I bet most people on here don’t think corporations should be allowed to contribute to political campaigns because they’re not people. So why should they count as people when it comes to album sales?

      2. @Assassin221 – Each individual Person has to download the album there self. Either way, a million copies of an album sold is a million copies of an album sold. Period. – Lady Gaga’s sales counted and that bitch sold her album for a dollar! Jay doesn’t need billboard or soundscan to tell him otherwise.

      1. Wow Gay-z is better than Wayne because he has more money & he dresses in suits and tuxedos. 11. Hip Hop is official dead, or at least on life support… where is that new Nas or Kendrick?

      signed, follow at noles506

    12. As an accountant for YMCMB I can confirm Jay Z does not want to go to war with YMCMB. Wayne already said that if Jay Z disses one more time, he will go Mel Gibson on him. The YMCMB army is built for war. Wayne a certified gangsta. He got 3 tear drops, did a bid on the island and all that. Wayne ethered rappers and even caused permanent damage to Dez Bryant’s knee. Jay is wack. All Wayne has to do is throw him a rock and Jay will fuck his life up again

      1. *blinks* I just can’t. Not with fools like this actually thinking that trash is hip-hop. It’s not. That bubblegum nonsense YMCMB pollutes the air with needs to die in a fire. God, why is this generation so full of softheaded over-opinionated morons (if it doesn’t apply to you, I’m not talking to/about you. Stop listening to that trash, you want substance? Stop listening to that saccharine sweet hip-pop.

    13. hiphopdx writers are the least knowledgable people on the internet.

blueprint 3 is only platinum, not double platinum!

    14. I thought it was only free to those who downloaded the application first? I wouldn’t think that a “free” album, necessarily because you have to “purchase” and application under most DRM agreements, even if free.

    15. pretty much jayz made it known that hes in there with a milli before it even drops. hes a fuckin boss. like his music or not (hes a beast) you gotta respect his business savvy

    16. Even if The RIAA Doenst Count It As Platinum Now He Still Sold A MILLION COPIES 1,000,000 Copies Jay-Z Smart Business Man
His Album Could Be Horrible AND HE STILL SOLD 1 MILLION COPIES Not Bad Man Not Bad At All

    17. first off, he hasn’t sold a million. a million were bought hoping to be sold for advertising.

second, record sales do not equal a good album.

fuck jay z and all the rhymes he has bitten over the years

      1. @Anonymous – “first off, he hasn’t sold a million. a million were bought…” — KILL YOURSELF

      2. …what rhymes bitten? Cite a lyric or 3. You’re right, record sales don’t equal a good album (ie: lil’ wayne, drake, or anything else that camp has touched. Ever.) Wonder why people think it’s cool now to just hate on everything. You don’t like his music? Change the station, tv, or song. Quit your b!tchin.

      3. And will someone please tell me the difference of Samsung buying A million copies of his album, and J. Cole who just bought like a 100 copies at one store of Born Sinner, RIAA better only count that for one! Fuck outta here RIAA — A MILLION COPIES SOLD IS A MILLION COPIES SOLD. #GENIUS

      4. selling an album for the use of a promotional tool is completely different than selling an album. if you cannot see the difference you are just blind and dumb.

      5. Saw the video, wasn’t impressed. Near as I can tell, you can take the end of the video and sum it up… just cuz he quotes BIG, he’s biggin’ up his brother. Man, BIG samples were over half that video. He uses 2 lyrics from from Snoop, 1 from Slick, and 1 from Rakim and he’s the “ultimate biter” love how they threw in the battle rap where he’s actually quoting Nas (again, and throwing the contradictory verses back at him) but its left out. Or the BIG L track that Jay is actually on. Lmao. Come the hell on man. Like I said. Haters gonna hate. Don’t like what you hear. Change the station kid.

Oi.. forgot. Pick your favorite artist. I don’t really care, see if they haven’t borrowed a verse.

    18. As far as I can tell, Jay Z just found a very interesting way to sell records that has never been done yet. Because of this new scheme, Billboard cannot account for his sales. Personally, I think Jay just broke the system and should be awarded a platinum plaque. I also see new ways to artists to get their music out now. Regardless if he gets the platinum plaque, Jay is very smart for this move.

