Ever since Jay-Z and Nas took their beef to wax in 2001, Hip Hop fans and emcees alike have endlessly debated who won the battle.
The debate continues, as Jadakiss and Kendrick Lamar took opposing sides of the debate for VIBE.com.
“I didn’t really like the ‘Takeover’ beat,” admitted Jadakiss. “But the words—you know what the words are! It’s like the Declaration of Independence on the battle tip. What he’s saying is crazy. I like the laaaaayyyyymmmmme part. It was heavy, but Nas’ ‘Ether’ sits on the mantle when it comes to battle songs.”
Kiss added that “Ether” gets an “A-Plus grade.”
Kendrick Lamar, however, took Jay-Z’s corner in the debate. “Truthfully, I felt like everybody wanted to go against Jay-Z because Nas was the underdog. But I was riding with Jay because he was saying more facts. ‘Ether’ was powerful, but I always thought Jay had the upper hand.”

Some of you are just plain stupid or just plain dickriders. Jay didn’t resurrect Nas’ career. By the time Stillmatic dropped, ALL of Nas’ albums were solo, including The Firm album, and he had put out a QB compilation album that went gold and had a hit single. Also, Takeover was not more factual. Most of that verse was just Jay-Z’s subjective viewpoint of Nas career. It Was Written was damn near classic and I Am was solid, prolly woulda been near classic had it come out as the double disc it was intended as. To me it was a tie ’cause neither one of these songs ended anybody’s career.

Jay lost this battle and if you cant admit it then all that means is that, YOU CANT ADMIT IT because it doesnt change the way it has gone down in history, as an “L” for Jay.
Nas did win this battle… For all the reasons that have been fielded here:
1. Jay got a bit too cocky after the response Takeover got, and instead on delivering the final blow, turned his back on his opponent and under estimated him
2. Nas’ career before or at the time when Takeover came out had taken a serious hit with the negative response to Nastradamus… He was on his way out. The fact that the ‘beef’ revitalized his career and catapulted him to a spot higher that Jay… That was a winner
3. Lyrically, Jay summarized Nas’ career, and thought that would be enough to put all into perspective. Good move, but then if he had included all the stuff he said in Super Ugly in Takeover, I believe Nas wouldn’t have bounced back
4. Tied to the above, Jay kept it strictly business and wanted to hurt Nas the rapper, good sportsmanship, but Nas upped the ante and went at jay the individual. It got personal, and that gave Nas the upper hand. Wanting to raise the bar even further, Jay released Super Ugly, but that was a little too late, it sounded desperate and was sooo nasty Jay’s mama asked him to apologize, GAME OVER.
5. This was not two giants going at it, Nas was clearly the underdog here. Jay was reaching his prime, and Nas was near washed up at this point. But like Jordan, he released ‘STILLmatic’ and proved to the world, and Jay that he was still worthy of the crown…
6. Jay admitted defeat. I know it, you know it, even he knows it… Anyone who chooses to say otherwise is clearly biased…
7. His camp admitted it… I know it, you know it, Jay knows it… Anyone who chooses to say otherwise is clearly biased…
8. New York voted… Nas was declared winner, and anyone who says it was something that should’ve been carried out with a larger pool clearly does not understand that the king of NYC was being crowned here, and Nas was declared king, by his people…
9. The hip hop world knows that it was impossible to come back from a diss verse like the one on Takeover… Jay did state facts, we all knew it… However, just to come back from that to that level can only be compared to Ali beating Foreman in Kinshasa (D.R.C). So just for that, Nas won…
10. Jay Z is still trying to be like Nas… he may have all the money, but his credibility as a lyricist has not been solidified yet. Nas is a true lyrical icon whose name has been engraved throughout time with the legends. Jay is exceptional, but still has that Biggie complex. He’s still in the shadow of a dead man…
Note that this is my opinion, so I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. I listen to The Blueprint more that I listen to STILLmatic, but I also listen to I am… more than I listen to The Life and Times of Shawn Carter.. I think in the end, it was a great battle because the two compliment themselves. Nas holds the streets and stays true to his rap roots, while Jay will always look for what’s hot and be that, so as to stay relevant, just as he has done.

