In the tradition of James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Little Richard and others, The Jacksons will be this year’s recipient of the BMI Icon Award at this year’s Urban Music Awards. The awards will be held September 4th at The Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.
The award will be presented by BMI‘s President and CEO Del Bryant and VP Catharine Brewton. The presentation will be followed by an all-star medley of Jackson hits performed by various inspired artists and legacy acts.
Originally formed in Gary, Indiana in 1966, The Jackson 5 penned a slew of classic albums before adding brother Randy to the group a decade later, transforming into The Jacksons. The group is most remembered for being the launching point for the mega-star career of Michael Jackson.
In Hip Hop, the group has been cited as many artist’s inspiration, and sampled frequently. Jackson-based compositions include Puff Daddy & The Family‘s “All About The Benjamins,” Ghostface‘s “All That I’ve Got Is You,” and Naughty By Nature‘s “O.P.P.”
