Jadakiss, Kendrick Lamar Debate Winner Of Jay-Z/Nas Battle

Ever since Jay-Z and Nas took their beef to wax in 2001, Hip Hop fans and emcees alike have endlessly debated who won the battle.

The debate continues, as Jadakiss and Kendrick Lamar took opposing sides of the debate for VIBE.com.

I didn’t really like the ‘Takeover’ beat,” admitted Jadakiss. “But the words—you know what the words are! It’s like the Declaration of Independence on the battle tip. What he’s saying is crazy. I like the laaaaayyyyymmmmme part. It was heavy, but Nas’ ‘Ether’ sits on the mantle when it comes to battle songs.”

Kiss added that “Ether” gets an “A-Plus grade.”

Kendrick Lamar, however, took Jay-Z’s corner in the debate. “Truthfully, I felt like everybody wanted to go against Jay-Z because Nas was the underdog. But I was riding with Jay because he was saying more facts. ‘Ether’ was powerful, but I always thought Jay had the upper hand.”

    1. Nas won the battle but Jay won the war. NAS turned into Jay Z little man he had to go to Def jam to do a deal he was finished @ Columbia Jay Z executive produced that album and gave that sucka his release date. Lame ass Nas had to have his album critiqued by Jayz before it would come out thats why Kanye did like 4 songs Hov ate off the production budget with Kanye lmao!!

    2. I always thought Takeover was better

Jay was stating facts on that record

Nas was yelling childlike playground insults like “Gay-Z” and “Cockafella Records” lol

People just rooted for nas because they wanted to root against Jay, bottom line

      1. same here bro! thought jay had the slight advantage but dont get me wrong those two are my faves. wouldnt knw who to choose if i had too lol

      2. Nas was saying a lot of facts too….jay rhyming like fu schickens, having his face in foxys pussy, him tryna be like biggie, etc. listen harder

      3. shut up! nas was stating facts on ether too.jay z been on nas dick since illmatic.jay z was that fast rapper and immediately illmatic dropped he slows down his flow.jigga bites bigs rhymes fact, jigga is a nas stan fact jigga got big lips fact jiggas moms even knew her son was murdered fact. if takeover was better why did jay rush to record that supa ugly bullshit

      4. Nass facts gossip sounding jays sound way more real like go play somewhere I’m busy, I showed ur first tech on tour with large professor now I heard ya song about ur tech on ya dresser, lmao twinkletoes u breaking my heart.

    3. Takeover > Ether

This is what a battle should be. Strictly on wax and debates on who made the better track. We dont care who got the most guns, swag, or money keep it about the music.

      1. Im not joking at all, the problem is that yall putting the artist before the music. People who like nas more will vote for ether. I actually like nas better but when you look at the songs jay-z took it. The takeover beat was harder (sounded like some battle shit) and the lyrics were more personal and witty compared to nas lyrics.

      2. Ether is little overrated in my opinion and this is coming from a Nas fan. Jay came at him from a fan’s point view, because I was getting fed up with Nas’s lackluster albums after “Illmatic” and “It Was Written”. I think Nas is lyrically better than Jay don’t get me wrong. I think Jay got the slight edge with Takeover, because Large Professor and Mc Serch confirmed what Jay said was true.

      1. I hope u r not one of those ignoramuses dat think jay owns defjam? he was just another appointee n if u dnt knw his contract was not renewed cos of his poor performance in office. Ether is d blueprint for diss records, fact.

    4. Why even reference Nas signing to Jay? That was mad years later.. True, Jay won the war. But Nas roasted his ass in the battle… Anyone from the town remembers when Hot 97 had a vote, even rappers were callin in givin Nas the W… They both did their thing, but Jay got ethered

      1. Yea to bad ether didn’t have one fact in it minus jay getting beat by em on his own shit and large professors already stated jay showed nas his first tech on tour in dc..and nas has gotten beat on his own shit by ooh I dunno everyone including jay several times? Lol ur comment just got etherd.

    5. But jadakiss needs to stop smoking weed/poppin xanex beccause he sounds like an idiot in every interview…like ur a grown ass man and u guna be high not making sense in every interview still? love kiss but damn

    6. why are we still talking bout this. nas won end of. jay has always been more hip hop/ pop and makes records for the radio where as nas tried it and didnt like it and has stayed in his lane doing him and keeping it real.

    7. shut up! nas was stating facts on ether too.jay z been on nas dick since illmatic.jay z was that fast rapper and immediately illmatic dropped he slows down his flow.jigga bites bigs rhymes fact, jigga is a nas stan fact jigga got big lips fact jiggas moms even knew her son was murdered fact. if takeover was better why did jay rush to record that supa ugly bullshit after he was ethered

    8. its not even close when jay is telling u yea i took ur track made hotter than urs and u couldnt do shit about it and its true its over and dont forget is that ur bitch is directed at nas too

      1. He sampled a couple of words so what….Illmatic is stiil better than reasonable doubt or any of Gay-Z’s Albums!!!

      2. Hahaha, u really think jay made a Nas line from Illmatic (World is yours) n made it a hot song? stanning of the highest order.

    9. fact: jay-z spit one verse about nas on takeover, nas made the entire ether about jay-z…fact: everything jay-z said in takeover was true, nas on ether nigga do he even know who rockafeller was? how the man died of aids? gtf then the nigga used a tupac intro pac went at his ass the hardest besides from biggie…

      1. Talkin about fact like you know Jay…Fact is Jay changed styles and was always on Nas’s Nuts and got mad because he wouldn’t do tracks with him….Nas Clearly Beat Gay-Z and the ROC DOLO!!!!!

    10. it’s a BATTLE people. imagine both men were on stage holding mics in their hands and kicked their perspective verses. which one would get the ooohhhs, ahhhhs, of the crowd in the end and pronounced winner? NAS’s Ether did it.

K.Lamar possibly suggestin Jay cause Rocawear cut him a check before.

      1. Cosignee, Ether is d blueprint for a diss record not takeover or super ugly or wateverr. These stans keep talking abt facts dat aint thr, oh cos jay said mean its tru? fucking sheeps.

    11. Is this some political ploy to give credit to Jay-Z for not battling lil Wayne? Whether intentional or unintentional, chronologically it seems suspicious.

    12. Takeover. It was a lot better as a whole, people take all those points Jay made if they criticize Nas. Nas had a few funny lines, but that weren’t good at all. So, Jay’s ugly. First off: Who cares about this? Second: What is the point if he has the ”hottest chick in the game wearing his chain”? ”Eminem murdered you on your on shit” holds no weight, it’s a lot better to be outshined by a lyrical heavyweight than being outshined by your own bodyguard. Also, this diss ain’t valid, because you didn’t have a song with Eminem where you proved yourself and showed the world that you managed to not getting outclassed. The whole point of Ether seemed, somebody already said it, like playground insults. Jay said too many things on Takeover that were true and hit way harder than all the shit Nas said. Nas himself proved that with Stillmatic. To be honest, I expected way more from Nas, it was just so dull to hear all those things from him that could be easily turned around. Ether is for the guys who like insults, who talk about all this gossip shit, Takeover was nothing but facts. And if you favor that disrespect shit, Supa Ugly came waaaay harder at Nas than Ether at Jay. People rooted for Nas because they saw the streets in him and the industry in Jay. Kendrick made a legit point there.

      1. Man, i couldnt agree with you more..everything jay said was facts and he made it personal. Ether was like playing the “dozens’

      2. A very good arguement. I wouldn’t say Takeover was better then Ether but to say Ether was 100x better like alot of NaS stans imply is a bit crazy.. I’d say Takeover BP2 and Ether are arguably equals. And this is comin from someone who thinks NaS is the better MC.

    13. wayne ?? haha for what and takeover was better facts will always beat out jokes wayne not gonna kidnapp a damn thing but cashmony lmao do have money problems and also baby money nas said some funny shit in eather thats about it and with the super ugly song i dont see how nas won then he goes to def jam so who won?

    14. either was a comedy sketch i think yall need to listen again nas was getting jerked for his publishing and jay crossed the line with super ugly his mother told him that was going to far but hey carmens a slut who knew?

    15. I really think people underestimated Jays verse, but still, Nas took that one in my opinion. This debate will NEVER die. lol It was a good moment for Hip Hop, though. No one got shot. Just straight bars and grillin each other.

    16. Ether bein best diss record almost ever (50 cent’s Piggy Bank gotta be up there)..Jay had good disses too but Nas got him on Ether w/da beat and jus everything & also on H to the OMO

    17. man JAY Z fans are such fucking fags.
i mean the ones who’ve posted here at least

you guys like that voice huh? HIS voice is more annoying then a jewish mom calling her son up for dinner.

and NAS’ voice? is the smoothest thing in this game

and his lyrical content is 100% above GAY Z

fuck you NAS haters.. wait till LIFE IS GOOD
we gonna show you what a classic looks like

      1. Nas is not 100% above Jay-Z just because he spits about pan-african studies. Jay can be a mental and spiritual guru at times, just listen to “Beach Chair”, “Most Kingz” ,”History”, “So Ambitious” ,”Can I Live”,”Meet The Parents” etc. Then he can turn around and hit you with pop hits and hood bangers. Nas has never been able to balance commerical and street shit in his career, but his tried to no avail. Stop that bullshit about Nas keeping it real, if he is why does he want to do tracks with lil wayne and drake for his next album? Jay is a better hip hop artist period because he’s more versatile than Nas.

      2. Cosigning “takenasdickoutyourmouth”. Nas will never be the best because he’s not consistent. Most of his albums sucked. Most of his songs sucked. One hot album every 10 year average

      3. Nas better than Jay lyrically? Hahahahahahaha, he’s way easier to get, but that’s about it. Just because he talks about being poor while looking outta a project window on a rainy day where he hears gunshots, doesn’t make him one bit better. Jay at his worst is better than Nas ever was. The Grammy Family freestyle shits on everything Nas did in this decade combined.

”They say a midget standin on the giant’s shoulder can see much

And I’ll prove who’s the illest, so Hate Me Now

      Nas got fucked by everyone.

    19. Takeover was very good. Alot of facts were said about Nas, but people seem to forget that Ether was THE RESPONSE track and when the dust settled, Nas won, which is something Jay has admitted himself.

By the way, if you completely ignore the insults, there’s alot of facts Nas alluded to which apparently flew over alot of people’s heads.

    20. Jay z had to apologize to Nas so Nas clearly won. Nas made even fun of him with lines like Life’s hard Hug me. And I dont know what people have with takeover, I never liked it. Maybe it was the beat or the way Jay rapped. It didnt sounded as he wanted to go in maybe thats the reason he doesnt respond anymore to other rappers.

      1. He doesn’t respond?? You need to listen to “Dig a Hole”,””Brooklyn High Balling Remix” smashing dipset and dame dash. “Watch what U Say” which he killed lil wayne on that joint. Jay has to many niggas taking shots at him, so he can’t respond to all directly, he just sends general shots to them all. Jay’s mom made him apologize to Nas because of the bars about Carmen and Destiny. Jay still till this day feels like he one that battle. Takeover was hot because he came at Nas from a discontent Nas fan’s point of view.

      1. Karma has nothing to do with it, it’s hip hop and hip hop is competitive. Look at Eminem, he has been dissed by Benzino and Ja Rule and Lil Wayne had some slick talk. I thought that Jay won the battle too. The takeover was just facts, that’s what made that shit hurt…Either was like a bounce of jokes, it was hot no doubt but the truth always hits harder than fiction. Saying you 36 in a karate class and calling him J J evens was funny as hell but to break down a dudes career, telling how futile it’s been and to be accurate with it…that shit hurts

    21. Jada is right, ETHER took it. Only other diss songs on that level are Hit em up, second round K.O. and 300 bars n runnin’ foreal. Jay even admitted he lost, so how would he have won. Jay got bodied on Ether, you can’t fuck with Nas…

      1. Jay never admitted he lost, listen to the interviews where they ask him about it. People just turned on him during the battle because he was the top dog in rap, and was too mainstream.

    22. Who cares what jadakiss thinks he is a ninja turtle anyways. Jay Z won this battle by default because nas is a homo. Think about how their careers have gone since the battle. nas even ended up signing under Jay and nas also took L after L in his personal life while hov keeps winning. Its no secret who won that battle. Its not the dude who is paying child support to kelis. nas stans can lie to themselves forever but facts is facts.

    23. anyone who thinks nas lost, it’s called “ethered” when you destroy someone in a rap song, not “takeovered”

    24. LOOK NAS IS A BETTER EMCEE I JAM HIM ALL THE TIME BUT GAY-Z HIT NAS WITH SOME FACTS LIKE CALLING HIM OUT ON THE BABY MOMMA DRAMA AND TAKING SHOTS AT HIS WHOLE LIFE STYLE I MEAN THAT’S COLD IM SURPRISED THIS BEEF STAYED ON WAX BUT COOL HEADS COME THRU I GUESS SO TO ME I DONT THINK WAS A REAL WINNER EVEN THOUGH ETHER WAS ONE OF THE BEST DISS SONG OF ALL TIME THIS MADE ME THINK WHATS BEEF IN THIS INDUSTRY CUSS BOTH RAPPERS ARE STILL HERE MAKING MONEY STILL HAVE THERE FAME SO JUST BECAUSE I THINK GAY-Z MUSIC IS TRASH DOES NOT MEAN HE STILL HAS A FAN BASE

    25. okay look this is final nas won the battle, nas is the better mc by a long shot and is real while jay z is a biter and fake, there yu have it.

