JAY-Z Speaks On Rap Retirement: ‘Who Am I To Shut It Off?’

JAY-Z rarely grants interviews but thanks to having a tight bond with Kevin Hart, Hov agreed to sit down with the stand-up comedy dignitary for an episode in the second season of his Hart to Heart series.

In a teaser clip shared on Wednesday (July 13) the Roc Nation founder reflected on his brief three-year hiatus following 2003’s The Black Album and isn’t closing the door on returning to the booth in the future.

“I tried that,” he said of the 2003 retirement. “I just needed a break. I was really burnt out at that time. I was releasing an album every year… I just looked up one day and was like, ‘I’m tired.’ I had never been on a vacation until I wanna say 2000 — my whole life. I was really burnt out in that moment.”

Hov doesn’t know exactly what’s ahead for him musically these days as he’s not actively working on a project, but he isn’t ruling out another album in the future.

“I’m not actively making music or making an album or have plans to make an album, but I never want to say that I’m retired,” he admitted. “It’s a gift, so who am I to shut it off? And it may have a different form or interpretation. Maybe it’s not an album, maybe it is. I have no idea, but I’m just going to leave it open.”

Charlamagne Tha God Thought HOV Highway Lanes Were For JAY-Z

JAY-Z’s most recent solo album, 4:44, celebrated its fifth anniversary in June. Look for the rest of the conversation to arrive on Thursday (July 14) when Hart to Heart‘s season two hits Peacock with additional guests including Saweetie, Tracee Ellis-Ross, Pete Davidson, Chris Rock and more.

    1. Meanwhile Nas releasing classics. Say what you have to say about businesses and business man Jay, Nas catalog is better than Jay’s. Fact

      1. And Jay made tons of money off of nas when nas signed under Jay z brand..I’m sure Jay don’t mind nas putting out more classics lol

        1. Under his brand? If you’re talking about when Jay Z was president of Def Jam and Nas had signed to be there then Jay didn’t make any money off that. He didn’t take his publishing, royalties, or anything… In fact Jay stopped being president after 3 years there. Do your research.

      2. Nas put out one ok album in the 90s and then made shit after that. Jay z bodied nas all the way.

        1. “Nas put out one ok album in the 90s” lol. Go listen to illmatic again from start to finish. Album is a classic that influenced countless artists and albums. I agree that Nas has not been consistant through out his entire career, but as of late he is on his game. KD, KD2, and Magic are dope albums in my opinion.

Nas never signed to any of Jay’s brands. That’s a misunderstanding. Jay worked for Def Jam.

Both legends are being attentive to any product they drop. They can not afford to drop anything less than dope that might tarnish the endless GOAT debate.

      3. Classics!! Where? FOH Nas aint made a classic since StillMatic.
Jays Catalog shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Nas.
That boy last 4 albums been TRASH.
Meanwhile every time Jay put a verse on something its a trending topic for the culture.

    2. That’s exactly what it was. A hiatus, a break. Not “retirement”. Wish more rappers would look up what “retiring” actually means before throwing it around like a used rag.

    3. Jigga gon drop again when Nas drop again, that’s his competition from the Big era, so that’s who he eyes….prediction!! 🙂

    4. ONLY CLASSICS HE HAS UNDER HIS BELT R RD, HKL, BP, BLACK ALBUM,,, & AG,

      THE RRST = HOT GSRBAGE!!!
