Jay-Z once again sits down with Charlie Rose to promote his new book Decoded, which is now in stores and available digitally.
The book landed at number three on the New York Times Best Sellers list upon its release late last month. Jay-Z expands on many of the books topics in this sit down with Charlie Rose, including his childhood and days as a crack dealer.
Here is the entire interview in three parts.
love him or hate him, dude’s talented and maad successfull. Propz to jay.
jay-z is the truth, mfrs hate, why, dont know..his lyrics when on right song, not the one he trying to sell his album from are deep, even the pop ones like izzo, look, name me another albume in the past 20 yrs that is as lyrically deeper than REASONABLE DOUBT, go head I’ll wait..ok then, give the man props,he doing it like no other rap dude did, for real, he is a bonafide lyricist, has had big hits, clothing, rap label, and still is real, and str8 from the muthafucking projects, but doesnt rap stupid..diddy could be the man, but can’t rap, 50 could be the man, but he stupid, and eminem could be the man, but he ain’t from the projects or know what it is like to be a young black nigga growing up america being despised for simply being black, no one wanna admit it , but it is still that way, but much props to shady, but like i said jay is the fucking man, not on his balls, just had to speak the truth….POLO
fyi, slim grew up in one of the roughest neighborhoods in detroit…idk wtf you consider the projects if that isnt.
Em grew up in Warren, Michigan. Far for the projects.
@ ANON Em aint grow up in Detroit, he grew up in the suburbs outside of the D, yo bitch ass never know what your talking about
Jay Z is a pop artist see the first 60 seconds of the first clip that shows the music he is known for. Jay Z is a great entertainer and can rap, but a true artist he is not. I dont give a fuck about his book cuz his lyrics arent that deep. Lets watch Jay try to act like his music was profound and not pop club friendly.
C/S…..AGREE 1000 PERCENT
have u listen to 22 two’s u must be a west coast dick licker
and how long ago was 22 2’s that was like one of his first songs and even still wasnt that hard it was just some mid level brag-ish.
Honestly I wanna know what are the requirements of a “TRUE” artist and with that can I get some examples..?? Because if you say Jay-Z is not lyric you must be crazy.. it is bc you think you understand his lyrics at a first listen is why you think he not a great lyricist.. i.e double entendre.. you should actually go to the book store and look through the book you prob won’t be amazed bc you have this animosity against this guy about being something that doesn’t even exist “True” artist. it is just amazing people get at Jay-z as if he is the Soulja Boy rapping ir even Bow Wow.. just amazing, but who cares Jigga makes bangers.. is that what is job is???????
Agreed. Look how Jay-z is being used by these people. He is so insular that he does not realize that he was chosen to succeed at the great expense of a generation. His genocide themed music built on his drug dealing is still just about that. A man who sold crack to his people. This fool keeps being used not realizing that every time he utters about being a friend to the president and having him on blackberry he just enrages the conservatives and provides more reasons for people to distance themselves from the presidency. The nerve of that crack pusher.
These niggas callin Jay fake are the same niggas that will say Eminem the realest artist out there, when both Jay and Em both went pop to sell records. The difference is Jay still do more hip hop than pop where as Em other than two songs is pop. But shady got so many dickriders that most of ya’all niggas ain’t gonna see it.
Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Read the book. I guarantee you’ll feel otherwise. I’m a fan since day one and believe Jay is the illest rapper ever, but even I was amazed by how deep some of his lyrics are. Even lyrics from songs you’ll call “pop.” Jigga’s genius is he “goes pop” to reach a large audience but remains authentic in the process. Those are two characterics you don’t often find together in rap artists.
“I dumb down for my audience, double my dollars. They cricize me for it yet the all yell holla. If skill sold truth be told, I’d probably be lyrically Tabib Kweli…and I can’t help the poor if I’m one of them, so I got rich and gave back. To me, that’s the win-win.”
How do i begin this..Jay-z said it best “all yall can suck my balls thru my draws” why hate on a living legend
we don’t believe you, you need more people
Jay is a good example of timing is everything. This dude executes with precision always. People say he is this and that but he has a strong team and a good circle to keep moving forward. No Im not a Stan cause truth be told I will listen to Joe Budden before I listen Jay. You can’t knock the hustle.
