Justin Vernon recently sat down for an interview with Zane Lowe and admitted he regrets airing out his issues with Emimem’s song “Fall” on a public forum. The Bon Iver frontman said he was in the wrong for speaking out against their collaboration via Twitter last year.
“I made that huge mess out of the Eminem song,” he told Lowe. “I was just in a car wash and I just tweeted. Like, what was I doing? I should’ve just probably chilled out and actually just said, ‘Please don’t put this song out.’”
He added, “It was very rude and I felt really bad about it.”
Vernon performed the chorus on “Fall,” which featured a controversial lyric about Tyler, The Creator. The song appeared on Eminem’s surprise album Kamikaze, which dropped in August 2018.

“Tyler create nothing, I see why you called yourself a faggot, bitch/It’s not just ’cause you lack attention/It’s ’cause you worship D12’s balls, you’re sacrilegious/If you’re gonna critique me, you better at least be as good or better,” Eminem rapped on the track.
Slim Shady’s use of a homophobic slur sparked a series of tweets from Vernon, who expressed his problems with the song. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter declared he was “wrong” for contributing to the cut and would “kill this track.”
“Was not in the studio for the Eminem track… came from a session with BJ Burton and Mike Will,” he wrote. “Not a fan of the message, it’s tired. Asked them to change the track, wouldn’t do it.”

He continued, “Eminem is one of the best rappers of all time , there is no doubt. I have and will respect that. Tho, this is not the time to criticize Youth, it’s the time to listen. To act. It is certainly not the time for slurs. Wish they would have listened when we asked them to change it.”
Vernon’s regrets about handling his problem with Eminem have surfaced one week after he opened up about the current state of his relationship with Kanye West. The two’s political differences, such as Yeezy’s support for Donald Trump, have affected the bond between the longtime collaborators.
“I can’t really kick it with him anymore on a personal level, just the energy,” Vernon told Pitchfork. “But I’ve got mad love for him, and we’re still friends.”
Vernon is currently doing press rounds for Bon Iver’s new album i,i, which dropped earlier this month.
