DJ Premier and Guru’s time together as the inimitable Hip Hop duo Gang Starr was cut painfully short when the gifted MC passed away in April 2010. But, as Hip Hop fans discovered last year with One Of The Best Yet,Guru left behind a vault of gems — not just in the form of music but also in the words he spoke during countless interviews.
On Thursday (July 30), the tenured producer shared a snippet from one of Guru’s interviews via Twitter and reflected on the wisdom he carried.
“This Is Not GURU’s Handwriting But It’s Definitely His Words From One Of Our Interviews,” Preemo wrote. “INCREDIBLY WISE WORDS THAT REMAIN OUR VISION OF LIFE…R.I.P. GURU. GANG STARR 4 LIFE…ONE OF THE BEST YET.”
Guru was asked “What’s the one thing you have learned from the industry?” to which he replied, “I’ve learned to stick to my guns. My gut feelings. Where my heart is at. Keep my feet to the ground. And when the whole crowd is going one way, we walk the other way. The path of the righteous is narrow — the righteous pay a sacrifice to get what they deserve.”

Preemo has presumably been doing a lot of reflecting in recent weeks. As he revealed in another tweet, the Houston native will appear at Lollapalooza’s virtual event this year alongside LL COOL J in a panel called “Make Change with LL COOL J: The Art of MCing.”
As he explained in the caption, “I joined @LLCOOLJ in the studio on @salesforce’s #MakeChange series to honor GURU from @gangstarr, and the impact he had on Hip-Hop as we know it.”
The event is scheduled to take place on Friday (July 31) on Lollapalooza’s YouTube channel. Check out the tweet below.