      1. Nas borrowed lines from Biggie to and he even admits on Biggie’s documentary on youtube. How many rap niggas done bit of Jay-Z to use him for choruses on there songs? The answer is a lot and let’s not mention all those who have quoted him in there rhymes. All emcees borrow lines from other rappers idiot. Takeover was a better battle record but Ether was a better diss.

      2. Nas the better MC? I guess that’s the reason he got outshined by every decent rapper he was on a track with? Jay destroyed him with ease on ”Black Republican” and ”Success”. The only reason you fools rate Nas higher is because he doesn’t sell as much and isn’t that popular. You fools eqaute flops with quality. Low sales suggest quality for you. The lower the sales, the better you people make an album out to be. Jay has a faaaar better flow, he’s able to adapt to almost every beat out there, no matter how diverse they are, has better punchlines by far, waaay more double-entendres and much better rhymes and shit that’s way harder to get, because it has so much depth.

”They say a midget standin on the giant’s shoulder can see much
further than the giant.. (the giant..)
So I got the WHOLE rap world on my shoulder they tryin to see
further than I am.. (than I am..)
And I have been tryin to be patient with they preoccupation
        with David and Goliath.. (Goliath..)
But sooner or later, that patience gonna run it’s course
and I’m forced to be a tyrant.. (be a tyrant..)
But bein tyrant, comin through your environment
Iron mask, nigga iron gas, nigga I am back”

”Can’t touch the untouchable, break the unbreakable
Shake the unshakeable (it’s Hovi baby)
Can’t see the unseeable, reach the unreachable
Do the impossible (it’s Hovi baby)

Can’t move the unmoveable, stop the unstoppable..”

”I’m so far ahead of my time, I’m bout to start another life
Look behind you, I’m bout to pass you twice
Back to the future and gotta slow up for the present
I’m fast, niggaz can’t get past my past
How they propose to deal with my perfect present?
When I unwrap “The Gift & the Curse” in one session
Ain’t no livin person can test him
Only two restin in heaven can be mentioned in the same breath as him
Seven straight summers, critics might not admit it”

”I Jack, I rob, I sin, Ah man, I’m Jackie Robinson, except when I run base, I dodge the pen.”

How can Nas be better, when Jay dropped a freestyle that has more lyrical prowess, complexity, depth and substance than all of Nas’ albums put together?

”Inspired by Basquiat, my chariot’s on fire
Everybody took shots, hit my body up, I’m tired
Build me up, break me down to build me up again
They like, “Hov we need you back so we can kill your ass again”
Hov got flow though he’s no Big and Pac, but he’s close
How I’m ‘posed to win? They got me fighting ghosts”

”Same sword they knight you they gon’ good night you with
Sh.., Thats’ only half if they like you
That ain’t even the half what they might do
        Don’t believe me, ask Michael
        See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
        See success is like suicide
        Suicide, it’s a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified
Media meddles, niggas sue you, you settle
Every step you take, they remind you you ghetto
So it’s tough being Bobby Brown
To be Bobby then, you gotta be Bobby now
Now the question is, “Is to have had and lost
Better than not having at [all]?”

Everybody wanna be the King then shots ring
You laying on your balcony with holes in your dream
Or you Malcolm X’d out, get distracted by screams
Everybody get your hand off my jeans!”

”Everybody wanna be the King then shots ring
You laying on your balcony with holes in your dream
Or you Malcolm X’d out, get distracted by screams
Everybody get your hand off my jeans!
Everybody look at you strange, say you changed
Uhh! Like you work that hard to stay the same
Uhh! Game stays the same, the name changes
So its best for those to not overdose on being famous
Most kings get driven so insane
That they try to hit the same vein that Kurt Cobain did
        No dangers, so shameless
Invited to the inner sanctum of your chambers
Low chain ’em as the enemies approach
So raise your draw bridge and drown them in the moat
        And the Spirit I’m evoking”

”Everybody screaming they want the old Hov
But the new improved Hov hit like Albert Pujols
Everybody wanna hear me talk that money like Phil Rizzuto
But my mind is on Pluto
Bills that I do fold, I now invest on
Trying to find some loopholes in the IRS
As where I used to have a few hoes I am just
Concentrating on making a new Hov through sex
I’ve awakened just in time to school those putos
Trying to follow in my shoes with jewels froze
Better adhere to this text ‘fore you go
Broke, spending more than you’ve accrued on silly baguettes
I know silly begets silly you’ll learn on your own
At least my conscience is clear, I’m no longer steering you wrong
Ain’t nothing wrong with baguettes after you get a home
Take care of your home, you can go back home”

”Please may these words be recorded
To serve as testimony that I saw it all before it
Came to fruition, sort of a premonition
        Uncontrollable hustler’s ambition”

        ”Alias Superstition, like Stevie
The writing’s on the wall like my lady, right baby?
Saw it all before — some of y’all thought I was crazy — maybe
Like a fox I’m cagey, Ah Ah!
The more successful, the more stressful
The more and more I transform to Gordon Gekko
In the race to a billion got my face to the ceiling
Got my knees on the floor please Lord forgive him
Has he lost his religion, is the greed gon’ get him?
He’s having heaven on earth, will his wings still fit him?
I got the Forbes on my living room floor
And I’m still talking to the poor, nigga I want more
        TIME’s most influential, was impressive
‘Specially since I wasn’t in the artist section
Had me with the builders and the titans
Had me right with Rupert Murdoch
Billionaire boys and some dudes you never heard of
Word up on Madison Ave is I’m a cash cow
Word down on Wall Street, homie, you get the cash out
IPO Hov, no need for reverse merger
The boy money talk no need to converse further
The baby blue Maybach like I own Gerber
Boardroom I’m lifting ya skirt up”

Nas could NEVER come up with something like this, especially not in a freestyle, this shits on the whole rap game, no one has more finesse and is more witty than Jay. Nobody has his rap intelligence. He’s the true GOAT.

      3. @stfu, damn guy you all on jay z’s nuts huh? You got your jay z pom pom’s out haha! Shit get a life , I’m sure jay z would really give two shits if you all on his nuts, faggot. Dick in the booty azz nikka

      4. @ Anonymous
damn guy you all on jay z’s nuts huh? You got your jay z pom pom’s out haha! Shit get a life , I’m sure jay z would really give two shits if you all on his nuts, faggot. Dick in the booty azz nikka.

      5. you bitch ass nigga ican name a 1000 nas verses, he is the most intellectual versatile and by far greatest lyricist ever so don’t even try bring up those old recyled jay z verses you fagget nas is the better mc with the best album with the best diss, case closed

    26. in my opinion i dont think it should be Ether vs Take over..
i think it should be Blueprint 2 (the song) vs ether.. thats such a better diss track than Take over imo…

some one said jay didnt respond after ether.. adn thats exactly wat the BP2 song was??? dont u remember?
idk they both good artist.. jay is better by a long shot…and i feel bp2 song was better then ether.. so i give it too jay…

“And y’all buy the shit, caught up in the hype
Cause the nigga wear a coofie, it don’t mean that he bright
Cause you don’t understand him, it don’t mean that he nice
It just means you don’t understand all the bullshit that he write
Is it “Oochie Wally Wally” or is it “One Mic”?
Is it “Black Girl Lost” or shorty owe you for ice?
I’ve been real all my life, they confuse it with conceit
Since I will not lose, they try to help him cheat
But I will not lose, for even in defeat
There’s a valuable lesson learned, so it evens it up for me”

“You’re an actor, you’re not who you’re depicted to be
The street dreamin, all y’all niggas living through me
I gave you life when niggas was forgetting you emcee
I’m a legend, you should take a picture with me
You should be happy to be in my presence, I should charge you a fee
I’m Big Dog, Glenn Rob, listen God you a flea
And the little homey Jungle is a garden to me”

      nuff said… hov

    27. Kendrick should be slapped for this lmao…”Jay had the facts”…so you’re saying Nas didn’t have any facts in Ether? please. Nas went in on Hov. both are in my top 5 of all time but Nas was just ruthless. Jay did get him with the baby mama shit but i mean she was a industry hoe lol…not much t brag about. and Nas didn’t have kilos like pablo escobar but he did nickel and dime. Nas had hella facts about Hov too…Nas had a HUGE influence on Jay-Z as an artist. You can tell because of how Jay-z’s lyricism and flow changed around reasonable doubt..hint (after illmatic set trends of pure and new lyricism)…jay was rappin really fast and was witty and silly. amongst other things. NAS WON THE BATTLE AS A MC BUT JAY WON CAREER WISE.

    28. I think J won the battle… Takeover beat was ill and he only gave Nas a few bars but atleast they were all factual. Nas’ Ether was crazy but i think people give Nas alot of credit simply because he responded to Jay, his lines weren’t factual he was just talking about Jay. Then another point is people forget about “Blueprint 2” and “Super Ugly” Jay destoyed Nas on them joints as well and again spitting factual lines. Having said all of that Ether was still crazy, but like KRS-1 said “the more facts you can incorporate into a diss the better it is”

    29. They shooting but nobody’s dying
Somebody betta put some bodies on somebody’s iron either that or somebody’s(some bodies) lying- “PSA” remix

Hov is to ill to be fucked with

    30. you jay-z fans are lame.
we do not like NAS better because he sells less fool. we like NAS better because he IS better.

how can you stand that voice? jay-z’s voice is horrible

    31. Nas has a far greater mind with much more knowledge and understanding than Jay. Jay was a slick rapper with some word play but nowhere near Nas’s level of rhyming and descriptive story telling which always has depth and meaning also showing the morale.

either has proven throughout the years to be flawless, and still is a bump in Jays side. while “Takover” was a record that woke a nigga up to, another nigga really TRYING to steal his spot!

      1. I wouldn’t say Nas has greater knowledge than Jay. Did you read Decoded? Jay has a lot of superior knowledge that people are not aware of. Listen to Jay is like business class 101 and I’ve utilize plenty of philosophy jewels from Jay to advance my business. Can’t say the same for Nas.

      2. @i wouldn’t go that far

yeah so what you just sounded like a fool. jay may be a better business man, but NAS is a better poet.. he’s a poet. before rap he wrote down pieces of art. nas can draw. nas is an artist.

so what jay is a better businessman
that’s not what this is about

who’s the better rapper who actually makes you press rewind and listen more than once to get the full meaning? that would be N A S I R

        just face it

jay z is good, but his voice ruins him
        he makes music for money
nas makes music for the people

      3. Who gives a fuck he’s a artist , Jay has said things that I live by and use on the daily when it comes to people spreading shit about me or just plain hating on my progress. That’s more important to me than some art bullshit.

    32. Jay-Z has an overall more successful career then Nas and set out to do what he wanted to do since he stepped foot in the game on his own with Reasonable Doubt. He has accomplished what he wanted to do and more, whereas Nas hasn’t succeeded where he wanted to in his career. Please don’t say Jay is a sellout because he went so mainstream and Nas didn’t. No underground rapper what’s to stay underground, they all want to have Jay’s commercial success(including Nas) believe it or not. Even Celph-titled and Apathy said they wish to be successful mainstream artists someday. That’s like a basketball player getting drafted to the NBA, talking about he doesn’t want to be in the limelight and he wants to stay second string. See how that shit don’t make sense? I would give Jay the slight edge on that battle because the last part of Superugly was just viscious lol

By the way never mention wayne’s name in the same breath as these two greats.

    33. fuQ UR chump we deal w/facts around here & the fact of the matter is NAS WON handsdown cut all dat bafoonery & coon sh!t out keep it real & stop bittin a$$ cos the n!99a got more money…..

    34. Mc Serch and Large Professor confesses that Jay could of destroyed Nas’s career because Takeover was factual. Nas had to comeback with ether or his career would’ve been done. Go watch Nas’s driven documentary if you think I’m making this shit up.

      1. Wats ur point? Ether was d better diss record whether it was a reply doesnt matter. Post us a link wr large pro n mc search said those things ie jay spit facts n nas non facts.

    35. some fool said we like Nas because he does’nt sell as much as Jay. These two are’nt even on the same level when it comes to mcing.

Yeah Jay was nice in his prime, but nas is a God mc, who touches on everything real with that microphone

      1. Really?? What the hell was “Oochie Wally”, “You owe me”,”You Won’t See Me Tonight”,”Doctor Knockboot”,”Favor for a Favor” then? Some real shit? I don’t think so homie.

    36. At the time Nas one. Ether had way more lyrical skill.

But just by the title of the song JayZ won overtime. Look what happened, Nas signed to Jay Z and therefore Jay “tookover” Nas’s career. And after Hip Hop is Dead, Nas died.

      1. U statement is flawed, Jay dont own defjam, he was just another employee albeit president whos contract was not renewed cos of poor performance, just gett that str8.

    37. (gotta repeat so i stay on top)
      @i wouldn’t go that far

yeah so what you just sounded like a fool. jay may be a better business man, but NAS is a better poet.. he’s a poet. before rap he wrote down pieces of art. nas can draw. nas is an artist.

so what jay is a better businessman
that’s not what this is about

who’s the better rapper who actually makes you press rewind and listen more than once to get the full meaning? that would be N A S I R

      just face it

jay z is good, but his voice ruins him
      he makes music for money
nas makes music for the people

    38. The last verse of ether is all facts. jay was all on nas dick. pleus nas one the battle blueprint 2 was just jay being a soar loser know one gave a fuck

    39. nas killed gay z with ether, no doubt about it…ether, hit em up and acknowledge by masta ace top 3 diss songs all time

    40. Jay Z resurrected Nas’s dead career with Take Over plain and simple. Nobody was checking for Nas at the time. And Nas is back in his stale mode again, while Jay is still hot. Take Over had memorable lines while Nas just cracked on him with some high school disses. Except for the Eminem “killed you on your own shit” line. That hurt.

