While Jay-Z can take credit for creating an anti-auto-tune anthem with “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-tune)” [click to listen], the Brooklyn emcee says his “little brother” was the one who set the goal.
According to Billboard.com, Hova explained how Kanye West brought about the inspiration. “He actually sparked the idea,” he said. “When he heard the beat he said, ‘Man, this is just so hard! This has to be against everything — no auto-tune, none of that type of stuff!’ He didn’t know what I was going to do or where I was going to take it, but it was actually his fault.”
No I.D., who co-produced “D.O.A.,” concurred in a recent video [click to watch] stating Kanye was the man who pushed the concept. Ironically, No I.D. also said the plan nearly backfired on Mr. West as Jay-Z’s lyrics proceeded to “bash” on items Kanye has been synonymous with, such as the aforementioned auto-tune effect and bright shirts. “We had a discussion about it, and [‘Ye] said, ‘you going too far man, I don’t know.’ And Jay said, ‘Look, I said I’m not talking about you.'”
