The D.O.C. suffered a catastrophic injury to his throat in 1989, rendering him unable to speak for what felt like forever. But before the life-altering incident, he’d just released his debut solo album No One Can Do It Better with the track “Mind Blowin’ (Remix),” a song that apparently left Eminem tongue-tied.

On Wednesday (June 8), Eminem uploaded a video snippet from the forthcoming documentary The DOC, which does a deep dive into the journey of the West Coast Hip Hop legend. In the clip, Slim Shady is baffled by a particular line in the “Mind Blowin’ (Remix)” and needs to call on The D.O.C. to finish the verse.

“He was doing things that nobody else had done yet,” Eminem begins. “Just lyrically like mind-blowing. On ‘Mind Blowin,’ he was like, ‘The DOC is dope/I would’ve been down with rock but I’d be broke/By the punk, I’m opening up my trunk/To reveal, death, living it up, my life is like a story/Yelling it, ‘cause nobody else is telling it/Checking it, always getting paid ’cause the rap is sort of like a twist/Between what you needed and what I mean…’

That’s when Eminem stops rapping and tells the producer to go get The D.O.C. who soon enters the frame to complete the verse.

“Wait, I need him,” Shady continues. “I gotta ask him what he said on this part. On this one part, I never understood it like I couldn’t make out exactly what it was. ‘The DOC is dope/I would’ve been down with rock but I’d be broke/By the punk, I’m opening up my trunk/To reveal, death, living it up, my life is like a story/Yelling it, ‘cause nobody else is telling it/Checking it, always getting paid ’cause the rap is sort of like a twist/Between what you needed and what I mean by twist, now you gotta listen.'”

He asks, “What the fuck was that right there?” to which The D.O.C. raps, “Never a segment in negative ‘cause I’m employing what you’ve been missing.”

Eminem, clearly impressed, says, “How the fuck did you say that shit? God damn.” The D.O.C. humbly replies, “I don’t know. It just came out.”