      1. Nobody was checking for Nas? really? I Am Nastradamus n dropped in99/00 n were both multiplatinum albums, i wonder whr u stans come up with ur delusional statements from.

    41. When are yawl going to admit “Hip-Hop Is Dead” album was wack?

Illmatic was his best total effort. He had hot songs here and there afterwards.

    42. Ether is the blueprint for diss/battle records, fact. It had everthing dat makes lyricism; metaphors, punchlines, substance in lyrics, story telling, flow,n general wordplay n to crown it all a dope ass beat. Y’all nigga be saying ether was all jokes but apparently Jay didnt find it funny when ether dropped on hot97 n was almost crying n stuttering like a kid with anxiety disorder, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffDDbEJAEIg dat nigga got all emotional n mushy n rushed to record a song dissing Carmen whos was Nas’s ex instead of the target infront of him, apparently he thought sleeping with another niggas sloppy seconds will get him cool points, lmao.

    43. Ether was better because it addressed EVERYTHING. Takeover had no real substance it was just Jay’s opinion of Nas. The only real “fact” in it was the part about sleeping with his babies moms but who cares about that when Nas wasn’t even with her at the time? lol

      Here’s what Ether addressed
      -Hawian Sophine
-Dame/Jay trying to be like Puff/Big
-Jay’s line that said “Who’s the best mc, Jay-Z, Biggi and Nas” b4 the beef
      -Eminem out rapping him
-Nas called him “Stan” and was he first to use the word in that way
-The radio stituation where he apologized to Jadakiss and the lox
-Jay’s fame leeching from (Kane, Puff, Irv, Big)
-Jay riding Nas nuts (trying to get a feature, sampling his voice)
-His hatred for woman (he’s dissed them in the past and had that if of him shoving one)
-The Un stabbing (which no one believed he did)
      -Beanie being better then him
-Him taking martial arts and trying to be tough
-The fact that he doesn’t seem to grow facial hair
-Jay being under the house that Russel built (queens niggas run you niggas)
-Jay using Biggies rhymes constantly and claiming he’s better still
      -Jays huge lips
-The name Rocafella and how suspect it sounds “Rock-A-Fellow
-Jay’s ugliness (foxy got you hot…etc)
-Jay trying to be apart of Nas’ classics
      -Jay emulating his style
      -His attention whoring
-The fact that he looks like JJ and a camel
-How similar his name is to Jaz-O’s and how he stole his whole style
      etc

Ether was so good because it was soo detailed. Nas addressed everything except maybe Pun smacking Jay upside the head with the champagne bottle. lol Takeover doesn’t have enough substance or say have as much.

      1. No it wasn’t and Takeover was not a opinion all of it was facts. Large professor and Mc Serch confirmed Takeover already where the fuck have you been.

      2. Ether is d blueprint for a diss record. it stands for evrything lyrical; metaphors, punchline, substance in lyrics, story telling, flow, general wordplay n a dope ass beat.

    44. Point blank look at Nas’s career and life, it’s a fucking tragedy and Look at Hov’s life and career, it’s the ultimate culmination of the American Dream. Jay is married to a woman worth 300 mill and brings in more money than he does. Nas is indebted to a gold-digging talentless bitch Kelis. Judging by that alone it’s obvious who’s more intelligent than who. You can read a bunch of books and spit knowledge from it, but applying that knowledge is what seperates a genius from others. Jay reads books and put the knowledge he in-takes and applies it to his life.Nas is just plain lazy

      1. No we’re talking about the diss tracks not their careers you fag. Nas could be the biggest rapper if he wanted but he doesn’t give a fuck. Jay is greedy for money using it to overcompensate 4 his insecurity. For Nas life is good and he’s happy were he’s at. get off gayzs dick

      2. Must be the reason is doing tracks with wayne and drake now huh? All rappers are in the game for money don’t be naive. Jay said he was hustler from day one duh! What do hustlers do?? That’s right they hustle for more money Dumbass

    45. wow. what a bullshit article. were they even in the same room when they said these quotes? this wasn’t a debate at all. but anyways, Ether won the battle, but I’d rather listen to the Takeover cuz of the beat

    46. You know why ether was so good? I will tell you why not just the was lethal, it was because Nas put out illmatic and it was written two dope albums the others were not as good people saying nas fell of (never my opinion they were still dope albums) and then at the time jay z throwing rocks at him and in the other hand his mother was dying and in the other hand he had beef divorce breakup watever the fuk with his girl, Nas was never gonna hit back at Jay z, he felt he got bigger things to handle atm, Nas had his whole life being ripped apart, everyone saying jay z killed his career he aint coming back from this, THEN WHAT? HE SPITS FUKING ETHER AND RESSURECTS HIS CAREER HOW FUKING DOPE IS THAT??? THATS SOME FAIRYTALE SHIT!! NAS GOAT ENUFF SAID!!

    47. Jay is not better than Nas and Nas is not better than Jay. In reality of things they are both equal. They both have different mindsets for thier audience. Jay-Z is more about philosophy on business and success because he’s a lifetime hustler. Nas is more about philosophy on social commentary because he’s a lifetime abstract street poet. If you want to become an entreprenuer than Jay is the one you need to listen to ,but if you want to become a professor in philosophy and history then Nas is the one you need to listen to. They both rap about different subject matter and they have since day one. Take Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic for instance, RD came from the point of view of a successful street hustler and Illmatic came from the point of view of a observer growing up in the environment the street hustler left. So stop saying ones better than the other, it’s a matter of your taste and who you can relate too. I never been to the hood, but I’m majoring in entreprenuership so I relate to Jay more. Nas and Jay are both superb at what they do.

    48. No Matter who won, Jay is having a kid with B, Releasing a Classic ALbum with ‘Ye, and Getting money constantly.

And Nas…. Well At Least Keils is getting money…

    49. Some of you guys ride Nas dick because he’s not as successful as Jay in the mainstream. You feel like Jay betrayed the underground because he went commercial and became a pop icon. Get over it Jay always wanted to be commercially succesful even when he put out RD.

      1. nas has never been underground you stupid dumbass. you don’t know anything, then shut the fuck up

we like nas better because he is better

        WHO CAN STAND GAY-Z’s VOICE?

        Nas – for the poeple
        Jay – for the money

and you anonymous – for the dick

      2. Nas is for the ppl…please! Music is a business, he was/is in it for the money, he just did not make as much as Jay. There is no artist that is not into music for the money, if they were music would be free and it is not.

      1. Whys everyone bring up this line ?? when takeover came out first and jay talked about dude from bravehearts verse was better than nas and how he had the worst flow on the whole damn song but nas says basically the same thing and its so hot

    50. Why does every forget about Super Ugly! For the me the combination of Super Ugly and Takeover were better than Ether. That is why I think Jay won the battle.

    51. Even Jay’s own weed carrier and protege Memphis Bleek admitted to him that Nas won. They were both together when Ether dropped and were stunned. Both admitted that Ether was hot. On top of that, Jay was on the radio with Angie sounding like a kid who dropped his ice cream cone on the ground, stuttering and shit. He sounded defeated.

Here’s the interview Bleek did with allhiphop years ago speaking on his reaction to Ether….

      slumz.boxden.com/f87/feb-17-bleek-ether-gloomy-day-jay-saying-s-t-s-hot-860019/

    52. nas had the better track from a hip hop perspective with lyrics and disses but jay definitely won the beef overall he had more facts

    53. You jay stans are pathetic, how you goin to be on his dick so much when jay is rides nas’ dick. dude grew up wanting to be like nas and he was older. ether was a diss track, you guys complaining about facts, then go listen to last real niggas alive its not even a diss track just straight facts about the whole beef.

      1. Dumbass pac said alot more shit about nas cuz nas was hotter at the time.. so know what your talking about b4 you say some dumbshit

    54. Nas and Jay are both garbage. Jason freestyle over Ether is better than the original. Nas sucks weezy’s dick 24/7 which proves wayne is better. Jay-Z is a camel. Wayne sold more than both of these faggots combined.
      UMAD JAY-Z???? LMAO

      1. Wayne just started to sell records with the Carter III dumbass. Wayne has like only 11 million total albums sold to jay-z 100 millin. Sit down somewhere with that

    55. Rap became a version of Malcom and Martin
Rest In Peace Will, Queensbridge live on
There’s some ghetto secrets I can’t rhyme in this song
There’s some missing pieces I had to leave out
I had lot trust for Steve Stoute
At some point till I got to know him
We old friends, but what’s loyal?
      Puff soaked Interscope offices
With champagne bottles on Steve, and Steve thought the drama is on me
Cause previously it would have been, against whoever
      Friends forever
However, I learn, with some niggas it’s all business
But I’m a street dude with morals
To diss niggas with Jigga too much, he used to say Jay wanted my spot
I laughed, stayed home, never hung a lot
A quiet man who used to be alone planning
Baby moms thought I was too quiet, couldn’t stand it
She hit the streets, later on she hittin the sheets
With a rapper who wanted me on his songs, thinking he strong
I taught her how to watch for cars that might follow
Tauht her street shit that I know
      Her weakness was shine yo
But that’s her, I ain’t mad baby, it made me stronger
Now I get my paper longer
      Illmatic I was boss
      It Was Written I flossed
One of the most creative LPs ever to hit stores
In the Firm I learned I am Nastradamus
QB’s Finest, Oochie Wally, faced more problems
I gave it all up so I can chill at home with mama
She was getting old and sick so I stayed beside her
We had the best times, she asked would I make more songs
I told her not till I see her health get more strong
In the middle of that, Jay tried to sneak attack
Assasinate my character, degrade my hood
Cause in order for him to be the Don, Nas had to go
      The Gam-B-I-N-O rules I understood
What you want, see, I already had
The Gift and The Curse? Fuck that shit, the first shall be last
      I’m the man’s man, a rapper’s rapper
      G-O-D S-O-N, they’ll be none after
I was Scarface, Jay was Manolo
It hurt me when I had to kill him and his whole squad for dolo

      1. I’m the man’s man, a rapper’s rapper
        G-O-D S-O-N, they’ll be none after
I was Scarface, Jay was Manolo
It hurt me when I had to kill him and his whole squad for dolo

        HOLY SHITTTT

    56. What the fuck?! Isn’t it 2011, last time I checked? Ten years is plenty of time to pick a side, why the fuck keep it up? There are plenty of more valid emcees out now. I mean, I like both of these dudes, and I respect that they’re both still in the game after 15 and 20 years, but I can easily pick 5 more emcees that can definently compete with these dudes.

      1. Crooked I
      2. Eminem
      3. Tech N9ne
      4. Chamillionaire
      5. Joell Ortiz

I really enjoyed picking my number 5 spot; it was between Joell and Lupe Fiasco, but in the end I picked Ortiz cause he seemed more likely to win in a battle rap setting. I would have loved to put up a few other cats like – Jon Connor, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole, but ultimately I haven’t heard enough of their shit yet.

So who’s your 2011 pick for the GOAT? Are you still puttin up Rakim, Big L, Big Daddy Kane or KRS-One? Or do you have somebody a little more relevant for the 21st century?

      1. i hope you’re fucking joking dude, “Chamillionaire”? Are you fucking smoking crack? They see me rolling they hating? That’s lyrical to you? GTFO. Don’t post here.

      2. Tech n9ne really that wayne backer any body signed to roc nation would murder that dude including willow smith with her hair

      3. okay crooked I and tech n9ne you have a point on. Get the fuck out with eminem, chamillionaire and Ortiz. You must be living in the past if you think eminem is anywhere near the top. Last three albums have been horrible. Chamillionaire? really? He released a hot mistake if i can remember back in 2008 or 09 but he hasn’t put out anything off note since. Ortiz is average. If we are talking about the last five years I would have tech, crooked I, chino xl, fabulous and dare I say lil Wayne. He might be shit now but carter 2 and drought 3 were fire. His run up to carter 3 was also unlike any rapper and no ceilings was a great mixtape. I might hate him now but 2006-8 was a great run.

    57. you can go back and fourth with this forever but i wish wayne fans would stop saying jay-z cant fuck with him it sounds so stupid

    58. Some of you are just plain stupid or just plain dickriders. Jay didn’t resurrect Nas’ career. By the time Stillmatic dropped, ALL of Nas’ albums were solo, including The Firm album, and he had put out a QB compilation album that went gold and had a hit single. Also, Takeover was not more factual. Most of that verse was just Jay-Z’s subjective viewpoint of Nas career. It Was Written was damn near classic and I Am was solid, prolly woulda been near classic had it come out as the double disc it was intended as. To me it was a tie ’cause neither one of these songs ended anybody’s career.

      1. um It Was Written is a classic, not damn near, it is. That is fact. Every single fuckin track on that album was deep and well written and every lyric was masterfully executed by Nas and his guests.

