J. Cole Explains His Use Of The Word “Faggot” On “Villuminati”

With the topic of homophobia in Hip Hop an increasing point of conversation in the Hip Hop community, North Carolina rapper J. Cole unsurprisingly drew a tremendous amount of criticism after premiering his Born Sinner record “Villuminati.”

On the song, Cole raps, “My verbal AK slay faggots/ And I don’t mean no disrespect whenever I say ‘faggot,’ OK, faggot/ Don’t be so sensitive/ If you want to get fucked in the ass.”

The rapper finally broke down those particular lyrics while speaking with the Huffington Post and stated that he was attempting to playfully “attack” the issue of homophobia in Hip Hop on “Villuminati.”

“There will soon come a day when people in general, and rap artists specifically, are going to have to answer for their past usage of the word ‘faggot,’ much like the Grandfathers who are ashamed that they used the word ‘nigger’ as kids,” Cole explained, according to HighBrowHipHop.com. “At a time when public acceptance of gay rights is soaring (rightfully), hip-hop culture and general are still battling with homophobia (not excluding myself). Rather than run from it I chose to attack it playfully. Those lyrics are meant to make everyone uncomfortable for the sake of this very conversation.”

Other rappers who have addressed the issue of homophobia in Hip Hop include Kendrick Lamar, T.I., and Macklemore.

“Villuminati” serves as the introductory record on J. Cole’s Born Sinner album, which will be released on June 18.

    1. Man, he gonna end up catching heat from the pink mafia lol. Checkout thegrandreport, they have some good entertainment new on there as well

    2. This dude and Kendrick are always trying to make it appear that they’re smarter then they actually are. There is no explanation or complex reasoning behind using that word. He just said it because that’s the way he talks…He has a very limited vocabulary compared to most of the other rappers and cures a lot because he has nothing to say, half of the time. There’s no deeper explanation then that.

      1. Nailed it.
If you really listening he ain’t really saying anything. If he really wanted to spark a debate he’d have dedicated more bars about it.

      2. you ever been to post-secondary school homie? did you even grad high school? caue cole tore through that shit..he’s far from a dummy, i won’t say listen closer or anything cause its pretty basic but its smart shit , you don’t appreciate it then don’t listen to it lol cause i’m lovin the album regardless how deep this line is haha

      3. i think he is just trying to defend himself after everyone was making a big deal out of him saying faggot. he should just tell them that he can say whatever the fuck he wants to say. no one give eminem any shit for saying faggot anymore because thats what he did

    3. Don’t see the problem with the word faggot
And I don’t have problems with faggots either
I just don’t want to see that sh*t, or be around it
      That’s my choice
Also, people calling a fag a fag doesn’t bother me either
Green is green, high ain’t low, so a fag is a fag. Simple as that

      1. To all my gay folks out there don’t get so butt hurt by j.cole saying FAGGOT i mean come on now y’all want to jump on j.Cole’s back for using the word faggot and Y’ALL at like it’s a end of the world crisis but when eminem uses it and trust me he does go listen to his recovery album he uses faggot throughout the whole record but y’all did say or do SHIT so if y’all gay folks going to come at j.cole like that for saying what he said then u need to come at every new rapper out for saying the same thing it just is stupid of yall to come at just one person when just about everyone is doing the same shit i have nothing against gay people hey u practice what u preach but when a rapper says something like this and it offends u and turn it into major media issue DON’T BE HALF ASSED ABOUT IT BY TAKING SHOTS AT JUST ONE RAPPER GET AT ALL THESE RAPPERS SHIT IVE HEARD TYLER THE CREATOR SAY FAGGOT, I’VE HEARD THE GAME SAY IT, I’VE HEARD 50 CENT SAY IT, SHIT Y’ALL I’VE HEARD CHRIS BROWN SAY IT AND HE AINT REALLY A RAPPER MAYBE Y’ALL SHOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION TO CHRIS BROWN CAUSE HE’S ACTUALLY BEAT UP A GAY PERSON A GAY MUSIC ARTIST TO BE EXACT DOES FRANK OCEAN RING A BELL TO Y’ALL YEAH SO YALL GAY FOLKS GOT ALOT OF MUSIC ARTIST TO GET AT NOT JUST ONE Y’ALL NEED TO BE PROTESTING AT EVERY RAPPER THAT USES FAGGOT IF NOT DON’T EVEN WASTE YOUR BREATHS SAVE IT FOR MEN THAT STICK THEIR DICKS IN YOUR MOUTHS that what ima do if u call me a faggot for being gay ima just tell u to TALK TO THE HAND CAUSE THE FACE AINT TRYIN TO HEAR IT THEN IMA FIND ANOTHER GAY DUDE TELL HIM TO SUCK MY DICK WHILE U CONTINUE HATING WIT YOUR NAME CALLIN

