While Drake‘s signing to Cash Money/Universal was the most talked-about Hip Hop artist signing in several years, the Toronto-born rapper is still getting specific facts out there. In Drake‘s Fader cover-story, the So Far Gone emcee confirms that while he is signed to and managed by the same staff as mentor Lil Wayne [click to read], the rapper’s parent label is a little different than Birdman, Lil Wayne and others.
“I went through Universal Republic because I don’t fuck with Motown. At All.” Drake says in the article, which will hit stands August 18. Reportedly, the bad blood with parent label stemmed from contractual threats from label president, and longtime industry veteran Sylvia Rhone.
With this clarification, Drake will now be dealing directly with same Universal Republic machine responsible for Chamillionaire‘s [click to read] success. In the meantime, in the interview, the rapper says he welcomes the possibllity of Kanye West executive producing his debut. Previously, West has executive produced debut projects from John Legend, Consequence and 88 Keys [click to read].