First off, Nas never slaughtered ANYONE. It wasn’t a slaughter, no one was saying that back then. It also wasn’t a lop sided win either. And Nas was NOT the underdog. Niggas was choosing him over Jay-Z from the beginning because he had been in the game for so long and Jay was looked at like the young cocky kid disrespecting his elder. Jay NEVER tried to be like Nas, the beef was over who was going to takeover as King of NY after Biggie died, the whole beef was about being like Biggie. Both of them wanted that spot. The beef was WAY more than Takeover and Ether, you niggas talkin like the beef was only 2 songs long. The truth is that Nas was getting DESTROYED for a minute, and everyone knew this. Most people were actually rooting for Nas from the get go, but Jay-Z was serving him up. Why do you think the only diss people remember from Nas is Ether? You niggas sayin Jay-Z ain’t shit and can’t rap and can’t see Nas are just kids who don’t know shit about hip-hop or this battle. Jay proved himself in this battle. You got some facts in your comments and I read some bullshit in there as well. For one, Stillmatic the album (including the Jay-Z diss) did resurrect Nas’s career, that album was solid and it went platinum.
I’m definitely old enough to remember that battle, but I don’t agree with most of the shit you said.
You’re saying Nas’s career was already over before that beef, but he previous album to Stillmatic was Platinum (Nastradamus) and before that it was I Am which was 2x Platinum.
Both of those albums dropped in 99, he waited 2 years and dropped Stillmatic.
When ever album you’ve put out up to that point has been platinum or more, your career is far from over.
Plus, your trying to say his career was over because Illmatic was his only classic album. It Was Written and I Am were both incredible albums, but when you’ve already dropped what is viewed as the best hip hop album EVER, it’s hard to go up from there. Like I already pointed out, every album between Illmatic and Stillmatic was Platinum or better, so I don’t see how his career was ‘over’.
Also, your saying Jay was looked at as the young cocky kid who disrespected his elder: Jay is 4 years older than Nas. There was only a 2 year difference between Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt coming out.

Nas threw a shot a Jay on “Stillmatic” freestyle that wasn’t recieved well by fans, then Jay responded back with Takeover. Takeover devastated Nas fans back then and they thought his career was over. Nas beat him in the battle with responding back with ether. So Jay won the first round and Nas got the second. People don’t realize Takeover was a response to the “Stillmatic” freestyle Nas put out directed towards Memphis Bleek and Jay. The beef bewteen those two occurred when Big was here. Big use to serve as a middleman for Nas and Jay about partnership in business.In 1996 Jay wanted to sign The Firm to Rocafella records not just Nas people. Nas who was the leader turned the offer down. Jay felt a certain way about that and it was tension between them since then. For the people saying Jay change his style after Nas and Biggie came out,of course he did because his flow at the time was not getting him a deal. Nas and Biggie flow and rhyme structure was what labels at the time wanted. So if something is not given you the result that you want, then you change whatever your doing to get that desired end. When Biggie past New York wanted Jay to step up to take the crow because he was a talented MC and repping Brooklyn like Biggie. Besides it would be who Biggie would of wanted to take his place, since him and Nas had a little beef.

The article at hand is who won the battle of the Nas/Jay-Z beef… Nas won without question, which is why so many Jay fans are so irate and disillusioned with their comments.
Now the argument of whose the better emcee is completely separate… that title also goes to Nas. First off, people wanna say how “Takeover” and “Super Ugly” were filled with so many facts, which they were (but as to imply that “Ether” wasn’t), but just analyze the single line of many factual ones within the track in, “Name a rapper that I ain’t influenced”… the legends paid/pay great homage to Nas… Pac’s “Me And My Girlfriend” was directly influenced by Nas’ “I Gave You Power”, Biggie’s idea of the “Ready To Die” album cover with his baby photo being there was inspired by Nas’ “Illmatic” in which Nas used a picture of his youth, Rakim even gave Nas his props as an elite emcee (no better glory then when a teacher esteems his student), Jadakiss included Nas in her own personal top 5… along with Pac, Biggie, and himself, Killah Priest (the most underrated emcee on the planet) stated that Nas and himself are both top 5, dead or alive in a collaboration track “Crime Cardinals”. I can go on and on, but it’d be unnecessary. But no matter how many facts I just stated in this comment, people are gonna respond with negativity just because Jay-Z’s POPULARITY outshines Nasty Nas’. Just my take or personal opinion regarding the topic of whose the better EMCEE, not the most popular, not the most commercially successful, not the most record selling artist, BUT WHOSE THE BETTER EMCEE.

