JAY-Z has been feeling generous lately giving out numerous sample clearances from his catalog.
After allegedly clearing seven records for The Game’s upcoming Drillmatic album, Hov lent his stamp of approval to Jermaine Dupri for DVSN’s upcoming “toxic” single “If I Get Caught” which is set to arrive on Friday (July 22).
The So So Def CEO took to Instagram on Wednesday (July 20) to share a text message exchange between him and Hov, which finds Jay ultimately giving his blessing to use a sample of one of his records under one condition.

“I didn’t think one could make a song more toxic than Song Cry. I stand corrected,” the rap legend wrote, after which Dupri asked if that meant he was clearing the sample. “I just want a disclaimer that says that I said this song is wrong! Haaaaa And you’re good!”

“If I Get Caught” is all systems go for a Friday arrival and DVSN thanked Dupri for getting the sample cleared with Jay but fought back on his claims that the record is “toxic.”

“Thx @jermainedupri for clearing the Jay-z sample … and Idk if the song’s TOXIC it’s more just… honest,” the OVO Sound duo wrote to Twitter.
Dupri took note of DVSN’s abilities when they sampled Usher’s 1997 “Nice & Slow,” which he produced, for the Snoh Aalegra-assisted “Between Us” in 2020.
Dupri eventually got in touch with DVSN and posted up with the duo’s singer Daniel Daley in the studio for a March 2021 session.

In other JAY-Z news, Joe Budden has spoken about the time Hov charged him $250,000 for a verse on the remix to his 2003 hit “Pump It Up” and how the high price tag had nothing to do with any personal issues between the pair, despite rumors pointing to the contrary.

Budden shrugged it off and merely claimed he didn’t know what he was doing at the time. “Listen, I’m super young in that moment,” he said. “I wasn’t in the studio when [Jay and Budden’s A&R Skane] had the conversation. I knew that they had some type of relationship. It was a Just Blaze beat, and I was green behind the ears. I just thought that it would get done.”

He continued: “I didn’t know anything about the business and how things like that are supposed to go. That was par the course…It was big to me because it was unattainable… but the blessing was that he gave a number.”
