Q-Tip first met Jackson on the set of John Singleton’s classic 1993 film Poetic Justice, where he played her boyfriend at the beginning of the film. Four years later, they collaborated on the smash hit “Got ‘Til It’s Gone.”

“We started dating after that,” Tip said in a 2021 interview with Math Hoffa. “It be cool and shit. She be making eggs and shit and I’ll be chilling like, ‘Yo, that’s Penny!’ to myself. I love her to death and she’s a Jackson — that’s Black royalty.”

Prior to his birthday, Q-Tip was mourning the loss of a beloved musician.

The rapper/producer was one of many who paid tribute to saxophonist Casey Benjamin, who died in late March at the age of 45. His brother, Kevin, revealed that his cause of death was pulmonary thromboembolism.