      1. u know what? that fuck you should be directed at fans. cuz they bought into him for doing that shit. and this platinum before your album comes out bullshit isn’t fair game. smart business moe but not fair game cuz now an artist will try to live up to that. that’s what messing up hip hop: too many people biting each other and not doing it right and making it worse.

      2. Actually, this has been done before.

PRINCE gave away albums at his concert, PRINCE counted a percentage of concert ticket sales as the price of the CD.

So then Billboard CHANGED the rules after PRINCE b/c he went double platinum due to his MASSIVE touring fanbase.

Also, Jimmy Iovine did this with Gaga’s last album.

Amazon bought Gaga’s album BORN THIS WAY in bulk. Then resold it on Amazon.com for $1.00.

Gaga sold over one million albums in one week.
Over 600,000 of those copies were sold on Amazon.com for one dollar.

Billboard then CHANGED the rules and will now only count albums that sold for over $3.69 to prevent that from happening again.

So the Jay Z strikes a SIMILAR DEAL that GAGA had but ups the price to $5.00 in order to make sure his sales are acknowledged by Billboard as albums sales

Now Billboard is indicating they will not count as album sales and they will CHANGE the rules again ??

BILLBOARD is slowly becoming irrelevant during this era of music.

They will not be relevant in about 10 years.

I can see many other artists striking these types of deals in the future.

    19. I feel the RIAA , people would be able to fudge numbers doing that way. I’m sick of fools trying to find new ways to manipulated numbers to catch Michael Jackson Thriller and such. You slip that record into someones phone when they bought it. Am I gonna turn down a free album? I’m not gonna turn down the free calculator that came with it. That ain’t right

      1. jay not trying to minipulate his number with the riaa he trying to minipulate his numbers in his bank account a million records sold is a million records sold the end

    20. get off jay z dick the man sold 1000000 copies of his album to samsung for $5 that = $5000000 do you think jay z care if the riaa acknowlede it as platnium when he got his money up front already and jay gone go platinum on his own anyway and on top of that the man got a $20000000 deal with samsung he just cashed out even if his album flop stop hating on this man he breaking down doors he setting the blue print new rules new ways to promote make money and sell records stop hating

    21. Great move by Samsung and Jay-Z, although as an owner of one of Samsung’s other smart phone brands, I do feel a bit slighted by the face that this app is only available to people who own specific Samsung phones. My phone came out at the same time as the SIII, so it’s not like it’s an ancient artifact or anything. It certainly suggests Samsung doesn’t have the same respect for all of its customers. Being a second-class customer at Samsung certainly doesn’t inspire customer loyalty.

As for Jay-Z’s album sales, I think it’s equally unfair if Billboard DOESN’T count these sales. The albums are bought and paid for. The fact that they’re being distributed for free after being purchased seems irrelevant to me as does the fact that each purchase isn’t made directly by an individual. It’s not that much different than someone buying an album as a gift or people downloading the album after having been given an iTunes gift card. Furthermore, if you don’t count the sales to Samsung, it’s not exactly an honest representation of consumer demand for the album. After all, it’s very possible that a large number of the people who will get this album for free would have purchased it if not for the fact that they’re getting it for free from Samsung. Whether you count it or not, it’s clear that Billboard’s numbers aren’t going to be accurate. I would think that in an industry that had faced its share of business challenges in recent years, artists that find creative solutions for selling albums should be rewarded, not punished.

      1. So Rapper Riff Raff arranged it so Hershey candy company buys 2 million of his albums now a young blood hears Riff Raff sold a 2 million and thinks that must be better hip hop than Action Bronson and don’t support Bronson. Then goes so far to start making music sounding like Riff Raff cause hey he heard 2 MILL was sold so people must be buy that sound.Thats bullshit Dubz. Its lying to the public man thus destroying the art in the long run

      2. You’re looking at this entirely wrong tho. Because Jay found another way to take the money out of promoters/labels hands and put it back in the ARTIST’s hands – he’s going to hurt the industry by allowing artists like RiFF to profit and Action to starve. Thank you “What if? Contradiction man!
        Holes in your theory:
Aside from thinking that RiFF will last any longer than say, a Bubba Sparxx or Waka Flocka or be considered outside of that range.
You need to have more faith in your music tastes. If an artist is strong. Let the album talk. Word of mouth works. Not the sales. So Riff sold 2 mil? Have you HEARD dude?? I’m not buying that. He could outsell the Thriller album and all I will see is that “the people” fell for the okiedoke.