    4. total cop-out. doesn’t sound like “bringing light to it,” just regular use of it without any deep meaning.

    5. People get so sensitive nowadays even wit movies. People watch a movie and instantly get offended if they hear fuck or shit.

    7. there’s way too much political correctness in society today, grow a layer of
skin and man the fuck up

    8. Danielle Harling, I dunno if you read these comments but you are being very misleading and taking those lines out of context!

The lines go: “If you want to get fucked in the ass/Thats between you and whoever elses dick it is, pause/Maybe that line was too far/Just a little joke to show how homophobic you are”

The lines that follow up are directed at the hip-hop community to address the fact that this IS an incredibly homophobic community! Since Macklemore wrote “Same Love” all of a sudden everyone’s a gay rights activist? Using shock value, the same things Eminem or Pac or Biggie or Lil Wayne or whoever were saying, and turning it on its head by making you question it.

People are taking this out of context and making it seem like a big deal, this is a blip compared to some rappers and at least its conscious. At least he’s making people think and question their values. I really don’t understand the outrage.

      1. I was about to say,

My verbal AK slay faggots/ And I dont mean no disrespect whenever I say faggot, OK, faggot/ Dont be so sensitive/ If you want to get fucked in the ass.

They cut it off mid-sentence, totally missing the entire point of what he was saying and putting Cole in a bad light. I swear, I only check this site to laugh at the horrendous writing.

    9. Hip-Hop never has nor will it ever be for the faint of heart, if you wanna hang better have some thick skin, if you can’t come to terms with that then get the fuck out of the culture. Don’t like what you hear then don’t bump it, simple as that

      1. Villuminati is one of my 3 favorite tracks on the album…

But I think that’s a testament to a great album: When everyone has different favorites and it is hard to choose.

For Me: Rich Niggaz, Chaining Day, Let Nas Down, Aint that some Shit, Runaway, Mo Money, Power Trip, and Trouble are my favorites

    10. this world sucks! everybody should explain everything… huh? fuck that shit. just let everybody do or say anything they want to…

on the other hand. I like a girl so much, but I’m not patient enough to let her feelings express… what to do guys?

    11. Am I the only person that is insulted that HipHopDX didn’t censor the word F***? I mean come on!!!

And J. Cole’s explanation is weak, He knew he wanted to piss off gay people, he did that on purpose. And it cost him atleast 1 fan, I will never buy his music again

    22. If you want to get fucked in the ass
That’s between you and whoever else’s dick it is

that last line makes a big difference in my opinion. so maybe they should use more complete quotes and not selections.

      1. Ya this article is very misleading and takes those lines out of context!

      2. and after “just a little joke to show how homophobic you are” he says “and who could blame you”

honestly, the whole part is weird and sounds like he is afraid to either make a point about homophobia or say he is homophobic.

    23. people grew up calling each other faggots. when I say faggot I dont mean a homosexual exactly, I mean someone who is acting like a faggot. it is what it is

    24. Yeah. Macklemore tackled the issue in a classy and extremely respectable way. J. Cole did it in an extremely offensive way. If anything, I’d say this “explanation” sounds like an excuse to try to cover his homophobic ass.

    25. “you want me to tone it down? suck my fucking dick you faggot, happy now?” – Em

      the good old days

    26. judging from these comments he doesn’t seem to have sparked any positive debate among the “hip hop community”.

at best it was a misguided attempt at sparking an important discussion. at worst it was just a pointless offensive slur, which in reality it makes him a part of the problem he is supposedly trying to combat.

    27. He did this because he can. The Gay Black Community is mainly cowardly, and they look for ways to excuse Straight Black Homophobes. He used the word “joke” and “playfully.” Oh, he is playing. He wants that Straight Homophobic support for his album.
