The cast for the Lifetime biopic based on Salt-N-Pepa has been announced.

According to Essence Magazine, actresses GG Towson and Laila Odom have been cast as the platinum-selling Hip Hop duo. Towson has been cast as the stoic leader  Cheryl “Salt” James while Odom is set as the dynamic Sandra “Pepa” Denton.

Actress Monique Paul has been cast as the group’s DJ Deidra ” Spinderella” Roper. The series is set to follow the music duo’s rise from college students to a game-changing musical act for females in Hip Hop.

Actor/director Mario Van Peebles has been set to helm the series while James and Denton are executive producers on the series. Flavor Unit’s Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere are set to produce the series along with James ‘Jimmy’ Maynes and the duo’s original producer Hurby Azor.

The limited series has been set to premiere on Lifetime in 2020 but no release date has been announced.

Salt-N-Pepa has not released any original material since 1997’s Brand New, although they continue to tour. More recently, the group has made headlines due to DJ Spinderella’s termination and subsequent lawsuit.