I know Trinidad James and Nicki Minaj came out strong to start when the albums dropped. I didn’t by that sh!t, I leave that to the bubblegum popping backpackers that listen to Z100. Picked up Good Kid, Maad City, and Born Sinner for the wordplay. Might not do as well but I will endorse an artist that I like. That’s it. So, whether or not Jay’s endorsement deal is successful or not it will reflect only on Him. If its good. People will imitate to get their own art out. If it’s not? It will be another BP3. People should really start thinking outside the box in the digital age. Music is an art, and a business. Unless you take a risk, you can’t reap the reward.

      3. I’d also add that the link between sales and quality was lost a long time ago – especially first week sales. In fact, with a few exceptions, the best selling albums in hip-hop are almost exclusively average or below average albums in terms of quality.

Secondly, the Rapper Riff Raff example is flawed to me because I don’t think a corporation would invest so much in a promotion like this unless the artist whose albums they are buying already has mass commercial appeal. An unknown artist isn’t likely to have the opportunity for bulk sales. You could perhaps argue that counting sales like this is unfair because only established artists have opportunities for bulk sales like this, but the industry has always offered marketing advantages to established acts (for example more label support, appearances on award shows or talk shows, point-of-sale advertisements in music stores, large advance orders by music stores, etc.). This is a classic example of the artists and modern business being ahead of the old-school industry. It’s no different than when albums and singles first became available for sale online and the industry didn’t know how to adjust to this new outlet. If Billboard doesn’t count Jay-Z sales through Samsung now, I’m sure they’ll have to correct them in the future when Taylor Swift does the same thing…

    22. why is everybody mad that samsung bought 1000000 of jay z alubum to give away for Free to its customers which jay z earned $5000000 i see why some of u dudes hate jay z but what if a company buy 1000000 of your shitty cd and give it away to their customers for purchising an advertise product would you turn down that deal

      1. Because he want to be better then the Beatles and have 20 number 1 albums. Get it! Its all about prestige and fame.

      2. Jay-z Thinks success is Kanye West’s dick which he keeps riding all the time…but this time he’s gonna flop hard….like his pal Kanye’s “yeezus”….

      3. I agree with fronter. It is b.c he is tweeting about Billboard. Jay obviously wants that Billboard spot but he also wants to make money.
he knows he would not be able to top past sells. This deal is a great deal for older artists like jayz and Bon Jovi for example

    23. ok so, yea Jay-Z does bite rhymes from other Artists. A lot. Like, a lot a lot. Just listen to over 6 minutes of this shit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqScH2CfYTg . But. He still SOLD 1 million copies of his album, all be it to one company, it still counts. A million sold is a million sold. As long as the album isn’t priced at less than 1/3 the retail price, the sales WILL count. Genius idea to sell a million copies of your album. And yes, I have no life.

    24. FIRST OF ALL JAY-Z HATER’S I LOVE YOU….!!!!!
SO WELL ; MAY BE I AGREE THAT JAY-Z IS A GOOD BUSINESSMEN ;ALTHOUGH IF AIN’T HE’S GOOD AT MAKING MONEY…MAY BE …
BUT THERE IS ONE THING THAT HE DOSENT GIVES A FUCK ABOUT HIS MOST LOYAL FANS….”MONEY” IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS ON HIS MIND…
TRUE ARTIST IS THE ONE WHO ALWAYS CREATE A NEW FAN BASE …EVEN TURN HATERS TO OWN FAN BASE…BUT THIS NIGGA DOSENT SEEMS INTERESTED ABOUT THAT AT ALL SO FUCK JAY-Z/GAY-Z

    25. yeah i agree with you ..but 50 Cent is the real gangsta….not like this pussy ass nigga…..
And I BET 50 Cent’s “STREET KING IMMORTAL” will sell more units than Kanye West’s pretty much fucked up album ‘YEEZUS’ AND Gay-z’s “FAGNA CARTER HOLY SHIT” COMBINED…..