    59. eminem did not kill jay z u idiots that verse was already laid out it was suppose to be em and royce 5’9 check for the song em has the same verse so jay z already knew what em was spitting he just didnt care thats what i think then all u ppl who dont know shit was like he got killed on his own shit bulshit

      1. u sir are retarded. a prerecorded verse that he couldnt match and you manage to do the logical calistenics to justify that with “i think he didn’t care”? lmao …actually fck you man

      2. Why the fuck would he put a song on his album that he “didn’t care” about? Not only did he get a track with Eminems verses already laid out… But still couldn’t touch him? The fuck out of here… I’m willing to bet that I heard the original Renegade with Royce before you were even born. Does it make you mad that most people that have heard both songs wished that the Royce and Em version would have hit shelves as opposed to the Jay and Em version? I bet it does huh?

    60. even though i like nas hes my number 2 fav at at the moment number 1 is jay z hes the goat face it ppl and to all the ppl who say he got murdered on his own track with em on it that shit was not the original track the original had royce the 5’9 and em on it and em gave it to jay to rhyme on it and so he already knew what em was saying on the track guess he didnt care too much for out rhyming him fuck u idiots who dont know shit

    61. even though i like nas hes my number 2 fav at at the moment number 1 is jay z hes the goat face it ppl and to all the ppl who say he got murdered on his own track with em on it that shit was not the original track the original had royce the 5’9 and em on it and em gave it to jay to rhyme on it and so he already knew what em was saying on the track guess he didnt care too much for out rhyming him fuck u idiots who dont know jack shit

      1. So Eminem GIVES him a track to put on HIS album, then proceeds to put together two weaker verses than Eminems? “em was saying on the track guess he didnt care too much for out rhyming him fuck u idiots who dont know jack shit”

Don’t know jack shit, yet you’re willing to state that your favorite rapper put a track on his album that he didn’t care too much for? I guess that seems about right given Jay-Z’s obvious lack of give a shit to his fans… Perhaps he just put the track he didn’t care too much for on their to get even more pop success? Oh yeah. That’s it. Banking on white america.

    62. Nas won everybody knows this . the takeover i listened to it maybe 2 times and didnt care for it .

    63. I respect the fact that this your opinion, but I don’t respect the fact that you aren’t stating the facts. Nas’s career died after that battle, be real. He became irrelevant. The only people who even remember his albums are the people who REALLY listen to him, which is few. Jay ended up with the money and the career. He’s the one being considered the greatest of all time, not Nas. I remember the last time Nas had any type of buzz was when he dropped that ‘hero’ song. But NO ONE cared about his album. It doesn’t matter who is your personal preference, the facts are clear as day, Jay-Z came out on top no matter how you slice it. Yes, Ether went harder than takeover, but like Kendrick Lamar said, Jay-Z spit more facts, Ether was so great mainly because he made fun of Jay, it was more like a comic thing than your traditional diss. Plus Nas was the underdog. Like you said, Nas won the BATTLE, that nigga lost the war, plain and simple

    64. Straight up, no matter which is your preference, Jay-Z won. Period. Nas became IRRELEVANT after that battle. Jay came out with the money and most importantly the career. Jay surpasses Nas in everyway. I know that you real Nas fans are going to disagree, and I’m sorry that you aren’t real enough to see past your own biased. But facts are facts, Jay is the one being considered the best in the game, the one still putting out hit albums and records, the one still competing with the likes the best of today, the one who’s music, presidents and people on WALL STREET still listen to for inspiration, and the one who actually mattered after that battle. Ether was the better diss track, better than Super Ugly and Takeover. But Nas was the underdog for a reason. The last hit he had was ‘Hero’, which really didn’t do that well. Nas will always be in my heart one of the best to do it, but I’m a realist first, and Nas lost. He won the battle, but he lost the war

      1. Co’sign dis nigg, Jay won, hands down, and takeover was on a classic album. i aint heard nuttin from nas since illmatic and jay gave him props for that,.jay catologee is ridic

      2. Hey Hip Hop, we’re talking about the battle not carrers! Once you stated that no matter what a person’s preference is and then started to pass your feelings as fact you lost! LOL! Wall St? LOL! Doesn’t the president listen to Jay and Nas? LOL!

      3. @ LOL @these comments
As I said, Nas won the battle, but lost the war. Nothing I said was false. And I didn’t say the PRESIDENT, I said PRESIDENTS. Obama isn’t the only one who has said he listens to Jay-Z. And I’m sure Obama listens to other artists besides Nas and Jay-Z, but he’s said that Jay is his preference. Don’t hate on facts. Like I said in my comment, i know you Nas fans are going to disagree, but unless you plan on refuting my statements with facts, don’t respond

    65. In my opinion nas won the battle. It’s easily noticeable when listening to the diss records. Nas at that time was fading away. The beef came to be and nas ripped Jay a new asshole, released a classic and catapulted back into the limelight. We all know Jay sold more records in the years to come but record sales mean shit. If numbers don’t lie then Jay z has just admitting defeat to Wayne. Look at nas now, his first single of his album was fire, he had the best verse on the carter iv and he is getting hype. Jay z just released an average collab album when he was seen as the lesser half, is getting dissed by game and Wayne and is sounding tired and boring. So did he really win the war against nas too?

      1. The fact that I agree that Lil Wayne is the on top the game at this moment, he is MILES away from album sales compared to Jay-Z. Lil Wayne only has two big selling albums under his belt, every album Jay ever made has sold huge. Wayne doesn’t even have 20 million albums sold altogether, jay is close to a 100 mil, and wayne been in the game almost as long as Jay. So yes, sales do mean shit, and yes, he did win the war against nas since nas isn’t even talked about anymore UNLESS it’s regarding him beefin with jay

      2. WATCH THE TRONE was a great album just because you are a close minded dude does’t mean its average. you just don’t know good music.

then you compare Wayne to Jay?

Jay-Z is a legend wayne is a overrated low tier rapper. nas killed C4 with just one verse and embarassed wayne on his own album.

stop with the dumb talk. thank you.

      3. Jay isn’t close to 100 million…don’t fucking lie. Also I wasn’t comparing Jay to Wayne. Not once did I compare them. Not once. Your entitled to your opinion on WTT but as a hova fan I would expect you to be disappointed as a whole lot of his fanbase was with his contribution to the album. Dumb talk? Really you had to insult my opinion? Just shows really. You blindly read my comment without taking in what I had to say and write back in rage defending your beloved hova.

In response to the other guy, based on the last album sales Wayne sold more than Jay so is Wayne better now? Is waka flocka flame better than canibis or chino xl because he sells more? Album sales lie. You may say they don’t but the facts tell you that they do. Why don’t you check nas’ new single? Look at how many plays it has on hiphopdx….yeah nas sure only comes up when it’s talk about Jay z doesn’t he?

      4. @ Anonymous..

Jay-Z fans use the “numbers don’t lie” argument whenever they have nothing else to bring to the table. Only further reinforcing the “Jay-Z is a sellout” comments. I love how they always say “hova has sold 100 million records GOAT!” All the while forgetting there is a white dude from Detroit that has outsold him with less albums… Weird.

Nas’ new single has a lot of plays on here simply because it is Nas. Everyone wants to hear what he has to say. Whether you’re a fan or not you will listen to it. Whether he won the battle or lost the war, the dude is still relevant. It feels like everyone forgot about Distant Relatives or something?

      5. Actually it’s not a lie, Jay-Z is close to 100 million sold worldwide. he was at 50 million in 06, 3rd behind eminem and 2pac. Eminem was at 80 mil then and is past the 100 mil mark, Jay should be close to the 100 mil probably 75-80 mil maybe more

    66. Tru indeed HOV state facts when he go at someone , not jokes, takeover was crazy, then he gave em super ugly , which took the wind outta nas, then that blueprint 2 joint was crazy, ..nas joint was ok, but when he said hov named his company after a nigga with aids..i kinds felt nas was just blowing smoke, because the roc a fellas were rich, roc hudson died of aids…

    67. Hey I like Jay-z but nas won. Jay-z has never been in a battle since then and we know why…Nas is not irrelevant, Untitled went gold and after you consider the fact that it was barely marketed that’s pretty amazing. Nas still steals songs and even though I love Jay….what was the last quotable Jay-z verse? (Shrugs) Just sayin.

      1. What’s the last quotable Nas line? How many albums did Jay have go gold after the battle? When was the last time Nas was brought up without Jay’s name somewhere involved? (shrugs)

      2. @ Serious?

About 6 months ago… When there was grammy talk for Distant Relatives. Was Jay-Z a part of that album? I don’t think he was… When do we hear Jay-Z’s name without Beyonce or Kanye being the reason for it?

      3. serious? stfu

untitled was probably to smart for you to understand…sly fox ,testify, america, project roach, yall my niggas, are all dope as fuck…untitled wasn’t bullshit pop music so idiots over look it

    68. Jay all day,. the lines were grimey and hit hard. if Ether came out first then takeover looked like a reply, all ya’ll would say jay won.

    69. For the God Son, I don’t expect childish punchlines like “Taboo Hoe” and “Dick Sucking Lips.” Really, Nas is too smart to result to kiddie snaps especially considering Jay-Z only spit One Verse on Takeover against him. One verse from Jay made Nas go in for 4 and I still don’t think he did better against that one verse…even with recruiting the 2pac sample to aid in the fight. Folks wanted Nas to win; thus, why Ether has been helped to the status it is.

Also, I thought the beat was too by the numbers. Some sparse, wannabe Beathoven shit. If anything, the fact that Nas’ career wasn’t ended by it is the only reason you can say Nas won. He survived which is a win in itself. At the end of the day, this is an old battle which can never be unbias considering how folks feel bout Jay and NAs….dick ryders on both sides.

I still feel Jay won (who signed to WHO’S label in the end?), and Nas should thank him for lighting the fire back under him. Unofficial Creative Influence for Stillmatic. Now, if you saying One Mic or even Got Yourself… vs. Takeover, that is more like it. Ether was a weak track. Plain and simple.

In terms of now though=NAS over JAY. Nas is too good of a writer to fall off…I just hope his beat selection continues to shine as it has since the horrible cuts off I Am (half decent half meh) and Nastradamus.

      1. You’re acting like Jay was paying Nas! That was Universal’s money! LOL! Who said you have to follow rules in a rap battle? How is Ether being helped? It’s already a classic rap battle song! LOL!

    70. Let’s look at some of the reasons people say Nas won

“Nas went in on Jay-Z in Ether”
–Nas resorted to name calling. ‘dick sucking lips’ and ‘camel face’ were Nas’s best disses in that song (you can’t lie and say they weren’t). That’s something you would expect from an elementary school kid, not an artistic rapper

“Jay-Z tried to be just like Nas”
Is that why Nas SIGNED TO JAY-Z LABEL AFTER THE BEEF? Is that why Jay-Z is worth half a billi and Nas well…isn’t? Is that why Jay-Z still gets nominated for awards and Nas well…doesn’t? Is that why Nas only put out one GOLD album after that beef and Jay put out several platinum ones? Is that why the last hit song Nas actually Ether? Yea, Jay definately copied this guy to a tee

“Nas said Em kilt Jay on his own song”
–This is where you Nas dick riders really look foolish. Listen to ‘Takeover’ dumbasses. Nas stole that diss from Jay-Z. Jay-Z pointed out the fact that Nas had the worst verse on his song “Oochie Wally”. You mean to tell me Nas’s comeback is to steal jay’s diss? LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMEEEE

“Nas kilt Jay in that song”
–Jay-z didn’t even spit a full verse in Takeover against Nas. Yet it was so crazy that Nas had to devote an entire song to him

Be serious people. It’s not a debate or argument. Jay won. Just face it. Ether full song was a grown ass man calling anther grown man names. Takeover had half a verse of FACTS as to why one man was better than the other. Most of Nas’s most memorable disses from Ether were shit that Jay said about him first.

      Takeover Verse:
I know you missin all the – FAAAAAAAME!
But along with celebrity comes bout seventy shots to your frame
      Nigga; you a – LAAAAAAAME!
Youse the fag model for Karl Kani/Esco ads
Went from, Nasty Nas to Esco’s trash
Had a spark when you started but now you’re just garbage
Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all
to your bodyguard’s “Oochie Wally” verse better than yours
Matter fact you had the worst flow on the whole fuckin song
but I know – the sun don’t shine, then son don’t shine
That’s why your – LAAAAAAAME! – career come to a end
There’s only so long fake thugs can pretend
Nigga; you ain’t live it you witnessed it from your folks pad
You scribbled in your notepad and created your life
I showed you your first tec on tour with Large Professor
(Me, that’s who!) Then I heard your album bout your tec on the dresser
So yeah I sampled your voice, you was usin it wrong
You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song
And you ain’t get a coin nigga you was gettin fucked and
I know who I paid God, Serchlite Publishing
Use your – BRAAAAAAAIN! You said you been in this ten
I’ve been in it five – smarten up Nas
Four albums in ten years nigga? I can divide
That’s one every let’s say two, two of them shits was due
One was – NAHHH, the other was “Illmatic”
That’s a one hot album every ten year average
And that’s so – LAAAAAAAME! Nigga switch up your flow
Your shit is garbage, but you try and kick knowledge?
(Get the fuck outta here) You niggaz gon’ learn to respect the king
Don’t be the next contestant on that Summer Jam screen
Because you know who (who) did you know what (what)
with you know who (yeah) but just keep that between me and you for now

      1. LOL! You people just don’t get it! Jay was on the top of the world, and Nas made a song and had people laughing at Jay! Eminem is till answering that Nas line! People say “you got ethered”! Who quotes Takeover? LOL! Jay made two more songs still trying to get at him! Only a sore loser does that! LOL!

