Cambodian producer, singer, songwriter SONGHA premiered a visual film for his upcoming sophomore album, The Grimes Vol. 1. The multi-hyphenate has gathered an ambitious cast of nineteen fellow Cambodian artists, ranging from promising talents to established superstars managed both by his label Baramey Production and the label he co-founded, La Lima Cartel. Artists like long-time collaborator and rap sensation VannDa, YCN Tomie, A-GVME, and Rakhie have signed on to deliver the envisioned project.

Accompanying the project is its official visual film where Songha debuts The Grimes as a persona. The film narrates a message of encouragement, embodying the success promised by the American dream against cuts reminiscent of bombastic Hollywood car chase scenes and featurettes of each artist on the album. “’Rise Up’ is a very simple phrase, but for me: it is my dream,” narrates Songha in the visual.

Inspired by the rich lore of Hollywood blockbuster movies, the record veers away from the artist’s pop-rock roots for a more experimental route, leaning into cinematic soundscapes, drill, experimental hip hop, and more. “The Grimes Vol. 1 is a cinema-inspired exploration of sound and emotion, representing a shift in the musical landscape in Cambodia,” writes Baramey Production in a press release, adding: “The Grimes himself is an alter ego signified by his golden welding mask, representing the craftsmanship behind music with every little detail mattering to the final composition.”

This release follows the lead single off the album, “Anxiety” featuring YCN Rakhie last October 1. The Grimes Vol. 1 will be released on October 22, alongside the single and video for “Monsoon” featuring VannDa.
