HipHopDX Premiere

Music scribe Darryl Nelson — known by his stage moniker River Nelson — has temporarily swapped the pen for a mic to deliver “Today,” one of 10 tracks featured on the upcoming album, Power, Resilience & Joy.

The uptempo and optimistic track centers around someone desperately hoping their dream will come to fruition after years of hard work.

“I think a lot of people who’ve pursued a goal have wondered when all of the hard work and sacrifice will pay off,” Nelson tells HipHopDX. “That’s basically what ‘Today’ is about. It’s about someone who wakes up one day and feels incredibly hopeful that something major will happen in their pursuit.

“But that hopefulness also shares the same space with anxiousness, maybe even desperation because it’s been a difficult journey with a lot of false promises. I thought ‘Today’ was a good lead single because it gives a nice representation of this album, which have songs that examine life’s hardships and how to overcome them — while remaining hopeful and powerful.”

Producers included on Power, Resilience & Joy include K-Murdock of the Hip Hop group Panacea (formerly signed to Rawkus Records), British beatmaker Giacomo Trivelli of Sam Sure & Giacomo, Orlando Lorde, Mudslide Matt and AltoBeats.