      2. I’m sorry, when did Jay stop being on top of the world? And where the hell is Nas? Where has been since the beef? Only a sore loser would respond? You idiot, Ether was a response! Nas’s career was already dead before Takeover came out, Jay kilt him in the Super Ugly freestyle. Take Nas’s dick out your mouth. The only people who say ‘you got ethered’ are the FEW Nas fans left.

      3. Superugly and Blueprint 2 are two more Jay diss songs for Nas! LOL! Who cares about top of the world! Aren’t we talking about a rap battle? LOL!

      4. Obviously you care about the top of the world since you brought it up. “Jay-Z was on the top of the world….” That was your comment dumbass. Super Ugly was a FREESTYLE. Jay-Z never even devoted a full song to dissing Nas like Nas did Jay-Z. Yes, we are talking about a rap battle, a rap battle that Nas’s career didn’t make it out of. Face it, that battle ended Nas’s career. Stop fuckin hatin

      5. “Jay-Z never even devoted a full song to dissing Nas like Nas did Jay-Z.” – Super-Ugly, that argument refuted.

“Yes, we are talking about a rap battle, a rap battle that Nas’s career didn’t make it out of.”–
Really? Distant Relatives wasn’t critically acclaimed just this last year? Poor guy must feel terrible having a hot album and not having a career. “Stop fuckin hatin”–
Isn’t that what you’re doing? You posted an entire book with a verse to a song simply to prove Nas fans incorrect.. Isn’t that being a Nas “hater”? Or am I confused by what the word means?

      6. LOL! This person is angry! Look at the technicality spins right now! Nas is still signed, still releasing albums, still touring! Isn’t that a career? Yes I did say Jay was on top of the world. That’s why he threw shots at Nas and Prodigy! He thought he was the new king of NY! Until that Ether made his soul burn slow!

    71. Somebody let this person know they are misrepresenting Hip Hop! There are no rules about what you can say in a rap battle!

    72. Went from nasty nas to escos trash, had ah spark when ya started butnow ya just garabage. Jay-z diss was all facts, ether was nas screamin in anger cause jay was right about his whole career. And most of yall tryna defend NAs and yall dont even got his last 2 albums, i probaly got more albums then u dick ridin bums Lol!

    73. What’s really funny is “Jay stated facts”! Who cares? Rick Ross doesn’t state facts, and most of you people love him! Now all of a sudden, facts matter because Nas made people laugh at Jay? LOL!

      1. Spoken like a true nigga….with Nas’s dick in his mouth. Who cares about facts?! You just basically said it’s ok to lie and say shit that ain’t true in your songs. You the reason niggas can get away with rappin about shit they don’t know about, cuz fake ass people like you eat fake shit up. And who the fuck said anything about Rick Ross? Your point was so failed that you had to bring up Rick Ross to defend Nas?

    74. i see these ppl are working really hard to rewrite history because they think enough time has passed…Nas SLAUGHTERED jay-z…end of story. It was not up for debate then, it was the well experienced fact.

All these kids talking nonsense about “jay stated facts” lol…yea thats real creative. take over was lame and thirsty. Ether was refreshing and had real sting….a a cuple of your beloved facts to boot.

get your brainwashed minds right pls, this has to stop sometime.

      1. Kendrick Lamar said Jay stated facts. He’s not a kid, he was well old enough to remember. My problem with your Nas lovers is that yall are so hung up on Ether that yall try to twist into saying Nas came out of that battle on top, when the fact is he ain’t shit now. THAT is something isn’t debatable. I bet you don’t even listen to him like that. Probably don’t even own his last album.

    76. “And his manuscript just sounds stupid/ when KRS already made a album called “Blueprint”/… First, Biggie’s ya man then you got the nerve to say that you’re better than BIG/”

“You seem to be only concerned with dissing women”

“In ’88 you was gettin’ chased to your building/ Callin’ my crib & I aint even give you my numbers,/ All I did was give you a style for you to run with./ Smiling in my face, glad to break bread with the god./ Wearing Jaz’ chains. No teks. No cash. No cars./ No jail bars Jigga, No pies, no case./ Just Hawaiian shirts, hangin’ with Little Chase./”

“You 36 in a karate class? You Tae-boe hoe,/ trying to ‘work it out’, you tryna get brolic?/ ask me if I’m tryin’ to kick knowledge../ Nah, I’m tryin’ to kick the shit you need to learn though,/ That ETHER, that shit that make ya soul burn slow.”

“Is he Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy?/ Oh I get it, You Biggie & he’s Puffy! (eww)/ Rockafeller died of age, that was the end of his chapter/ & that’s the guy ya’ll chose to name your company after?/”

“& yo man stabbed Un and made you take the blame, you ass/ Went from Jaz, to hangin with Kane, to Irv, to BIG/ & Eminem murdered you on your own shit/”

    77. I’ve been real all my life, they confuse it with conceit
Since I will not lose, they try to help him cheat
But I will not lose, for even in defeat
There’s a valuable lesson learned, so it evens it up for me
When the grass is cut, the snakes will show
I gotta thank the little homie Nas for that though
Saving me the hassle of speaking to half of these assholes
      ===============
Looks like admitted defeat to me! LOL!

      1. @ Anonymous

He posted both lines. So he obviously acknowledged it. But… To re-iterate

“But I will not lose, for even in defeat
There’s a valuable lesson learned, so it evens it up for me”

So what he’s saying is.. Despite his loss due to Nas cheating (How the fuck do you cheat in a rap battle?) he learned a valuable lesson. The key word in that entire verse is “defeat”.

      2. By ignoring it to try to twist the verse into Jay admitting that he lost a battle. He’s not admitting defeat in anything, you have to understand the lyrics

      3. So the entire hip-hop world outside of Jay-z fans are twisting the truth? All the “facts talk” How about this for “facts talk”.

“In ’88 you was getting chased through your building
Calling my crib and I ain’t even give you my numbers
All I did was gave you a style for you to run with
Smiling in my face, glad to break bread with the god
Wearing Jaz chains, no Tecs, no cash, no cars
No jail bars Jigga, no pies, no case
Just Hawaiian shirts, hanging with little Chase
        You a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan”

      4. @ willy

you bringin up so called facts; like “all i did was gave you a stlye to run with.” when jay first got in the game he was rappin fast, nothing like nas style! “no cash, no cars, no jail bars jigga, no pies..” on this very site a dude that is well known for moving those pies. admitted that jay use to hustle on the block and move them things. so the talk about no cash, no cars and no pies aint true. and if you’ve seen the streets is watching dvd, you know that jay was paying for his videos out his own pocket before staring rocafella records, huh i wonder how he go that $$$.. nas was saying slick shit thats it.

    78. This is my first comment here on this website and I couldn’t have picked a better topic to jump in on. But before I give my opinion let me pose a question to you all….

If I beat the shit out of you today after you called me a bitch, then later on in life you became a multi-millionaire does that somehow erase your ass whoppin?

This is exactly what happens everytime this Nas Vs. Jay-Z debate comes up. I don’t care who you are or where your from, when Ether dropped, the world went bananas..PERIOD.

If you lived in NYC man, Hot 97 was poppin’ every radio station, bodega and block was in utter shock of how hard NAS came back on Jay.

At the time, Jay was feeling almost invincible but he made the number 1 mistake that all egotistical dudes like him make, he did not respect his opponent.

I don’t care if you felt Nas made all shitty albums with Illmatic being his only classic, NAs’ pen game is not to be fucked with and Jay-Z sneak attacking him while his mother was dying was a bad move and he paid for it.

No matter how much money Jay-z makes or grammy’s he wins, or deals he makes, he’ll never be able to erase what Nas did to him. Never… End of Discussion.

It’s been said in the other posts earlier, when someone gets handled either on the mic or in life in general we say “You got ETHERED” you got Ethered… Nothing else needs to be said.

      1. Only lames still hang on to a fight that happened years ago. The point isn’t wheteher or not it can be erased, but does the shit even matter anymore? And no one says ‘you got ethered’ anymore. that shit is old, and dead. the only people still holding on to it are Nas fans. Nas doesnt even care about this shit anymore

      2. So we can’t talk about rap history because it happened years ago? LOL!

Hey Shabazz, I co-sign that comment!

    79. Really Idk care who won this battle or not, what’s funny to me is the only time you ever hear Nas’s name come up is if it’s about this beef with Jay-Z. Just sayin, I’d rather be in Jay-Z position than Nas

      1. LOL! Did you see the Nas story the other day? Do you see the Nas songs that are posted here? LOL! Did you not hear the Nas verse on Wayne’s album? They are both millionaire’s! LOL!

    80. all compare OTIS to NASTY…

hmmmmm… well let’s put it like this

if you think otis is better, you really know nothing about hip hop as an art form, and a lyrical perspective. NASTY is 5/5
while OTIS is a 1/5 at best. biggest throw away trash this year.

bunch of tight pant wearing motha fucker’s up in here huh?

    81. Everyone just cut the bullshit. Nas won the battle, Jay-Z won the war. Who even cares about this shit anymore? I mean yea it’s fun to reflect on it and discuss it, but I hate the fact that the bitches come out every time this topic is brought up. Jay-z fans can’t stand for him to have just one blemish on his career, and Nas fans are so hung up on Ether that they are deluted to the fact that this nigga ain’t shit no more. Both them niggas done shook hands and moved on. Jay-Z lost the battle and even admitted it. But anyone can see that Jay-Z came out of it all way better than Nas did. Jay fans, stop acting like this nigga perfect and can’t lose every now and then, and Nas fans…he won a rap battle, great, that shit was like 10 years ago. Get the fuck over it. You make him look worse by trying to hold on to that shit. I wish niggas would talk about Nas in some other way than this stupid beef

      1. you realise this whole article is about the beef? What are people going to comment on instead? The fucking ozone layer?

      1. Yes! Distant Relatives and Untitled! Jay’s last two albums too! So stop acting like everyone who can see that Nas beat Jay in that battle is a Nas stan! LOL!

    82. Talk about NAS’ albums but how about Jay’s albums? It’s funny how people think that Jay don’t make garbage albums. In My Life Time Vol.3 : Life In Times of Shawn Carter,The Blueprint 2:The Gift and The Curse, and Kingdom Come were not good albums and people are so so damn scared to say it so I will. You got people that are too scared to point out Jay-Z’s flaws and failures and that always seems to be the problem. It’s easy for you to point out NAS’ bad albums but don’t act like Jay don’t have any neither because it’s not so hard to point’em out. Stop treating this man like he’s never made anything flawless before. That’s why I respect NAS and will always go with Ether because NAS was letting people know that this man named Jay is not perfect and flawless like you make him out to be. People never expose Jay-Z’s flaws in the news articles. It’s the media and news writers that make Jay like he’s superior as if he’s superman and they need to stop. and yeah those albums from Jay were whack so read it and weep

      1. Because they think that if they ride for Jay, he’s going to break off some of that money for them! People always do this for rich people! Give them free stuff and hope they will do something for you!

    83. People got caught in the hype of that battle but Nas’s flow was a hot mess on ether. He had some moments but he was clearly rusty on that joint. The fact that it was Jay Z that he addressed it to made it stand out.

    84. how quickly people forget…smh…to understand the beef between Jay and Nas you have to understand both of them and their careers to decide “who won”…How quick are some of you to forget of how jealous Nas is of others success; or did some of you forget that he was jealous o BIG because he felt he had the hotter album in 94 and was getting all these acclaims and what not and then Ready to Die dropped and who took the spotlight thats right BIG, why do you think Big referred to Nas as the “mad rapper”?!?!

a lot of you Nas groupies claim that he isn’t in it for the money…then why release “I am” and “Nastrodomus” which were clear attempts at Nas trying to reach mainstream and going out of character to do so. He’s always been a jealous person its why he hated jay so much because he felt he deserved to be at the top especially in NY supremacy but he wasn’t because everything Jay said to him on “Takeover” over was true…people love to say Jay wanted to be like Nas but fail to see how much Nas wanted Jay’s success and Big’s for that matter….and this is just the tip of the iceberb

      1. Newsflash! NAS WAS OUT FIRST! LOL! I can tell most people have never heard Last Real N***a Alive! He and Big were cool! I even pasted a verse from it above! LOL!

    85. it was written is a classic,i am is dope….jay aint state facts…especially since those two albums match anything jay has put out

    86. Ether=gay liricks+wack ron browz beat.point blank period. nas loss this battle the minute he started to be obsessed with disgusting gay shit and showed his true homosexual nature. nas basically bodied himself. Any people who like the ether record are either gay or bi.

      1. lol you’re dumb as hell. anyone who likes ether is gay or bi? fuck outta here. sound like an ignorant ass little kid

    87. jay z is a faggot who makes nusic for stupid faggos that like pop music that little white girls listen..jay z wack as fuck and has lyrics a retarded baboon could write

    88. Both the Nas and Jay fans need to stick to the script. The topic here is who won the BATTLE! Not who is your favorite rapper, who’s career is better, who’s hot and who’s not, but who won the battle!

