Nas Won JAY-Z Beef, Claims Dame Dash: ‘Jay’s [‘Ether’] Response Was Terrible’

Dame Dash believes that Nas was the outright winner of his beef with JAY-Z, despite his previous affiliation with Hov.

During a recent appearance on the That’s F***ed Up Podcast with A.D. Dolphin, Joshua Engle and Alejandro G, the Roc-A-Fella co-founder reflected on the legendary feud and said that JAY-Z’s response to “Ether,” “Super Ugly,” was “terrible.”

“Jay’s response was terrible,” Dame Dash said. “The thing is, we had first hit him with the joint at Summer Jam that was kinda hard, the ‘Takeover.’ But when [Nas] came with the ‘Ether,’ I was kinda hype because he said my name. I was like, ‘I guess I’m in a rap record.’

“But the response, I wasn’t there for the response. I had landed, Irv Gotti fucked that one up. Every time Irv Gotti got in my business, he fucked shit up … He threw that ‘Ether’ on him. He had him apologizing. The rap that he did was wack — when I heard it, I was pissed.”

He continued: “I was coming from doing a Rocawear ad on a private [jet]. I had just landed from like Arizona and I’m listening to this shit on the radio like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ So I was like, ‘Go to the fucking Baseline [Studios],’ you know, ’cause I wanna know what happened. I’m like, ‘What the fuck happened?’

“And they in there high-fiving and shit. I’m like, ‘What you high-fiving for? This shit is wack.’ This n-gga talking about other n-ggas’ business and shit, like we don’t do that. And it was Irv. I was like, ‘Irv Gotti.’ I called Irv, told him don’t ever get in my business again bro, like, ‘What you doing? You not about war.'”

He added: “You see how his wars go with rap — he doesn’t win it. He’s not a general like that. So it was like, stay out of my business. And Irv keeps talking about me all the time, like stop talking about me, Irv.”

Dash clarified that he doesn’t have beef with Irv Gotti; the Murder Inc. founder just “gets on his nerves.” He also revealed that he’s yet to have a proper talk with JAY-Z about their falling-out.

Irv Gotti previously spoke about JAY-Z’s “Super Ugly” in 2019, arguing “Ether” and “Takeover” should be the songs that get compared.

“We never thought that they was gonna take ‘Super Ugly’ and ‘Ether’ and compare them,” he told VladTV. “It was some rap battle shit — you know how you rhyme off somebody’s beat. So I put it together and he shitted, and we didn’t think nothing of it.

“We didn’t understand how big it was. Like, if y’all wanted to play two records, you should play ‘Ether’ and the ‘Takeover!’”

Dame Dash and JAY-Z’s beef stems from the dissolution of Roc-A-Fella Records in the 2000s. During an interview last year, Dash opened up about feeling betrayed by Hov.

“Yeah, all that, but we were friends,” he told The Art of Dialogue. “Like, how would you feel if your brother just betrayed you for money? Would it hurt?

“That’s the algorithm. It wasn’t surprising ’cause that’s what always happens. We were breaking the algorithm, we were doing it a different way and sticking together, but that’s what always happens. They make one sell out the other, their friend, divide and conquer, that’s a normal story.”

He added: “That was my n-gga, like we never argued, nothing. That’s why I didn’t know it was coming. That was some real slick shit. I was like, ‘That n-gga’s cold.’”

    1. He stay living in the past Hov and Biggs have moved on he still talking about the same shit 20 plus years later.

    2. Even if you compare Ether to Takeover, Nas still won that battle. Nobody after those songs came out was referring to the loser of a rap battle of getting “taken over” or whatever…. after Ether dropped, if you lost a battle you got Ethered. When your diss song becomes part of the cultures vernacular, you won the battle.

      1. I prefer Takeover. Ether was dope but Takeover was spitting facts while Ether was just about making jokes. I do agree that Super Ugly wasn’t on the same level though. I think it was one of the few times Jay actually lost his cool. He saw how people was embracing Ether and he got in his feelings and that’s not when Jay-Z is at his best.

      2. I think if you go through line for line you’ll see Jay was essentially making jokes for most of his verse about Nas, with little facts sprinkled in. Line for line on both songs, Nas seemed to have more facts about Jay… though his song was all about Jay, whereas Jay’s was only a verse. The most stinging thing that Jay said was “I know who I paid Searchlight Publishing”, but MC Search even came out and said he never owned Nas’s publishing and it was just a clever line to get under Nas’ skin. Most of Jay was saying Nas is washed up and his only good album was Illmatic, which is opinions, not facts. Both are great songs though….

      3. I would also like to add that MC Serch has stated since Jay Z sampled Nas’ voice, Nas got paid for it. So that takes out some of the air for that whole ‘Takeover is all facts’ narrative.

      4. i never understood why it was a big blow that Jay z said he paid MC Serch for a record deal Nas signed when he was 20 years old.

      5. you know these people? Furthermore, it’s entertainment. So you prefer the inferior song because you think it was more truthful? Nas murdered Jay on every level.

    3. He’s correct that Super Ugly was wack but let’s not forget, the majority of Takeover was aimed at Bandana P (rest in peace) therefore Super Ugly should be the track that’s compared to Ether.

    4. Damn Dame, LET IT GO! He’s still discussing Jay-Z? Why? They haven’t been business partners in damn near 20 years! Yet he always looking to shade him somehow. It’s funny people forget when they first split Dame was saying how he made Jay, and he wouldn’t be the same without him lol

    5. I mean, he’s not wrong. Super Ugly was atrocious . The Takeover was a way better song, but Nas won the battle with Ether

    6. OK so Takeover was nice but not strong enough to touch Ether. You can’t have a single verse, with distorted facts, to go against the best rapper to touch the mic, Especially when that rapper has an entire song toward you and your campe/label. Takeover was ok for what it tried to do, Ether was good for what it DID DO. NYC new it and ether won. if you didn’t get to see it live, you missed out. And…….. Super ugly was a comeback because Jay knew takeover wasn’t touching Ether. That was a corny play and i would pit Super ugly tagainst N@s stillmatic freestyle.

    7. Hov ain’t never been all that good with beef rap. Takeover is his only good one. Nas isn’t good with beef rap either.

      1. Nas hasn’t ever dissed anybody else. one of the most chill dudes in the game. Always has been. It’s not in his nature. But when he did it, it was perfection. It’s why he’s the GOAT.

    8. Y’all do understand Dame is answering questions right????? If people want him to let it go, stop asking him those questions!!!!! It’s not like he’s going on his own and spilling his guts. Anyway, Takeover was a better song. Ether was a better diss record. Plain and simple. Super Ugly was Irv Gotti trying to insert himself into something to be relevant. LOL a yr later Irv tries to sign Nas!!!! Straight mess!!!

    11. Dame clearly was blinded by Jay Z’s moves to be head of def jam. Because no close associate of Jay z would ever say that