“HOW AM I EVEN MENTIONED BY ANY OF YOU FUCKINBEGINNERS..”…when “dirtybackpackers” say what a “true” artist is,it will always be somebody who “was” hot..not present tense or who “will” be hot..because they have no grasp on reality..and the reality is JAY “been” hot..will continue to be “hot”..so essentially its something wrong with that…this man is the only dude in the history of hiphop who has put out top notch shit in two different eras of rap..do u lames even understand how hard or amazing that is..this is a young mans sport and this dude competes on a level with all the dudes in the game right now..in sales and quality of product..nigz been hatin on dude since 96’…he aint get five mics out the gate..that was a “oops we made a mistake”..just like they did with BIGGIE and Pac..the nigz who got five mics out the gate..u guessed it..kings of the “dirtybackpack” movement.artists like tribe called quest..nothing against them but hiphop writers have a bias..just like in todays climate..eminem gets all the praise..for what..i dont know..but i guess someone is playin “i love the way u lie” and other notable eminem jams..fucouttahere…JAY IS THE TOP NIGGA IN HIPHOP..END OF STORY
for once you’re making sense Dutch.
but how is the stuff eminem does any different from Jay-Z?
its not, you might have a little dirtybackpacker syndrome when it comes to Eminem
assuming you the same dude @anonymous..we always got different opinions but sometimes u make sense..I WILL NEVER BE A “DIRTYBACKPACKER”..because im open to all different types of music and i love rap and soul music..not just east coast shit..or some “mental” fabrication of what i think is “real”..whats “real” to ou,might not be “real” to me..how can a NY nigga tell a “down south” nigga what he listen to aint “real”,when the cultures are completely different..im from chicago,so i got an education on all coasts sounds..i travel,so i understand why a GUCCI record go hard in ATLANTA..what i dont like is “the so-called hiphop elite”..they are generally wack-opinionated people who dont even have a grasp on what “real” people listen too…Its not that EMINEM HAS NEVER DROPPED A GOOD ALBUM OR RECORD..he just has not in a very long time to be considered the “best” at a game that usually shows no love for a couple seasons..any other dude who didnt have a certified hit or even a good album for as long as he has would have been considered washed-up..this dude gets no play in all of the cities i been to..not just mine..and i aint talkin about top 40 stations..
^^^
Ok so why do so many people still play the Nas card?
he hasnt done anything of relevance in nearly 7 years.
No matter how much you might not like “Love the way you lie” appearantlly millions oher across the country did. and another gang of people can actually relate to a song like that or “Not Affraid” even.
really if anything Eminem is making more socially relevant music now than he has at any other point in his music career.
But people still hang on songs like “Kill You” & “Kim” like they’re written by the Beatles of hiphop. now matter whats said no one in the music industry really no matter the genre can match his ability make a good song on a consistant bases, regardless of what the so called “true hiphop heads” say. The whole reason behind rap music was to get a message across and no one does that better than Eminem. Wether its a song like “Lose yourself” or “Drug Ballad”.
Lyrics aside, Em’s delivery and rhyme style is unmatched by anyone in the game right now. the ability to switch up flows and rhyme schemes in the same verse is nuts.
You must not have been to the west coast or Northwest or midwest or southwest where Em had been blowing up the radio for the past year.
I do love the term “dirtybackpacker” though, that is such a great term to describe these supposed “hiphop heads” that say everything thats released is the ruining of hiphop.
u gon’ have to go through the archives on me mane..i pull the “Nas” card too..this man drops mediocre rap albums and no one says it..the worst DOUBLE ALBUM ever by a rap artist at his level..dont nobody play that shit either..ppl “talk” about DISTANT RELATIVES..they dont play that shit..and DAMIEN MARLEY flowed much better over that production than NAS..nas sounded like he was tryin to catch up to all the beats…EMINEM on the other hand is different..i dont agree with him be called the “greatest”..he has not consistently competed in the game enough..he dont do shows..his albums are wack..not even half good and the two shows he did this year were with JAY(somebody who stays on tour)..he is a powers that be tool..his music is never mentioned in what was the “coldest” song of the yr conversations or “album talk”..but he is brought up as the “best”..im from the midwest..chicago..a major metropolis of america..right in the middle of this shit and ppl like Jay get brought up constantly..imjussayin..whether its “biggie,jay-z,nas”..or younger folks..”jay,wayne,drake”..or “kanye,jay,wayne”..its never an eMINEM reference..i dont make shit up..i just call it how i see it..this dude made a couple good records but this legacy they feedin the people is false..
If the public sees em as being “wack,” then how the hell does the dude sell so many albums?
I agree with one guy saying “Just who the hell do you consider to be a real artist?”
I can guarantee every example given will be some half-assed Bullshit rapper that cant flow or really even rhyme. either that or some fag who you consider to be :gangster” dispite gangster being the fakest of any persona in the world.
