Those in the Houston area will have a chance to pay tribute to two of their own this weekend. Sunday’s Big Phat Block Party will serve as both a rally against gang violence and a tribute to Patrick “Fat Pat” Hawkins and John “Big Hawk” Hawkins of the legendary Screwed Up Click. Both Hawkins Brothers played a crucial part in Houston’s Hip-Hop scene before their untimely deaths.
The rally/block party begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday September 23 at Club 3PG. More information as well as donation and sponsorship opportunities are available HERE.
One-time Stetsasonic and Gravediggaz member Prince Paul is adding Hip-Hop to his “Baby Loves” series. Paul is currently working on Baby Loves Hip-Hop, an instructional, teaching album aimed for toddlers. The acclaimed producer and father said he didn’t have to go far to find inspiration, since he has a 4-year-old daughter.
“If she says, ‘Play it again!’ I know I’m on the right track,” Paul said. “Kids are honest. They just go, ‘No it’s boring.’ My goal is to make a Hip-Hop record for kids that’s not corny.”
Baby Loves Hip-Hop features appearances from Chali 2na, Mecca Ladybug of Digable Planets, Wordsworth and spoken-word poet Ursula Rucker. For more information visit www.babylovesmusic.com.
