J. Cole once promptly removed himself from a Muni Long studio session after hearing her talk negatively – and she completely understands his position.

In a clip currently going viral from a December 2023 interview the “Made For Me” singer did on the 85 South Show, Muni reflected on the session and why she did not take it personal.

“I remember one time I had a moment in the studio where J. Cole was there. And I was just having a bad day that day and I started just talking trash,” she recalled. “I was talking to my other friend Theron from R. City, who’s also an artist and a songwriter. And Cole came in the room and within two minutes he sat down, he heard what we was talking about and he got up and left. And I just remember being like, ‘Damn, why did he do that?’ But then I realized we wasn’t on the same frequency.

“He not on that complaining and [stuff we were saying] like, ‘Why these n-ggas always trying to play us? Who they think they is?’ That kind of conversation does not circulate in higher level rooms. He didn’t judge me, he didn’t say nothing bad. He sat there, he listened for like a minute and then he got up and left. What happens is when you’re high vibrational like that, most likely those people are going to bring you down. You’re not going to be able to bring them up.”

An in-demand songwriter long before becoming a successful singer, Muni Long has many a story from the studio.

In a TikTok video she shared in 2022, Muni revealed she was supposed to do a song with Drake before he blew up, but she ended up ghosting the Toronto native to appease her “jealous” boyfriend (who, needless to say, is now an ex-boyfriend).

“That one time in 2008 I missed out on a Drake feature because my bf at the time found out he was pulling up to the studio and flew into a jealous rage so I chickened out and quit responding to his texts,” she captioned a clip of her applying lip balm during a car journey.

She also shed more light on her relationship with Drake in an interview with Apple Music 1’s Ebro Darden later that year, revealing they connected during the making of his 2009 breakout mixtape So Far Gone after he heard her cover of “Best I Ever Had.”

“I recorded a cover of ‘Best I Ever Had’ where I played it on guitar, sang it instead of rapped it,” she said. “That went viral so much that Drake reached out to me, and he was like, ‘Yo, I love what you did with the song.’ He gave me his number, we’re talking. Mind you, I’m just out of high school.

“And I was watching him on Degrassi when I was in middle school and high school. So I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is Aubrey Graham. This is amazing! Wheelchair Jimmy.’ I remember talking to him back then, and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m an actor. I’m trying to get into music. I did this mixtape for Valentine’s Day. Didn’t really take it serious. People love it. I’m singing. Lil Wayne wants to sign me.’”