How is Jay a pop artist? How is Eminem a pop artist? and Nas Isnt? Lupe isnt? Mos Def isn’t? Jadakiss isn’t?
biggest problem is you idiots dont even know what pop music is. Pop music is made up of every genre. Toby Keith can be pop, Nas can be pop, Jill Scott can be pop, Metallica can be pop, you’re favorite bullshit rapper could be pop if he was ny good.
you people really are a pathetic bunch
Epic Post.
wow first time i read a comments that makes sense in this website made of stupid morons who thinks that rappers are evil and control the world
I found it funny how people hate on a guy who is basically representing and expanding your entire culture.
its called the bucket of crap syndrome.
when they see one getting out the rest turn on it and pull it back in with the rest of them.
they would rather see them all fail instead of supporting one to success.
that’s your opinion.
some think JayZ is positive,
other think he is negative,
others are in between
that’s not it man.
some people like jz because they like his raps, like his music.
others don’t like him because he represents corporate elite someone who benefitted from mainstream media because he was in the right time frame to do so (mid late 90’s, 2000’s) and used that to just further his own career and not pave the way for others to come after him.
Me, personally I don’t like really any post mid 1990’s hip hop artists because to me they were picked by the machine, picked by the labels and the big CEO’s.
They were made popular because the labels wanted them to be popular because they catered to the image they were looking for.
then go bhack to 88 you loser
@anon, you forget the struggle they go through to get a deal then you say they were picked? how? Jay was not given a deal for mad years so he started his own thing….. but you hate on that… you rather he signed to a deal that then dropped him when they didn’t need them….. kind of like say, 80’s rappers?
The truth is….. its really crab in a barrel…
Hip Hop is about to have a billionaire rapper and a lot of its followers hate this…
what the fuck is progress then?
we dont need no billionaire hip hop artists you idiots. we dont need no millionaire artists either idiots.
these millions should go to our starving children in africa you fuck tards, and you its progress? nigga please we dyin back home cuz of all the support that was given to promote this so called future billionaires career and others like him. and why? just so we could feel entertained by our “miserable” lives (as they see it) and work all day pay our taxes and go wild on the weekend.
nice progress that is.
take those fucking billions from his bank account and give them to my people starving all over the world. our people. white, black, asian, latino, indian, u name it. were all one. thats where our money should go, to help each other out cause without each other were nothing.
no.
our greed is more important.
@idiot
Instead of worrying about what the fuck is going on in another continent how about you try to get your neighborhood squared away first
@idiots I agree with most of what you’re saying, but he earned his own in his own rights. See there are some famous & rich people who had it and blew it all off. So I rather support who has it and grinding to get more, just like any other human being who is striving to succeed.
Also, this man is helping out others, doing charity works and such, like water for life thing he was part of. If we pull everybody down to “broke” or “struggling” level then no one would even consider helping out each other. This is all part of trickel down effect.
Personally, even if I wanted to I can’t help a starving children in Africa or other parts of the world, because I am too busy to provide for myself and then it comes to people around me. If I succeed in life just like this man, then I will but until then it’s me and my loved ones.
Peace.
@anon I understand what you’re saying about him and others being part of the corporate world. However, you can’t really blame the rappers, elites are the people who run the world so either deal with them or be broke. This sadly will go on forever, so artists are accepting it.
Hip-Hop has grown over the past few years and it is more than just the cypher. People realized that you can make money out of it, so instead of the art form it turned into business. Just like any other genre that was popular in the past. My guess is, it will die out soon and hip-hop will go back to it’s own roots and becomes less popular and profitable like Jazz. And it will play around the local clubs.
Hip-Hop lives in two terms right now. 1, if you can’t beat them join em’ and 2, survival of the fittest. Jay-Z just adapted faster and better than the others. You can’t blame him for taking advantage of the situation to better himself, even if it stands against what “true hip-hop” is.
does anyone else count 52 minutes?
lol this is pretty much jay summarizing parts of his book. man behind closed doors that interviewer doesn’t know WHATS going on… TUPACK hahahahah

wtf jay has got the weirdest fucking laugh
“I dumb down for my audience, double my dollars. They cricize me for it yet the all yell holla. If skill sold truth be told, I’d probably be lyrically Tabib Kweli…and I can’t help the poor if I’m one of them, so I got rich and gave back. To me, that’s the win-win.”
Yep …. tells you everything you need to know about him and his approach to “art”. Nas and Lauryn Hill’s music will live beyond the next sevearl decades because of it’s SINCERITY …. Jay-Z not so much … he makes disposable “art” …. and now he soooooo wants to be considered the same caliber artist as Rakim, Nas, Lauryn Hill, and Talib …. you sold out Jigga …. no one believes you could f*ck with those artists anyway.
@ Idiot: that is the dumbest shit i have ever heard. the millions and billions ppl spend is given by YOU and the people who decide they like the artist and support them by buying their cd/dvd/merchandise. If you want to get on a pulpit and preach, first get off your high horse, SPEND money instead of bootlegging shit (im sure your the type) and send some $$ to a charity.. i bet you dont ..or never have pls STFU and GTFOH with that shit…the artist didnt force ppl to give them $$ rather than to a charity.. be mad at the ppl, not the artist.. sheesh!!! get fuckin real..
i thought that interview was interesting becuhs jay-z gave these answers that he really didnt try to think twice about its seemed real