      To the Jay-Z dick suckers:
The fact that Nas didn’t turn out as sucessful is irrelevant to this topic and is NOT evidence of Jay winning the battle. HE LOST, get over it. You can say his career died or whatever, which is true, but you will NEVER be able to erase the ass whoopin he handed your hero

      To the Nas fans:
Stop acting like Nas winning the battle means he’s automatically better than Jay-Z. I remember the beef clearly. What made Ether so ill was the fact that NO ONE expected Nas to be able to bounce back, that man was beaten down in every way. Not only was Ether the best diss record of all time, it was the best comback of all time. There were multiple shots fired between both of them, without Ether, no one could say that Nas even had a chance let alone won. You take away Takeover, Jay still slaughtered him with Super Ugly.

And yes I called you Jay fans dick riders because atleast the Nas fans are actually talking about the point, THE BATTLE. You Jay heads are just saying dumb shit that ain’t got nothing to do with this article. ‘Jay got more money, Jay more famous, the president listens to Jay’…stfu

      1. All I have to say is Jay’s momma made him apologize for Superugly, I can’t see the win in that song! One of them things where you can say Ether really hurt Jay! And I also brought up Obama listening to Nas too because someone typed Jay makes Wall St music or something like that!

      2. @Lol @ these comments that’s exactly why it would’ve been a win for Jay-Z. Super Ugly was literally that nasty that Jay’s mom was like ‘you went too far with that one’. Nas’s only claim to to a win is Ether. He dissed Jay plenty of times before that but Ether is the only thing people remember. Then again it’s the only thing that really matters. Just saying it goes both ways. One could say it makes Jay look good because it took a whole song for Nas to win. Jay never used a full song against Nas, super ugly was just a short freestyle. But on the flip side, it’s kind of sad that after all the work Jay did bodyin Nas before Ether, that all it took was one song for Jay to lose unanimously. So either way you look at it in my opinion Ether can’t be used as a reason to say Nas is better, just like Jay being more sucessful can’t be a reason to say he won a battle which he CLEARLY lost

      3. A thinking man’s reply! Yes! I never said Nas was better. I did state that I like them both, but Jay lost this battle! Thanks for the grown man reply!

      4. i hate when ppl try and compare ether and taker. jay only used half the song to get as nas and used the other half to go at prodigy. nas on the other hand used his whole song to serve jay up. if you wnna go song for song you gtta compare it to super ugly. for some reason because jay appolpgized for it, it dont count. jay aired nas out with joint! anybody can say some dirty dozens slick shit that sounds good. but when you come with some factual shit about nas in pink suits and hitting his baby mama and he”left condoms on your babies seat”, “kiss my dick when you was kissing that bitch.” Ether was a better song and supa ugly was a better diss record. it was a tie IMO.. @anonymous, you gtta be out your mind saying ether “the best diss record of all time.” its not even in the top 3. second round k.o. is the goat diss record, and its not even better than, the bitch in you, or kiss the game goodbye (beanie gettin at jada)..

    89. Lol niggas must’ve forgot how Nas used to want to be just like Biggie and was beefin with him too. Every rapper has someone they look up to. Niggas who old enough to remember know that Jay wanted to be like Big, not like Nas. Both them niggas wanted to be Big that was what the whole beef was about, who was gonna take Big place after he died

      1. So Puff drove his new Range through Queens bridge Projects He let me drive it, before Ready to Die hit
BIG and I hit blunts performing at the Arc Next thing you knew, BIG blew and all the balling starts
He had Kim and his crew, I found Fox Only niggas in New York with number one charts BIG was ahead of his time him and Raekwon my niggas But dig it they couldn’t get along
That’s when Ghostface said it on the Purple tape Bad Boy biting Nas album come awake
BIG told me Rae was stealing my slang And Rae told me out in Shaolin BIG would do the same thing
But I borrowed from both them niggas
Jigga started to flow like us, but hit with ‘Ain’t No Niggas’ Had much Versace swagger BIG admired the Brooklyn knight And it took him in as Iceberg the rapper Today they don’t know nothing, about this bullshit There’s more shit than wanting to be this King of New York shit
        =================
Nas was out before Big! LOL!

      2. Co-sing this. Nas hated how Big came in and took over. Everyone who was old enough to remember remembers that. And @ Lol @ these comments Lol damn I done seen u alot on some of these comments. You been up here for a minute trolling ppls commments

      3. Trolling is doing weird stuff! I’m replying and talking to the people! Bringing up some facts they’re missing!

        youtube.com/watch?v=kcgEUJ3rTK8

        educate yourselves people!

    90. And I’m a fan of both Nas and Jay! LOL @ those comments out there trying to say just because you say Nas won means you’re a Nas stan! Blueprint is one of my all time fave albums! Do I need to bring up how Bleek even admitted “the little homie got us. It was a dark day for The Roc”? Do I need to bring up the Angie Martinez interview where Jay was flustered when she asked about Ether? I’m even willing to overlook the long term career assessments after this battle people keep typing! Jay took an L, it’s OK to admit being a Jay fan! But this is rap history, two rap giants going at it. We will always talk about it!

      1. Nigga take yo ass to bed. I skimmed through all the comments before I decided to post anything and all I seen was yo name commenting on what looks like everyone who had something think Jay-Z won the battle. I mean we all know he lost, but damn son you had to be on this shit for hours you got comments on like the 2nd page and shit. Lol I’m starting to think you one of those kids who really ain’t even old enough to remember the Jay-Z/Nas thing

      2. Nope! Totally wrong! So now I can only comment how you see fit? LOL! I didn’t know there was a comment limit! Don’t worry, I saw Breaking Bad tonight! Saw the Jets win too! I pay for my internet connection!

      3. Lol @Nas>Jay-z. @Lol @ these comments let’s not lie, you’ve been up here for hours. I know because I have too and you’ve been commenting not stop. I’ve just been watching and reading but when I saw this I just had to laugh and say something. But it’s ok, I can laugh at myself from time to time 🙂

    91. jay z is such a fucking sell out. blueprint 3 was the nail in the coffin, this nigga would drop a collabo album with beiber if it kept him hot. i never seen a nigga hold on like this. writing articles for bullshit rolling stone, a publication that has tried to destroy hip hop on several occasions. not only is jay begging for acceptance, his music is shit now. dumb bitch nigga. self praise is no praise at all. a king doesnt crown himself, a king is crowned by the people, biggie is the king

    92. I wouldn’t be here today if Biggie was still alive. While Pac and Biggie were doin there thing in the 90’s, Nas was right there with them with a classic album to back him. I was more like a sidekick. Nas solidified his spot in the game while the greats were here, I “solidified” my spot in the game after Biggie died, along with all the rhymes I stole from Biggie.

      1. jay wouldnt be here if big was alive!? u cant be serious!! jay solidied his spot when they was both still here with reasonable doubt in 96, 3 months before 2pac’s death. and he also solidified his spot when big had to redo his verse after hearing jays on brooklyns finest. when jay resights one of bigs line “im only bigging up my brotha” cause hes big enough to do it! and dnt forget that jay, big and charlie baltimore were suppose to make a album as The Commision. they were peers and very competitive with each other. but jay has always stood on his own..

    93. Kendrick Lamar is a huge Jay-Z fan by his own admission and he actually use to try to rhyme like Jay back in the day so that right there should tell you all you need to know about his objectivity (or lack of) in this debate that isnt even debatable really.

Jay although a pretty good rapper lost to a superior emcee, sorry but that is the truth, like it or not!

Beans admitted it, Bleek admitted it, N.Y. city fans declared NaS the winner, Jay was humbled and stuttering on the radio when he was asked about it, 5O said Nas won, Jada said Nas won, Eminem (who is an accomplished battle emcee and has more experience in battles than both of them) said that NaS won the battle and the nail in the coffin should be when Jay himself admitted that he lost the battle in the song “blueprint 2” where he says………………………………

“Ive been real all my life they confuse it with deceit, but I will not lose so they tried to help him cheat, but I will not lose for EVEN IN DEFEAT, theres a valuable lesson learned so it evens it up FOR ME”

Jay lost this battle and if you cant admit it then all that means is that, YOU CANT ADMIT IT because it doesnt change the way it has gone down in history, as an “L” for Jay.

    94. Nas did win this battle… For all the reasons that have been fielded here:

      1. Jay got a bit too cocky after the response Takeover got, and instead on delivering the final blow, turned his back on his opponent and under estimated him

      2. Nas’ career before or at the time when Takeover came out had taken a serious hit with the negative response to Nastradamus… He was on his way out. The fact that the ‘beef’ revitalized his career and catapulted him to a spot higher that Jay… That was a winner

      3. Lyrically, Jay summarized Nas’ career, and thought that would be enough to put all into perspective. Good move, but then if he had included all the stuff he said in Super Ugly in Takeover, I believe Nas wouldn’t have bounced back

      4. Tied to the above, Jay kept it strictly business and wanted to hurt Nas the rapper, good sportsmanship, but Nas upped the ante and went at jay the individual. It got personal, and that gave Nas the upper hand. Wanting to raise the bar even further, Jay released Super Ugly, but that was a little too late, it sounded desperate and was sooo nasty Jay’s mama asked him to apologize, GAME OVER.

      5. This was not two giants going at it, Nas was clearly the underdog here. Jay was reaching his prime, and Nas was near washed up at this point. But like Jordan, he released ‘STILLmatic’ and proved to the world, and Jay that he was still worthy of the crown…

      6. Jay admitted defeat. I know it, you know it, even he knows it… Anyone who chooses to say otherwise is clearly biased…

      7. His camp admitted it… I know it, you know it, Jay knows it… Anyone who chooses to say otherwise is clearly biased…

      8. New York voted… Nas was declared winner, and anyone who says it was something that should’ve been carried out with a larger pool clearly does not understand that the king of NYC was being crowned here, and Nas was declared king, by his people…

      9. The hip hop world knows that it was impossible to come back from a diss verse like the one on Takeover… Jay did state facts, we all knew it… However, just to come back from that to that level can only be compared to Ali beating Foreman in Kinshasa (D.R.C). So just for that, Nas won…

      10. Jay Z is still trying to be like Nas… he may have all the money, but his credibility as a lyricist has not been solidified yet. Nas is a true lyrical icon whose name has been engraved throughout time with the legends. Jay is exceptional, but still has that Biggie complex. He’s still in the shadow of a dead man…

Note that this is my opinion, so I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. I listen to The Blueprint more that I listen to STILLmatic, but I also listen to I am… more than I listen to The Life and Times of Shawn Carter.. I think in the end, it was a great battle because the two compliment themselves. Nas holds the streets and stays true to his rap roots, while Jay will always look for what’s hot and be that, so as to stay relevant, just as he has done.

To comment on the panelists, I feel Kendrick Lamar may have been a little too young to really understand what was going on. Wasn’t he born in 92 or something?? This battle took place 10 years ago… Do the math… Of course Jada Kiss was already a well recognized lyricists, having gotten the co sign from BIG himself…

      #my2cent$

      1. Cosignee @most of ur points butHw u mean Nas was on his way out given this timeline, Illmatic(94), IWW(96),The FIRM(97), I Am n Nastradamus(99/00) all platinum n multiplatinum albums, the battle happened 00/01, hws a niggas career supposed to be over when his album were doing good on the charts, apparently those millions dat bought his albums didnt think so. Perhaps ur point his dat Nas despite gaining in album sales n popularity lost the almighty critical acclaim.

    95. You lik b@lls kendrik, NAS is is the Champ more facts as in what ? I know nas killed him from past experiences to physical descriptions. Jigga was ayt but the hook WASN’t a good choice dat ain’t hardcore its “LAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE”

    96. Which famous line is on Takeover ? Ether gave us one line that is still debated till today and forever: “Eminem Murdered u on your own shit”.

      1. Dude, that line ain’t debatable – what are you talking about? Eminem verse was light years ahead of Jay-Z’s and I don’t even fuck with Em like that… be real.

    97. LOLLLL at all you saying Jay only devoted a verse to Nas while Nas had to devote a whole song…….motherfucker Nas didnt just devote the song to Jay, he devoted it to the WHOLE FUCKIN ROCAFELLA CREW, the crew that was on top of the game at that moment (Freeway, Beans, State Prop, Chris n Neef, etc.) all those dudes were poppin at that moment, and Nas went at ALL OF THEM…….and dude was arguably at the lowest point in his career…….that takes fuckin balls if you ask me…….and also, since when is Ether not based on facts?
Jayz bein an attention whore, biter, woman hater, dickrider, fame leecher, and getting outshined by another rapper…..all these are facts lol

At the end of the day, the man himself admitted to defeat……you can’t really say anything after that

      1. Bitch shut up, ether was mainly about Jay-Z, he mentioned the whole crew in like only one line, and it was still geared mostly towards jay! And Jay been a woman hater? Bitch nas used to beat his girl, the same one jay fucked, which jay exposed in super ugly. FACT. Jay an attention whore bc he in the spotlight? come on man be serious

      1. Jay-Z cultural impact is well above Nas cultural impact, Jay-Z helped globalize hip-hop Nas never could stretch it that far

      2. Em and Pac Globalized hip hop, not Jay. Go any in the world and ask about rap music, the first rapper you hear is either pac or Em !