Neither one of them is better than other really. Jay-Z is about maintaining and gaining success and creating black wealth. Nas is about social commentary and ghetto community activism. It really depends who you relate to more. I’m a business-minded person driven for success so I gravitate to Jay more. Nas is very poetically abstract and one of hip hop’s greatest cautionary tale storytellers. Lyrically none is superior than the other if you listen to both of their catalogs and unreleased tracks. Jay can be just as thought-provoking as Nas and Nas can be just as commercial as Jay. I like Jay for his wordplay and double/triple entendres that you won’t get for days. I like Nas for his extensive vocab and storytelling abilities that touch your soul. 3. Lyrically, Jay summarized Nas’ career, and thought that would be enough to put all into perspective. Good move, but then if he had included all the stuff he said in Super Ugly in Takeover, I believe Nas wouldn’t have bounced back

Hov has Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, two undisputed classics. Five if you ask me if you add The Black Album, American Gangster and Watch the Throne. And look at who is more relevant. Nobody has had the relevance and longevity that he has had. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Ether was magnificent, but Hov had the upper hand because what he was saying was factual and realer. But it’s all about opinions. Nobody can really say who won. But in my opinion, Hov did. Sorry.
First off, anyone who thinks ether is better than takeover is wrong and I’ll tell you why. Ether is full of homophobic references, but disregarding these blatantly political offensive lyrics, they do not make sense. Think about it. Is Jay-Z gay? Not only is he not, he is hitting Beyonce. These references to Jay-Z’s sexuality make up a major theme of the song, but they are pointless. At one point in the song he actually says “cockafella”. I honestly wonder if they thought that was clever when he wrote it, because to me it sounds like something a 1st grader would say and laugh about. I do like the line: “I got this, locked since ‘9-1 I am the truest, name a rapper that I ain’t influenced.” Additionally, the song is ripe with inaccurate statements. For instance, KRS did not make an album called Blueprint, it was called Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop. The damn word isn’t even in the main title, its in the secondary title. Also, Rockefeller did not die of AIDs so he really sounds like an idiot when he says that. Nelson Rockefeller (namesake of Rockefeller Plaza) was Vice President of the United States and a Billionaire, so that line was stupid. Honestly, how cares what Jay-Z looks like, look at his wife.
Nas has one good line: “Eminem murdered you on your own shit”. That is true, but that sound was amazing so it doesn’t matter. Eminem did better, but it wasn’t like Jay-Z did bad. Its like “Forever” with the exception of Kanye West, every rapper was amazing on that song, but Eminem was far better.
Takeover
First, Jay-Z didn’t even spend the whole song talking about Nas, whereas Nas spent the whole song on Jay-Z. This is important because we have to consider lines not directed at Nas like: “little fucks I got money stacks bigger than you.”

What is good about this is that Jay-Z, even says Illmatic was a good album. He is being fair and giving credit where credit is due. But he is right, Illmatic is a great album, but it is Nas’ only great album.
There is more reasons but honestly listen to the song. Ether is dated, whereas Takeover isn’t.

This is a no win argument. It can never be objective either. There are Nas rap fans and Jay rap fans, and it’s unfortunate that they are mostly mutually exclusive. I am a fan of both, but I choose Nas over Jay. Always have, even before the battle. Now when it comes to the actual battle, I was shocked that Nas came back and eviscerated that hurt that Jay put on him with Takeover. I didn’t believe it could be done. Infact, the fact we are still talking about it today is more to Nas’s credit than it is to Jay, because had Jay delivered the killer blow, there would have been no Ether, and had Ether been subpar, there would have been no controversy about who won. It just turns out that folks actually voted and Nas got a split decision, and wounded Jay’s pride so bad Jay came back with Superugly, a posse cut nobody really cares to remember, except for its extreme content and overcompensation. Nas didn’t need to respond to it, because he only made one song that became a hip-hop VERB on its own. If I could, I could ETHER any more debate about who won, because there is only one record of who won and it lingers to this day. The rest is just rap fans who are still not over the shock.
The procution on “Ether” is garbage and the lyrics are so hilariously childish a five year old could’ve easily written them. But since that’s what Rap music fans seem to like, as opposed to mature and factual lyrics, it will always be considered the best song out of the two.
