Alyph finally gets his due with the release of his solo EP, III/III, out now via Def Jam Singapore. The Singaporean producer wears multiple hats, singing and rapping in his most introspective and personal project yet.
He spoke about the experience in creating his “three-track odyssey” as something “very close to who I am and what I do.” During the virtual press conference for the EP release, he shared that the most challenging part of being an artist is “to convince myself that I’m doing the right thing [with my music].” He also explained the importance of maintaining a fresh perspective in fueling his artistic drive. “My motivation for making music is that it cannot sound like everything I’m hearing right now. Who am I to feel like this if I’m churning out the same kind of material?” he said in a statement.
The EP includes his first solo foray, “Adakah Kau Mendengar?” (Are You Listening?), followed by the release-day drop of the R&B-grime single, “Skali Lagi” (One More Time) and the accompanying music video directed by fidz.bare. The track delves into the “familiar struggle of searching your way out of the darkness.” These personal themes are central to Alyph’s music. Ultimately, the EP closes with “Show Me Colours,” where Alyph describes as a moment of “finding a small piece of triumph amidst the turmoil.”
Alyph rose to prominence as one-half of Singaporean hip hop duo, SleeQ, eventually working as a producer for Malaysian and Singaporean artists under his producer alias, Magic Potions. The veteran hitmaker has worked with some of the biggest names in the region, including Joe Joe Flizzow, K-Clique, Kaka Azraff, SonaOne, Jay Park, and more.