      3. How the fuck did em globalize hip hop…you think nobody new about hip hop until 10 years ago?

We had NY rap full blown in england way before i was a teenager in 84, but I see the mainstream cats out there

    98. Man if you not old enough to remember the beef you don’t need to be talking about it. It’s so clear that there are way too many teenage Nas fans up here. Here’s how the beef played out:

First off, Nas never slaughtered ANYONE. It wasn’t a slaughter, no one was saying that back then. It also wasn’t a lop sided win either. And Nas was NOT the underdog. Niggas was choosing him over Jay-Z from the beginning because he had been in the game for so long and Jay was looked at like the young cocky kid disrespecting his elder. Jay NEVER tried to be like Nas, the beef was over who was going to takeover as King of NY after Biggie died, the whole beef was about being like Biggie. Both of them wanted that spot. The beef was WAY more than Takeover and Ether, you niggas talkin like the beef was only 2 songs long. The truth is that Nas was getting DESTROYED for a minute, and everyone knew this. Most people were actually rooting for Nas from the get go, but Jay-Z was serving him up. Why do you think the only diss people remember from Nas is Ether? You niggas sayin Jay-Z ain’t shit and can’t rap and can’t see Nas are just kids who don’t know shit about hip-hop or this battle. Jay proved himself in this battle. NO ONE was expecting Ether to be so good all of Nas’s previous disses were negatively received. It wasn’t a lop sided win, but Nas did win, because even though it was a desparate comeback, Ether was the better diss track then anything from the diss, so he won. But niggas who are really old enough KNOW that Jay was killing him, he just got too cocky and instead of finishing him off he turned his nose at Nas and got ate up for it. That beef DID NOT END NAS CAREER you dummies. Nas’s career was already over before the beef started. The reason they say Jay spit more facts is because he did. Period. He pointed out that he fucked Nas’s old girl and got head from her, that Nas was a woman abuser, the fact that even Nas fans mostly agreee that Illmatic was the only classic Nas album in Nas’s long career (which is why his career was dead before the beef), and a whole bunch of other shit, just listen to super ugly. The thing that made us go bananas over Ether was that it was funny as hell! I mean the camel face, dip suckin lips, rock-a-fellow lines were PRICELESS. And ‘Em kilt you on your own shit’, yea Nas did steal that diss from Jay-Z who said something like that first on takeover about nas’s oochie wally song, but Nas made the diss better on Ether, which is why niggas don’t even remember the fact Jay said it first. Case and point, both of these emcees are good, two of the all time greats, Jay wanted to take his place as the King of NY, Nas was trying resurect his dying career and get the crown back that he lost when Biggie came in the game. Jay could’ve won, but his dumb cocky ass got ahead of himself and Nas reminded us of why he was so great. It wasn’t enough to save his career, but Jay didn’t end it. It was just a great battle that will go down in history. Jay admitted defeat, Nas signed with his label, they shook hands, and lived happily ever after

      1. You got some facts in your comments and I read some bullshit in there as well. For one, Stillmatic the album (including the Jay-Z diss) did resurrect Nas’s career, that album was solid and it went platinum.

      2. I’m definitely old enough to remember that battle, but I don’t agree with most of the shit you said.

You’re saying Nas’s career was already over before that beef, but he previous album to Stillmatic was Platinum (Nastradamus) and before that it was I Am which was 2x Platinum.

Both of those albums dropped in 99, he waited 2 years and dropped Stillmatic.

When ever album you’ve put out up to that point has been platinum or more, your career is far from over.

Plus, your trying to say his career was over because Illmatic was his only classic album. It Was Written and I Am were both incredible albums, but when you’ve already dropped what is viewed as the best hip hop album EVER, it’s hard to go up from there. Like I already pointed out, every album between Illmatic and Stillmatic was Platinum or better, so I don’t see how his career was ‘over’.

Also, your saying Jay was looked at as the young cocky kid who disrespected his elder: Jay is 4 years older than Nas. There was only a 2 year difference between Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt coming out.

Blueprint was Jay’s 6 album by the time Takeover dropped, so nobody was looking at him as the ‘new, young cocky kid’.

A couple of the points you made were good, but for the most part, the oversights in your opinion fuck up the entire post.

      3. Teenage Nas fans…to be honest I don’t think there are any.
Fact is I think were all grown up and actually stating facts about his music carear, not using baby language like He’s the best, He out sold…
Fact is we’re not groupies but real heads who realize an artist can have faults, flop commercially and overall bring out the best of their charactor which other wise would have never manifest through creativity

      4. Hw u mean Nas career was dead given this timeline, Illmatic(94), IWW(96),The FIRM(97), I Am n Nastradamus(99/00) all platinum n multiplatinum albums, the battle happened 00/01, hws a niggas career supposed to be over when his album were doing good on the charts, apparently those millions dat bought his albums didnt think so.

      5. U talkin like u really had some un disclosed facts brah brah!!! Sounds like u jus got super ugly on repeat. Nas career was over b4 takeover??? Brah u obviosly dnt do the knowledge rap huh? Cause if u did then nas like so many REAL mcs droppd strait knowledge. Jay z was for the shiny outspoken hustlers that wanted to b noticed nas is quiet humble poison fo yo ass…black girl lost, project window, reverse….man listen i knw j make ya thing jump like all the othr girls but nas is for the G’s not only bcuz our bdays is this wednesday(9/14) either cuz im quiet but ill too jus observing till u try n play the god!!!

      6. Cosign every thing you said. I’m over the age of 26 and I know how it all exactly went down. Nas threw a shot a Jay on “Stillmatic” freestyle that wasn’t recieved well by fans, then Jay responded back with Takeover. Takeover devastated Nas fans back then and they thought his career was over. Nas beat him in the battle with responding back with ether. So Jay won the first round and Nas got the second. People don’t realize Takeover was a response to the “Stillmatic” freestyle Nas put out directed towards Memphis Bleek and Jay. The beef bewteen those two occurred when Big was here. Big use to serve as a middleman for Nas and Jay about partnership in business. In 1996 Jay wanted to sign The Firm to Rocafella records not just Nas people. Nas who was the leader turned the offer down. Jay felt a certain way about that and it was tension between them since then. For the people saying Jay change his style after Nas and Biggie came out,of course he did because his flow at the time was not getting him a deal. Nas and Biggie flow and rhyme structure was what labels at the time wanted. So if something is not given you the result that you want, then you change whatever your doing to get that desired end. When Biggie past New York wanted Jay to step up to take the crow because he was a talented MC and repping Brooklyn like Biggie. Besides it would be who Biggie would of wanted to take his place, since him and Nas had a little beef.

      7. You niggas is stupid just because Nas had a few platinum albums didn’t mean shit. Jay-Z still makes platinum albums but as far as CURRENT TIMES he’s not popularly chosen or regarded as the best now. Guys like Lil Wayne, Drake, Wiz Khalifa, are in the forfront. Back then, it was BIGGGIE AND JAY-Z. Nas was the was considered the best before Biggie came in and took his place, then Jay-Z dropped Reasonable Doubt which was recieved as an instant classic then dropped 3 #1 albums (Vol.1,2, and 3), which put him next in line. Nas was still in the picture and still had a strong base of fans, just like Jay-Z does today, but he fell off as No.1. When Big died, Jay-Z made a statement about being the new king of NY, which is what prompted Nas to respond, which is how the beef started. Nas was already out the door before the beef started. Most of you niggas don’t even know about the little subliminal beef that Big and Nas had. Look it up. That nigga career wasn’t dead in terms of he was completely irrelevant, I just meant the nigga was already headed out the door before the Jay-Z beef. That is the reason why Jay-Z still ended up taking over the rap game after that beef, it was just Jay’s time. Yea he lost the battle in terrible fashion, but like I said Nas was already on his way out the door, as well as other guys like Ray-K. Yes Jay-Z is older than Nas but the nigga started rappin at 26 he had only 4 or 5 years in by the time Blueprint dropped. Get your feelings out of the conversation and face facts. Like I said before, all of Nas’s previous disses before Ether were considered weak Jay had already done the damage to him. And I wish you niggas would stop actin like Nas never wanted the limelight this nigga tried to put out commercial albums too he just failed at it. And no one said anything about what albums you personally feel are great. Illmatic was his only classic album. Like Jay said in Takeover ‘I can do the math that’s one classic album every ten years average’. Jay-Z atleast has 2 under his belt with Reasonable Doubt being his all time best but Blueprint and even Vol.1 being considered classics as well just not as good as his first. If I weren’t telling the truth about Nas hasn’t sold the same since that beef. NOT BECAUSE OF THE BEEF. But because he was already beginning to be replaced by majority. It happens to all the greats, Jay is experiencing it now

      8. to the dude above me:

Reasonable Doubt wasn’t considered ‘a classic’ when it first came out according to the relevant critics back then. The Source still meant something at the time and they gave it a 4 out of 5, then later changed it to a 5 several years later.

How are you going to say, Nas fans need to get their feelings out of it, because Illmatic is the only classic regardless of how we feel towards It Was Written and I Am, then turn around to say you think In My Lifetime Vol 1 is classic to you.

So you can have your opinion about what is, and what isn’t classic, but nobody else can? Makes perfect sense.

Then your going to say some bullshit like ‘he hasn’t sold the same since the beef’

        Stillmatic = Platinum
        God’s Son = Platinum
        Street’s Disciple = Platinum

So since the beef started he dropped 3 straight platinum albums, just like before the beef started he had 3 straight platinum albums.

Hip Hop is Dead and the Untitled album both went gold with zero airplay

If you’re going to make an argument, at least look up the facts

I like how you try to spin the beef into something it never was.

      9. @R.pgh, u shldnt be surprised abt d comments u seeing here, they just showing their tru stanish colours. Dat nigga above actually tryna justify d fact that Nas’s career was over despite a timeline like this; Illmatic(94), IWW(96),The FIRM(97), I Am n Nastradamus(99/00) all platinum n multiplatinum albums, the battle happened 00/01, hws a niggas career supposed to be over when his album were doing good on the charts, apparently those millions dat bought his albums didnt think so.

      Aight peace.

    100. The article at hand is who won the battle of the Nas/Jay-Z beef… Nas won without question, which is why so many Jay fans are so irate and disillusioned with their comments.

Now the argument of whose the better emcee is completely separate… that title also goes to Nas. First off, people wanna say how “Takeover” and “Super Ugly” were filled with so many facts, which they were (but as to imply that “Ether” wasn’t), but just analyze the single line of many factual ones within the track in, “Name a rapper that I ain’t influenced”… the legends paid/pay great homage to Nas… Pac’s “Me And My Girlfriend” was directly influenced by Nas’ “I Gave You Power”, Biggie’s idea of the “Ready To Die” album cover with his baby photo being there was inspired by Nas’ “Illmatic” in which Nas used a picture of his youth, Rakim even gave Nas his props as an elite emcee (no better glory then when a teacher esteems his student), Jadakiss included Nas in her own personal top 5… along with Pac, Biggie, and himself, Killah Priest (the most underrated emcee on the planet) stated that Nas and himself are both top 5, dead or alive in a collaboration track “Crime Cardinals”. I can go on and on, but it’d be unnecessary. But no matter how many facts I just stated in this comment, people are gonna respond with negativity just because Jay-Z’s POPULARITY outshines Nasty Nas’. Just my take or personal opinion regarding the topic of whose the better EMCEE, not the most popular, not the most commercially successful, not the most record selling artist, BUT WHOSE THE BETTER EMCEE.

I end this comment with a classic lyrical gem from Immortal Technique (another underrated legend that the world may never know… also note that these lyrics weren’t directed towards Jay from Tech): “Foretold by the dead sea scrolls/ written in codes/ so if yo message ain’t sh__, fu__ the records you sold/ Cuz if you go platinum, it’s got nothing to do with luck/ it just means that a million people are stupid as fu__”.

      1. I’m only here 2 add on 2 the “facts” you already have. Jay-z and Nas are both great, both top 5, I don’t really know who one the battle, but I think Ether was WAY more creative of a battle rap… like he used Jay’s “I WILL NOT LOSE” phrase in the hook, that’s kinda dope. And F.Y.I Jadakiss puts Jay at the top of his top 5 list just so you know look it up, but anyway that immortal Technique line is dope, I feel like that about lil wayne.

    101. excellent fucking post man

These crabs act like the lost tapes doesn’t exisit. That album is better than anything jigga put his name on

    102. To many people on here are saying Nas’s career is dead and Nas wanted to be the King of NY. Nas goes away for years@ at a time, he has NEVER liked the limelight. I think many of you don’t appreciate that fact. And yes, Illmatic was his one classic, but folks act like I Am wasn’t a good album and It was Written. Let’s be clear, name one person whose made an album better than the classic. Has Jay made an album better than Reasonable Doubt. Snoop better than Doggystyle, Kanye better than College Dropout, Outkast better than Aquemini.

Let’s be clear, Jay took shots at Nas because he knew most people considered Nas the better MC, and stop with Jay was a new jack stuff. He had been out and was at the top of the Roc-A-Fella movement. Please with all of that. At the end of the day, both are incredible artist, and should be respected for that. One enjoys and feeds off the limelight, the other is more concerned with trying to remain true to his niche while also taking care of he and his family.

      1. Stop the righteous bullshit please, Nas wanted the limelight which is why he dropped a mainstream album like “It Was Written” , “I Am” and “Nastradamus”. He failed at reaching high mainstream status. That’s why he’s looking to do tracks with lil wayne ,drake and other popular mainstream artists on his upcoming LP. Every artist is in it for money,Jay is just honest about it. If some weren’t than they would of put out a free studio albums for their fans.

    103. I remember KRS-One took Jay side, on MTV for the same reason. Factual is always the winner, in the actual. But, really… it was Prodigy who was never the same, lol.