    26. ” JAY-Z’S BUSINESS MOVE IN ORDER TO GO PLATINUM AND MAKE MONEY WILL BE REMEMBERED AS THE MOST BITCH-ASS MOVE IN THE HISTORY OF HIP-HOP”………… INDEED HE’S A DISGRACE TO HIP-HOP;AIN’T NO NIGGA WHO’S DAMN CONFIDENT ABOUT HIS SHIT DOING WELL IN MARKET WOULD DO THAT…..
      ANY YEAH….YOU MOTHERFUCKERS….
      HE’S A BITCH IN FRONT OF 50 CENT….GGGG G-UNITTT….!!!!!!

      1. I kinda disagree… yes jayz is desperate and he knows he cannot sell albums like he used to but…

Prince kinda did something similiar years and years ago… except he just gave CDs away at his concert instead of having a phne complany give them away.

Prince is still considered a legend….

I think this will be done in the future and Billboard will become less relevant

    27. nope free albums don’t count (don’t care if a phone company bought 1 million copies)

come down from cloud 9 jay and join the rest of us

    28. Jay Z is not giving it away for free, he got paid. I think it should count toward album sales since. If Best Buy or amazon choose to give the album away, it is their business.

To all the haters, Jay Z is not a business man, he is a business…..man. He has already made a profit off the album and it will be better than the corny stuff out now. Bet that.

      1. So days have turned around so bad for Jay-z that now you are comparing him with corny stuff giving motherfuckers….so i say thank you ; you proved how much Jay-z sucks……Oh and I thought that he is she /she is he /she owes my dick….jayz’s a bitch…. and I thought he is a “business……woman”.He had already made a bitch ass move so he gets more rich….like his whore bitch…he’s not gonna pay a fuckin penny to you….so shut the fuck up motherfucker but will you….????

    29. Kingdom Come only sold 1.5m (but was certified double, bs if you ask me)

BP3 did cleared 1.9m and wasn’t certified double platinum, strange (unless they certify it double once MCHG comes out for promo purposes).

      1. albums get certified platinum when label SHIPS OUT 1 million coppies.it can sell 900k but its still certified platinum

      1. First, his music is the product.

Second, he isnt pushing it onto anyone. He made a deal to make millions. The company that bought the music is giving it away for free. You do not have to download it or buy the album.

      2. well I think this is a smart deal…

I can see other artists and companies following his lead.

Look at what GaGa did with Amazonn. It is essentially the same deal.

Amazon bought her albums in bulk and sold them for one dollar… then Billboard changed their rules so that it would not be considered platinum by them…

        but the question is….

How relevant is Billboard these day?? Especially in Urban music….

I dont even think they have any black reporters working for them. Im serious… Maybe one…but the Urban blog is ran by a latina… I think they may not be relevant in Urban culture anymore… hmmm

I think artists ( especially r&b and hip hop artists) should pay less attention to the “charts”.

it is all about touring & endorsement deals, twitter followers, social media power, etc…

    30. People it’s ok to have your own opinion about who’s best but seriously if your hating then why are you here? Suck a dick.

    31. AMerican gANGSTA “ONLY” WENT PLATINUM?? Platinum is great these dasys

      having sadi that….

his new album will not be platinum

I am glad he was able to strike a deal with samsung…. but that should not qualify as platinum like the other platinum albums that arent bought in bulk

Maybe there should br another certification for albums bought in bulk

I think this is the future… smart business deal…. but it should not be certified platinum

      1. Platinum is platinum, I agree. As for buying in bulk, the problem is how many of those CD’s are actually being bought by the consumer. In this downloading age, how could anyone certify something platinum knowing there’s a good chance a million people downloaded it for free.

    32. who cares?

Fucking hip hop fans messing up the culture bc of concerns about units sold. Just buy the album(s) and support the music.

    33. If the album didn’t physically sell a million copies then it shouldn’t be certified platinum. Giving it away for free actually hurts the chance of Jay going platinum, so that’s not a smart move on Samsung’s part. They’re just milking his name to sell more of their product. It’s big business nonsense.