    104. JAY-Z WIN THAT PLUS BRING NAS BACK TO LIFE, remember this nigga Nas was running around talking about shortie what your price to to back it up you can hold my ice. laymmme

      1. Nastradamus wasn’t that good compared his albums before that, but it still went Platinum so don’t act like his career was over. He dropped I Am 6 months before that and it went double Plat. Two Platinum records in one year isn’t the sign of a career that’s falling off.

    105. Neither one of them is better than other really. Jay-Z is about maintaining and gaining success and creating black wealth. Nas is about social commentary and ghetto community activism. It really depends who you relate to more. I’m a business-minded person driven for success so I gravitate to Jay more. Nas is very poetically abstract and one of hip hop’s greatest cautionary tale storytellers. Lyrically none is superior than the other if you listen to both of their catalogs and unreleased tracks. Jay can be just as thought-provoking as Nas and Nas can be just as commercial as Jay. I like Jay for his wordplay and double/triple entendres that you won’t get for days. I like Nas for his extensive vocab and storytelling abilities that touch your soul. The truth is will never get to the bottom of this because Nas fans are going to believe Jay got slaughtered, just because they hate Jay with a passion for an apparent reason. Then it’s the Jay fans who are pissed with Nas because the result of the battle who think Jay was cheated. Though as a fan of both I will admit that Nas slightly took that one. People just because Nas won the battle doesn’t mean he is a superior MC than Jay. If we go there then I’ll say that Rhymefest is a superior MC than Eminem since he beat Em in a battle, when Eminem was at his hungriest on the mic. In no way in the world is Rhymefest a better MC than Eminem. Don’t jump on me Nas stans I’m just trying to make a point here. Nas and Jay are two of the greatest emcees ever, but none is better than the other. Stop hating on Kendrick Lamar just because his opinion doesn’t resonate with yours.A lot of underground lyricists look up to Jay as much as they do Nas contrary to underground heads belief. Kendrick and Jadakiss are doing no worng choosing sides, it’s called “opinions” people, get over it

    106. Jigga won. Ether was hard though. But look at the catalogs and compare them shits. Nas ain’t put out a hot single since ‘Nas Is Like.’
      fuck everybody

    107. I’ve only seen two facts up here. Nas won the battle, Jay-Z won the war. Why is it that you guys just can’t agree on that? Whoever is your personal favorite is your OPINION. Nothing more. It’s not the end of the world if someone thinks Nas is better. And this is coming from a HUGE Jay-Z fan. Both sides can make valid cases to support their opinions. Personally, I think he lost the battle, but I also think he’s the better emcee due to the fact that his career outshines basically any rapper (including Nas), you can bring up. No one has ever lasted as long, produced as consistently, made as big of an impact, or been considered the best for so long. When it’s all said and done and stats are counted when he finally retires (he needs to), no one really has the all-around accomplishments to compete with him. But with that said, I’m not going to ignore how great Nas was and is as an emcee. I can definately see why people would choose Nas over Jay, I mean hell the guy beat him in a battle, what more do you need right? I guess my point is that the debate was about who won the battle. I don’t see how who the better emcee is relevant to that, the best lose from time to time it happens. Facts are facts. Yes Jay-Z ended up way more successful than Nas business wise and music wise, you can’t really dispute that. He’s done more, sold more. But I’m not going to act like Ether didn’t have me going crazy. Either could be considered the best for very valid reasons, neither side is more right than the other. They are both two of the greatest ever, and if they never had this beef, most of us would more easily agree on that. Nas fans were rockin with Jay-Z before the beef, just like Jay fans were with Nas. It’s ok if someone prefers another artist other than your favorite. Some of you fellow Jay fans are actin like someone’s gonna tie you to a chair and make you listen to Illmatic all day lol

      1. cosign 110% Nas fans and Jay fans use to be one together, but soon as they beef came about people starting taking sides and dissing the other side. If the beef didn’t happen, we would all agree that Jay and Nas are two of the greatest emcees that hip hop has seen.

    108. This shit is not up for debate. Wasn’t then and isn’t now. All you niggas tryna bring up the fact that Jay-Z ended up with the career need to stop. That nigga lost THIS BATTLE. That’s what we talkin about. Not whether or not he did better after that. Don’t get me wrong, I remember the beef, Jay was killing him for a minute, but he got cocky. He had him beat with Super Ugly, but came back again with Takeover that was weak as hell, and Nas came back and kilt his ass. That’s usually how most rap battles end, people usually look at the last thing the two rappers said. Jay should’ve came harder on Takeover, especially since he took an unecessary shot at Nas when he already had him beat. He should’ve finished him off but it just goes to show you if you gone do a job do it right. Both them niggas ill and I even like Jay better but even the best lose from time to time. Niggas felt like Pac beat Big when they had beef. Jordan didn’t win a ring every year. Even Mike Tyson lost a fight. The shit happens get over it

    109. you niggas on dope or dog food jay will never be able to fuck with nas he wanted nas on his album so who is the dick rider.

    110. The battle had 2 rounds (Nas – H to The Omo VS. Jay-Z – Takeover) which Jay won hands down.. 2nd Round (Nas – Ether VS. Jay-Z – Super ugly) which Nas won… So it was a tie , #FACT

      1. Thank you! these Nas stans or Jay haters don’t realize that there were two rounds. Jay one the first one with Takeover and Nas won the second won with Ether. So it’s fair to say it was a tie. Stillmatic freestyle where Nas took a shot at Memphis Bleek and Jay was weak but Ether was powerful enough to take the second win. People do your research before you say anything

      2. Your facts are wrong man. Jay debuted ‘Takeover’ at Summer Jam 2001. He just did the first verse about Mobb Deep and ended the song with “ask Nas, he don’t want it Hov. NO!’. Right after that Nas did the Stillmatic freestyle.

    111. A fucking jigga dick rider should know Nas is on another level to Jay when it comes to the verses. Nas is way too creative, comparing them is damn right stupidity.

    112. “Ive been real all my life they confuse it with deceit, but I will not lose so they tried to help him cheat, but I will not lose for EVEN IN DEFEAT, theres a valuable lesson learned so it evens it up FOR ME”

wow even jay z accepted defeat

    113. “Ive been real all my life they confuse it with deceit, but I will not lose so they tried to help him cheat, but I will not lose for EVEN IN DEFEAT, theres a valuable lesson learned so it evens it up FOR ME”- lyrics to blueprint 2
wow even jay accepted defeat why the argument

    114. ay z is such a fucking sell out. blueprint 3 was the nail in the coffin, this nigga would drop a collabo album with beiber if it kept him hot. i never seen a nigga hold on like this. writing articles for bullshit rolling stone, a publication that has tried to destroy hip hop on several occasions. not only is jay begging for acceptance, his music is shit now. dumb bitch nigga. self praise is no praise at all. a king doesnt crown himself, a king is crowned by the people, biggie is the king

    115. 1. these two men have grown up and made up so good for them.

      2. I cant believe anyone would seriously think Jay Z won

      3. this poster sums up jay z and how he has managed to even get his name mentioned in the same sentence as Nas………

      from Christopher London –

NAS is talented, however, you would be better off dismissing JAY Z and his NARCISSITIC ICONIC POSEUR who’s music has literally no depth beyond positioning himself along side Icons hoping that the dumbed down masses who listen to his distraction will see him as some lyrical messiah…. Jay Z’s music is simply NARCISSITIC POSE. Do you recall a time when “great art” questioned the foundation or direction of our culture, the course of humanity, the nature of people and their values, the call for a higher purpose? “Can you IMAGINE? It’s easy if you try.” The lyrics of artists like Jay Z are barren and completely devoid of meaning and utterly soul less in their relative insignificance.

    116. Special Ed – Ten reasons why Nas won this battle:

      #my2cent$

    117. Nas won hands down. wheres the debate? Why the fuck ppl writin ESSAYS on here tho like its worthy or like the beef effected Them directly..

    118. Some of you are so far off it’s sick to even read how much dickride to both jay and nas….Ether as whole hit harder but bar for bar Jay ate that nigga up nasty…now to address some other things Jay was about the money from the beginning telling the hustler’s story now if jay is trying to copy nas so much why did nas start calling himself “escobar”???? think about it before you respond

    119. Are U serious, there no debate, Nas shitting on hov be. Nas is that nigga. G.O.A.T
      U already know!!!

Jadakiss is that nigga right now.

    120. I agree with Kendrick. Kendrick knows rap. You can hear it in his lyricism. Hov won because he had real facts. I mean dude had Takeover and Supa Ugly. Not only that, but he fucked Nas’ baby momma (LMFAO) and afterwords when Jay was president at Def Jam, Nas worked for dude basically when he switched labels. Haaa… Plus, look at who has a more impressive catalog. I mean Nas only has one classic. Illmatic. Technically two if you wanna add It Was Written but not really. Hov has Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint, two undisputed classics. Five if you ask me if you add The Black Album, American Gangster and Watch the Throne. And look at who is more relevant. Nobody has had the relevance and longevity that he has had. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Ether was magnificent, but Hov had the upper hand because what he was saying was factual and realer. But it’s all about opinions. Nobody can really say who won. But in my opinion, Hov did. Sorry.

    121. First off, anyone who thinks ether is better than takeover is wrong and I’ll tell you why. Ether is full of homophobic references, but disregarding these blatantly political offensive lyrics, they do not make sense. Think about it. Is Jay-Z gay? Not only is he not, he is hitting Beyonce. These references to Jay-Z’s sexuality make up a major theme of the song, but they are pointless. At one point in the song he actually says “cockafella”. I honestly wonder if they thought that was clever when he wrote it, because to me it sounds like something a 1st grader would say and laugh about. I do like the line: “I got this, locked since ‘9-1 I am the truest, name a rapper that I ain’t influenced.” Additionally, the song is ripe with inaccurate statements. For instance, KRS did not make an album called Blueprint, it was called Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop. The damn word isn’t even in the main title, its in the secondary title. Also, Rockefeller did not die of AIDs so he really sounds like an idiot when he says that. Nelson Rockefeller (namesake of Rockefeller Plaza) was Vice President of the United States and a Billionaire, so that line was stupid. Honestly, how cares what Jay-Z looks like, look at his wife.

Nas has one good line: “Eminem murdered you on your own shit”. That is true, but that sound was amazing so it doesn’t matter. Eminem did better, but it wasn’t like Jay-Z did bad. Its like “Forever” with the exception of Kanye West, every rapper was amazing on that song, but Eminem was far better.

      Takeover
First, Jay-Z didn’t even spend the whole song talking about Nas, whereas Nas spent the whole song on Jay-Z. This is important because we have to consider lines not directed at Nas like: “little fucks I got money stacks bigger than you.”

“I’ve been in it five – smarten up Nas
Four albums in ten years nigga? I could divide
That’s one every let’s say two, two of them shits was due
One was – NAHHH, the other was “Illmatic”
That’s a one hot album every ten year average”

What is good about this is that Jay-Z, even says Illmatic was a good album. He is being fair and giving credit where credit is due. But he is right, Illmatic is a great album, but it is Nas’ only great album.

There is more reasons but honestly listen to the song. Ether is dated, whereas Takeover isn’t.

      1. wrong rockefeller. Jayz’s company was named after Rockefella who was a brooklyn hustlerin the 80s who died of AIDs

    122. This is a no win argument. It can never be objective either. There are Nas rap fans and Jay rap fans, and it’s unfortunate that they are mostly mutually exclusive. I am a fan of both, but I choose Nas over Jay. Always have, even before the battle. Now when it comes to the actual battle, I was shocked that Nas came back and eviscerated that hurt that Jay put on him with Takeover. I didn’t believe it could be done. Infact, the fact we are still talking about it today is more to Nas’s credit than it is to Jay, because had Jay delivered the killer blow, there would have been no Ether, and had Ether been subpar, there would have been no controversy about who won. It just turns out that folks actually voted and Nas got a split decision, and wounded Jay’s pride so bad Jay came back with Superugly, a posse cut nobody really cares to remember, except for its extreme content and overcompensation. Nas didn’t need to respond to it, because he only made one song that became a hip-hop VERB on its own. If I could, I could ETHER any more debate about who won, because there is only one record of who won and it lingers to this day. The rest is just rap fans who are still not over the shock.

    123. The procution on “Ether” is garbage and the lyrics are so hilariously childish a five year old could’ve easily written them. But since that’s what Rap music fans seem to like, as opposed to mature and factual lyrics, it will always be considered the best song out of the two.

    124. If you think jay won because of facts do your research.
1.You said you’ve been in this 10, I’ve been in it 5 – laughable jay z’s earliest song with jaz o came out a year or 2 before Live at the barbecue which jay z is referring to. Now that being said also deems the next few bars to be stupid because his math is retarded nas first album came out in 1994 not 91.
      2. he said he paid serchlite publishing for the nas sample – there was no serchlite publishing. Your possibilities are endless when you make shit up
      3. Also about the one hot album every ten year average – false It was written is a classic and I am is great (

      1. hmmm

        1. Jay is talking about how long he was releasing albums so his 5 is correct with the blueprint being his 6th album in 5 years.
        2. of course there wasn’t a actual searchlite publishing, he just creatively saying i paid mc search of that sample. that back story is still sketchy anyway.
        3. thats a matter of who you like. of course as a nas fan you would say or should say all Nas albums are classics.

      2. no ill-matic > it was written, are absolute certified classics not forgetting ill-matic is flawless 20 years later

    125. jay never dropped more facts, like nas has some shit like jay is ugly, but let’s be honest he ain’t gettin girl because of his looks.
